ASHEBORO - The high school baseball season is still a ways away, but the Asheboro High School baseball program has already been thrown a curveball.
Coach Bradley Rudisill, who was hired to replace Brett Hoogkamp, is taking a temporary leave of absence due to family matters and will not coach the Blue Comets this spring. Instead, Glen Hunt, the team’s assistant coach last year who spent four years as the head coach at Providence Grove and six years as the head coach at Bishop McGuinness will assume interim head coaching duties.
Asheboro High School Athletic Director Wes Berrier made the announcement last week.
“It wasn’t in my plans to take over, but I am happy to step in,” Hunt said. “We’re all thinking about Coach Rudisill.”
Hunt said being in the program for a year is a plus.
“I know what they are capable of, I know what positions they play and I know what we need to work on,” Hunt said. “We’re going to work to perform at our best level.”
Steve Luck is going to return to the program as an assistant. Jeremy Taylor will also be on the staff and Berrier said one more coach will be hired.
“I am going to coach this team like I have in the past,” said Hunt, who returns a lot of young talent. “Coach Hoogkamp did a very good job, especially on the offensive end and I learned a lot from him. It’s a great tradition here and obviously we want to get back to where they were. We have great kids with great attitudes.”
The Blue Comets finished 9-17 a year ago.
