Extra-inning games, upsets, big performances: Last week had a little of everything in high school sports. Randle-man needed an extra-inning win to stay unbeaten in PAC play, and SW Randolph suffered its first softball loss in league play. Here’s a look back at those and other highlights from the week.
BASEBALL
*Ben Luck was 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs as Asheboro throttled Southwestern Randolph 11-1 in five innings. Cohen Caviness had a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Shane Immel and Adam Curry each had a run-scoring single. Amare Godwin threw a three-hitter with two strikeouts.
Jake Lunsford had two hits for Southwestern Randolph and Zack Scruggs doubled in a run.
*Sam Gore had three hits in Asheboro’s 4-3 loss to Ledford. Caviness also had two hits while Aiden Robinson had a two-run double.
Connor Adams struck out 11 in 6 1/3 innings.
*Braxton Walker blasted a grand slam to give Randleman the early lead and then the Tigers held on for a 6-5 win over Trinity in eight innings. Jake Riddle had an RBI single. Walker got the win with one inning of relief. Seth Way allowed three earned runs and struck out nine in seven innings.
Walker Parrish had a hit and two RBIs for Trinity. Ethan Willard had a hit and RBI. Andon Simmons gave up five earned runs and five hits while striking out three in 7 2/3 innings.
*Caleb Coggins and Clay Hill each had two hits in Wheatmore’s 5-0 loss to Uwharrie Charter. Parker Kines struck out three in five innings.
*Samuel Asbill had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs as Eastern Randolph edged Providence Grove 4-3. Lucas Smith added a two-run double. Asbill struck out 7 and allowed 3 earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Smith pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Andrew Thomas had a double, single and two RBIs for Providence Grove. Grant Underwood and Will Dabbs both had a hit and RBI. Thomas went the distance on the mound, striking out nine.
*Lunsford drove in five runs with a three-run triple and two-run single as Southwestern Randolph beat Jordan-Matthews 10-4. Thomas Hogan had two hits and an RBI. Jonah Campbell also had two hits. Grant Kirk and Brady Armfield each had a two-run double. Lunsford struck out 9 in 6 2/3 innings.
*Riley Gaines had two hits and an RBI in Providence Grove’s 6-4 loss to East Davidson. Jayten Beasley and Underwood each had two hits.
*Will Stalker collected two hits and three RBIs in Eastern Randolph’s 7-4 win over Page. Bryson Marley had a double, single and two RBIs. Cade McCallum and Asbill each had two hits. Carlos Cordero had a run-scoring single. Chance Holliday went 6 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and no earned runs with 6 strikeouts. McCallum finished for the save.
*Kines had three hits, including two doubles, and an RBI in Wheatmore’s 5-2 win over Thomasville. Jonathan Heraldo, Trey Mitchell and Sean Jennison all had RBI singles. Carson Work threw a one-hitter over 5 1/3 innings with 6 strikeouts. Hill got the save.
*Shane Immel had a run-scoring single in Asheboro’s 10-1 loss to Ledford.
*Carter Brown had a double, single and four RBIs in Uwharrie Charter’s 11-5 win over Wheatmore. Trey Kennedy smashed a two-run homer and Troy Carver had an RBI single. Brett Smith allowed one hit, an earned run and struck out five in four innings.
Ayden Byrd had two hits and three RBIs for Wheatmore. Hill had two hits while Payton Mooney and Coggins each had a run-scoring single.
*Jayten Beasley had two hits and an RBI while also pitching 4 1/3 innings as Providence Grove edged Eastern Randolph 2-1. Beasley allowed three hits and an unearned run with three strikeouts. Trevor Kirkman and Jacob Flinchum pitched in relief.
Alex Kivett had three hits for Eastern Randolph. McCallum gave up two unearned runs, four hits and struck out eight in six innings.
*Brady Armfield was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in Southwestern Randolph’s 14-9 win over South Stanly. Zack Scruggs had three hits and two RBIs. Kam Carter also had three hits. Jonah Campbell smashed a three-run homer and Austin Harvell belted a solo home run. Grant Kirk had two hits and two RBIs. Armfield allowed one earned run in 4 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.
SOFTBALL
*Ruby Caudle tossed a five-inning no-hitter with four strikeouts while also blasting a home run, double and driving in three runs as Providence Grove blanked Wheatmore 10-0. Callie Lambert had three hits, including a triple, and an RBI. Lara Wiseman added two hits while Gracie Smith and Kolbi Jo Lineberry had RBI singles.
*Kenzie Hill had three hits, including two triples, and six RBIs in Uwharrie Charter’s 15-5 romp over Randleman. Aubrie Kauffman was 4-for-4 with an RBI. Ryley Thompson had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Katelyn West had two hits and an RBI as did Emory Johnson. Ansley Wright had a double and a single. Mollie Bulla pitched a five-inning complete game with nine strikeouts.
Saniyah Deloatch, Natalie Roach, Kaylee Phillips, Kinzie Ivey and Kylie St. John all had a run-scoring single for Randleman.
*Addie Flinchum tossed a four-hitter with seven strikeouts as Eastern Randolph downed Southwestern Randolph 4-1. Ziera Watson had two hits and Flinchum got a double.
Madelyn Smith doubled in Southwestern Randolph’s run and Hayleigh Thompson had two hits. Macie Crutchfield went the distance in the circle, allowing eight hits and striking out seven.
*Caudle threw a three-inning perfect game with five strikeouts as Providence Grove rolled past Trinity 15-0. Cailyn York had a triple, double and three RBIs. Gracie Smith had a triple and three RBIs. Kolbi Jo Lineberry had a hit and two RBIs. Devon Kelly had a triple and RBI.
