A look at some highlights from various prep sports in the second week of play in the young season.
SOCCER
*Fernando Hernandez scored three goals in Southwestern Randolph's 4-1 win over Central Davidson. Pedro Ortiz punched in the other goal. Yael Ortiz and Braydon Tyl each had an assist.
*Hayden Hemming and Avery Plummer scored the goals in Wheatmore’s 3-2 loss to Glenn. Kooper Grant had an assist.
*Jaimes Gomez, Diego Bustamante and Alan Alcantara each scored a goal in Asheboro’s 3-0 win over Ragsdale. Carlos Gonzalez and Cristian Raygadas both had an assist. It was a bounce back win after a 1-0 loss to North Moore on Aug. 21 at home.
*Raygadas and Bustamante each had a goal in Asheboro’s 2-0 win over Christ the King on Aug. 24, the Blue Comets’ third game in four days.
*Hernandez collected three goals for the second straight game as Southwestern Randolph whipped North Stanly 9-0. David Dominguez scored two goals. Gadiel Negrete, Kevin Garcia, Gustavo Garcia and Tyl all had one goal.
VOLLEYBALL
*Haley Hinshaw had 14 kills and 16 digs in Randleman’s 25-10, 27-25, 15-25, 25-22 loss to 3-A Oak Grove. Camryn Vickery had 31 assists and Karli Kennington had 26 digs. Camden Scott had 12 kills and 8 digs. Haleigh Baity had 5 kills and 11 digs.
*Sion Murrain had 15 kills and 4 digs as Asheboro swept Providence Grove 25-11, 26-24, 26-24. Ellen Long had 10 kills, 2 blocks and an ace. Lia George had 5 kills and 5 digs. Piper Davidson had 14 digs. Anna-Grace LeRoy had 17 assists and 4 digs.
*Vickery produced 28 assists, 8 digs, 3 aces and 2 blocks in Randleman’s 25-12, 25-20, 25-20 win over Ashenboro. Scott had 17 kills and 17 digs. Hinshaw had 7 kills and 7 digs. Baity had four kills.
Murrain led Asheboro with 10 kills and also had 3 digs. Long had 8 kills, 3 blocks and an ace. Davidson had 15 digs while Anna-Grace LeRoy had 13 assists and 8 digs. George had 5 kills and 8 digs.
*Kaitlyn McCoy had 9 kills and 7 aces as Trinity swept Thomasville 25-2, 25-15, 25-5. Sarabeth Johnson also had 9 kills for the Bulldogs. Natalie Franko and Avery Moffitt both had seven kills. Katelyn Hill had 6 aces and Avalynn Johnson had 24 assists.
*Sarabeth Johnson had 11 kills and 16 digs in Trinity’s 25-15, 21-25, 25-17, 25-18 loss to Mount Airy. Avalynn Johnson had 24 assists and 7 digs. McCoy supplied 14 kills, 9 digs and 4 blocks. Eva Porter had 9 digs, Franko had 7 kills and Moffitt had 6 blocks.
*Scott had 18 kills and 14 digs as Randleman outlasted Northern Guilford 25-21, 17-25, 25-22, 24-26, 15-11. Hinshaw had 16 kills and 12 digs. Vickery had 44 assists and 17 digs while Kennington had 18 digs. Mollie Hall had 10 kills and 2 blocks.
*Sarabeth Johnson had 11 kills, 11 digs and 4 aces in Trinity’s 25-16, 25-23, 25-23 sweep of Lexington. Franko had 11 kills and 5 blocks. McCoy had 12 kills. Hill had 19 digs and 4 aces. Avalynn Johnson had 27 assists.
*George had 10 kills and 10 digs in Asheboro’s 25-15, 25-23, 26-24 win over Wheatmore. Murrain had 7 kills, 6 digs and 2 aces. Davidson had 16 digs, 2 kills and 2 aces. Long had 8 kills, 3 blocks and 2 digs. LeRoy had 18 assists and 7 digs.
Taylor Richardson led Wheatmore with 8 kills and 4 aces.
*Riley Mazzarone had 30 assists, Mailey Way had 19 digs and Addie Morgan had 9 kills in Providence Grove’s 25-22, 25-10, 25-20 win over East Davidson.
CROSS COUNTRY
*Wheatmore’s Zach Hazelwood won the boys individual title at the Bob Schilly Invitational, finishing in a personal-best 16:21.7. His time was 31 seconds faster then the second-place finisher.
TENNIS
*Maya Barber, Noelle Swaim, Abby Greeson and Elizabeth Shue won in singles as Providence Grove beat Southwestern Randolph 5-3. The team of Audrey Frazier/Barber won in doubles.
Allie Popp and Larson Kelly took singles wins for Southwestern Randolph. The doubles team of Sammie Parks/Bethany Latham also won.
*Audrey Frazier, Barber, Swaim, Greeson, Caroline Tidwell and Ella Money swept the singles as Providence Grove downed East Davidson 8-1. The doubles teams of Swaim/Greeson and Reese Davis/Tidwell also won.
*Frazier, Barber, Swaim, Greeson and Tidwell won singles matches in Providence Grove’s 7-1 win over Uwharrie Charter. The teams of Frazier/Barber and Tidwell/Shue won in doubles.
The team of Hannah Williams/Lanie Hodges won a doubles contest for Uwharrie Charter.
