Cox, Ellis stand out for Cougars

FOOTBALL

 

*Logan Laughlin was 16-of-24 for 225 yards and 3 touchdowns while Kai Matthews made a game-saving interception as Asheboro opened the Calvin Brown era with a 24-22 win over Albemarle. Elijah Woodle caught 3 passes — all for touchdowns — for 145 yards. T.J. Mark intercepted a pass and Jaylon Moore recovered a fumble.

 

*Thomas Dobias returned an interception for a touchdown and also had a rushing touchdown in Randleman’s 20-7 win over Thomasville. John Kirkpatrick threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Tyshaun Goldston. Chase Farlow, Micah Thurston and Goldston each had an interception.

 

*Jentezen Cox ran for 199 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries as Southwestern Randolph beat Western Guilford 29-18. Nathan Ellis tallied three touchdowns for the Cougars — two rushing and one receiving. 

 

*Jonathan Kelly ran 16 times for 91 yards and 3 touchdowns as Wheatmore thumped West Davidson 33-7. Quarterback Riley Strickland was 16-of-24 for 188 yards. Trey Swaney caught 9 passes for 127 yards and had 58 yards rushing on 5 carries. Clay Hill recovered a fumble while Noah Browning and Max Smith each had a sack.

 

*Carter Revelle threw for 356 yards and a touchdown but Eastern Randolph lost 35-15 to Eastern Alamance. Revelle was intercepted twice. Nicah Taylor caught 11 passes for 167 yards while Donnell Watson caught a touchdown pass.

 

*David Hayes was victorious in his first game as Providence Grove head coach when the Patriots beat East Davidson 24-7.

 

*Trinity fell 43-30 to Starmount in an offensive shootout. Starmount amassed 508 yards of total offense.