*Carmen Turgeon went 3-for-3 in Wheatmore’s 15-5 loss to Southwest Guilford. Savannah Heiney had a single and two RBIs. Adalyn Boles, Maddie Nichols and Kyle Hemric all had a hit and RBI. Hemric’s hit was a double.
*Phillips had three hits and two RBIs in Randleman’s 8-2 win over Western Alamance. Addyson Dees had three hits and an RBI. Natalie Roach had two hits. Ivey threw a four-hitter with 12 strikeouts.
*West had two hits, including a double, and an RBI in Uwharrie Charter’s 4-2 loss to Southern Alamance. Bulla allowed one earned run and struck out seven in four innings.
*Jayla Hurley had a double, single and RBI as Uwharrie Charter edged Eastern Randolph 5-4. Kauffman had a double and RBI. Bulla went the distance, throwing a four-hitter with one earned run and 11 strikeouts.
*Alyssa Harris went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs in Southwestern Randolph’s 7-0 win over Chatham Charter. Kami Dunn and Crutchfield each had a hit and two RBIs. Nautica Parrish and Smith each had two hits. Crutchfield pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts.
SOCCER
*Jazmin Palma scored four goals in Uwharrie Charter’s 9-0 win over Southwestern Randolph. Reese Craven and Kendal Jarrell each had two goals. Lily Charlesworth scored one goal and had a pair of assists. Palma had one assist and Alexis Marion made eight saves.
*Natalie Bowman scored both goals in Wheatmore’s 2-1 win over Providence Grove. Ellie Garrison had both assists and Lucy Lockwood made 10 saves.
Brooke Ingram scored Providence Grove’s goal.
*Patience Keller and Taryn Waugh each scored two goals in Providence Grove's 7-0 win over Southwestern Randolph. Anaeli Puente Garza, Sarah Majors and Ingram each had one goal. Leah Banks, Keller and Ingram each had an assist.
*Iztel Macias, Penny Smith and GiGi Flores scored the goals in Asheboro’s 3-1 win over Ledford. Carlisle Dozier made six saves.
*Garrison scored both goals in Wheatmore’s 2-1 win over Trinity. Bowman had an assist and Lockwood made one save.
*Dozier made 16 saves in Asheboro’s 6-0 loss to North Davidson.
GOLF
*Wheatmore’s Ryan Marshall was the medalist with a 40 and Uwharrie Charter took the team title in a PAC match at Tot Hill Farm. Uwharrie Charter’s Will Thompson (41) and Providence Grove’s Cooper Wright (43) rounded out the top three. Nathan Pope (Wheatmore), Ashton Turner (Southwestern Randolph), Tyler Gee (Eastern Randolph), Cameron Powell (Randleman), Caleb Brandon (Uwharrie Charter), Brodie Lambeth (Uwharrie Charter) and Brady Collins (Providence Grove) all shot 44.
*Wheatmore’s Marshall took medalist honors with a 38 and the Warriors won the team title in a PAC match at Colonial Country Club. Uwharrie Charter’s Will Thompson shot a 42 and Trinity’s Grayson Earls had a 43.
TRACK AND FIELD
*The Randolph County meet was held at the Asheboro Middle School track. Of note, Asheboro’s Valentino Mark broke 11 seconds in the 100-meter dash in both the preliminaries (10.95) and finals (10.98) and the Blue Comets’ Lance Everhart won four individual events.
Winning for the Providence Grove girls were the 4x800 relay (Laurel Bernhardt, Aaliyah Burpee, Jensen Auman, Abbey Lewis), Auman (1600 meters, 3200 meters), and the 4x400 relay (Kenzi Mundy, Bernhardt, Reese Davis, Lewis).
Winning for the Trinity boys were the 4x800 relay (Riley Foster, Tommy Smithers, Mitchell Marin-Pulido, Giovanni Jaimes), and Jaimes (400 meters, 800 meters).
Winning for the Trinity girls was Kayla Franklin (400 meters).
Winning for the Asheboro girls were Nyla Price (100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles), Jalaya Showers (100 meters, 200 meters), the 4x200 relay (Sayre Smith, Sion Murrain, Ey’Mya Cheek, Showers), and the 4x100 relay (Price, Murrain, Cheek, Showers), Lia George (pole vault).
Winning for the Asheboro boys were Lance Everhart (110-meter hurdles, high jump, pole vault, long jump), Valentino Mark (100 meters, 200 meters, triple jump), the 4x200 relay (Jaylon Moore, Elijah Woodle, Jalial Timmons, Luke Brumley), the 4x100 relay (Moore, Woodle, Timmons, Mark), and the 4x400 relay (Kai Matthews, Zacheus Jones, Cayne Duranceau, Luke Brumley),
Winning for the Wheatmore boys was Zach Hazelwood (1600 meters, 3200 meters).
Winning for the Randleman boys were Jay Richards (300-meter hurdles) and Ty Moton (discus, shot put).
Winning for the Randleman girls were Aubri Hill (800 meters) and Gracie Beane (high jump, long jump, triple jump).
Winning for the Eastern Randolph girls was Miranna Corea (discus, shot put).
*Asheboro’s boys won an MPC tri-meet with Ledford and Oak Grove. Asheboro finished second in the girls meet.
Winning for the Asheboro boys were Everhart (110-meter hurdles, long jump, high jump, pole vault), Mark (100 meters, triple jump), the 4x400 relay, the 4x100 relay, and Zacheus Jones (200 meters).
Winning for the Asheboro girls were Price (100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles), Showers (100 meters, 200 meters), the 4x100 relay, Rebecca Wilson (high jump), and Sarah Reeder (pole vault).
TENNIS
*Silas Jessup and Avery Plummer took singles wins in Wheatmore’s 5-4 loss to East Davidson. The doubles teams of Kalvin Smith/Michael McNamara and Jessup/Plummer also won.
