Eastern Randolph No. 4 seed in 1-A, and Randleman, No. 4 seed in 2-A, both got their state playoff title hunts off on the right foot Friday night. Here’s a look at those games and other sports highlights for the week.  

 

FOOTBALL 

*Tyshaun Goldston scored on a 38-yard run and caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from John Kirkpatrick as No. 4 Randleman beat No. 29 East Gaston 30-13 in the first round of the state playoffs. Kirkpatrick also threw a touchdown pass to Chase Farlow and Christian McLeod kicked a 33-yard field goal.

 

Tristan Chriscoe returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown to lead the Randleman defense.

 

*Lucas Smith ran for two touchdowns and caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Cade McCallum as No. 4 Eastern Randolph trounced No. 29 Swain County 49-0 in the first round of the 1-A playoffs.

 

Smith scored on runs of 1 and 45 yards. Jayden Spikes had a 10-yard touchdown run for the Wildcats.

 

Zeb Meadows paced the defense by returning a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown.

 

*Southwestern Randolph, seeded No. 27, fell 19-7 to No. 6 East Surry in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. The Cougars ended their season with a 6-5 record.

 

*Asheboro fell 55-0 to undefeated Dudley in the first round of the 3-A state playoffs. The Blue Comets (4-7) were making their first appearance in the state playoffs since 2016.

 

SOCCER

 

*Cam Letterlough and Diego Bustamante each scored a pair of goals as Asheboro beat Northwest Cabarrus 5-0 in the second round of the 3-A state playoffs. Cristian Raygadas got the other goal. Letterlough had two assists while Ozmar Martinez, Andre Valladares and Bustamante each had one. 

 

*Yael Ortiz and Fernando Hernandez both scored two goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 5-1 win over conference rival Trinity in the second round of the 2-A state playoffs. Aaron Avina had the other goal. Hernandez also had two assists and Jonathan Perez made six saves.

 

*Uwharrie Charter fell 6-1 to Union Academy in the second round of the 1-A state playoffs. The Eagles ended their season with an 8-11 record.

 

*Letterlough scored two goals, pushing his total to 73 for the season in Asheboro’s 4-0 win over Pisgah in the third round of the 3-A state playoffs. Bustamante and Martinez scored the other goals. Letterlough, Martinez and Bustamante each had one assist.

 

*Jonathan Lopez, Hernandez and Avina scored the goals as Southwestern Randolph downed Bandys 3-0 in the third round of the 2-A state playoffs.

 

*Carlos Castaneda, Letterlough and Bustamante scored the goals as Asheboro blanked East Lincoln 3-0 in the fourth round of the 3-A state playoffs. Alexander Diaz, Castaneda and Bustamante had the assists. Letterlough has 74 goals — the fourth best single season total in NCHSAA history.

 

*Hernandez led the way with four goals as Southwestern Randolph outlasted Newton-Conover 5-4 in the fourth round of the 2-A state playoffs. Kevin Garcia scored the game-winning goal. Ortiz, Lopez, Avina and Hernandez had an assist each. Jonathan Perez made 10 saves. Hernandez has 48 goals for the season.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

 

*Zy Holmes scored 25 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in Trinity’s 73-47 rout of South Davidson. Nazir Staton added 16 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists. Jackson Lee had 15 points and 7 rebounds.

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL

 

*Nevaeh Staples produced a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds along with 3 blocks in Uwharrie Charter’s 49-24 rout of Franklin Academy. Kayla Brown also scored 13 points. Naimah Al-Arif had 8 points and 6 rebounds. Brennan Thomas had 7 rebounds and 4 steals.

 

*Madison Hill scored 19 points and Ava Nance had 15 as Trinity beat South Davidson 49-29.

 

*Staples scored 14 points while Emory Thomas had 11 and Al-Arif had 8 as Uwharrie Charter whipped Chatham Charter 58-13.

 

BOYS SWIMMING

 

*Wheatmore’s Colten Osborne won the 100-yard butterfly in a meet with Atkins and Parkland at the Kernersville YMCA.

 

*Wheatmore won a three-team meet with Providence Grove and Randleman at the High Point Swim Club.

 

Winners for Wheatmore were the 200-meter medley relay (Jaden Kilcullen, Landon Weeks, Osborne, William York), Alexis Vega-Torres (200-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke), Osborne (200-meter individual medley, 400-meter freestyle), York (100-meter freestyle), the 200-meter freestyle relay (Jack Tobey, Jayden Grant, York, Vega-Torres), and the 400-meter relay (Vega-Torres, Kilcullen, Weeks, Osborne).

 

Winning for Randleman was Cannon Eggleston (50-meter freestyle, 100-meter breaststroke).

 

GIRLS SWIMMING

 

*Wheatmore’s Sydney Hall swept the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle in a meet with East Forsyth, Atkins and Parkland at the Kernersville YMCA.

 

Also winning for the Warriors were Paislee Hollifield (200-yard freestyle), Jillian Wolfe (100-yard backstroke), and the 4x100 freestyle relay (Wolfe, Sophie Willamson, Hall).

 

*Wheatmore won a three-team meet with Randleman and Providence Grove.

 

Winners for Wheatmore were the 200-meter medley relay (Wolfe, Hollifield, Hall, Williamson), Hall (200-meter freestyle, 400-meter freestyle), Williamson (50-meter freestyle), Wolfe (100-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke), the 200-meter freestyle relay (Wolfe, Williamson, Hollifield, Hall), and Hollifield (100-meter breaststroke).

 

Winning for Randleman was Kendall Fortson (100-meter butterfly).

 

Winning for Providence Grove was the 400-meter freestyle relay (Chloe Toomes, Salem Wright, Lyndsay Browder, Liv Coleman).

 

WRESTLING

 

*Asheboro’s boys and girls participated in the Atkins Invitational.
 

Placing for the boys were Estabon Santos (first, 106), Berrick Bigelou (second, 132) and Adam Curry (fourth, 157).

 

Placing for the girls were Ivet Medeiros (third, 165) and Grace Redding (third, 235).
