Eastern Randolph won a key matchup with Southwestern Randolph while Randleman and Providence Grove kept rolling. Here’s what happened as all games were played on Thursday due to Hurricane Ian.
EASTERN RANDOLPH 20, SOUTHWESTERN RANDOLPH 12
The Wildcats relied on their ground game as Devonte Brooks got 160 yards and 3 touchdowns while Ervodd Cassady totaled 128 yards.
Eastern Randolph’s defense limited Southwestern Randolph quarterback Easton Clapp to 108 yards passing on 11-of-20 attempts. The Wildcats intercepted Clapp twice. Clapp ran for a touchdown and Adam Cole returned a punt for a touchdown.
The Wildcats are now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Southwestern Randolph slipped to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the PAC-7.
RANDLEMAN 49, WHEATMORE 0
Christian Long threw for 170 yards and 4 touchdowns — two each to Tyshaun Goldston and Chesney Welch — as the Tigers continued their resurgence with a blowout win. Randleman (4-2, 1-0 PAC-7) equalled last season’s victory total. Amarion Moton ran for 105 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Chase Farlow snagged his fourth interception of the year and Johnathan Blankenship recovered a fumble.
Wheatmore fell to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
PROVIDENCE GROVE 31, TRINITY 0
Zane Cheek ran for 102 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 14 carries as the Patriots had things humming in their PAC-7 opener. Zander Cheek ran for 71 yards and a touchdown and Brady Collins threw a touchdown pass to Joe Coltrane, who finished with 4 catches for 56 yards.
Tucker Batten kicked a 37-yard field goal.
Nathan Hutcherson, Gage Baynes and Collins each recovered a fumble to lead the defense. Hutcherson had 9 tackles, including 4 for loss. Collins also made nine tackles.
The Patriots are 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the PAC-7. Trinity fell to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
OAK GROVE 52, ASHEBORO 7
The undefeated Grizzlies were too much for the Blue Comets as Mid-Piedmont Conference play began.
