Early volleyball playoff success in the area at week’s start ended by the third round on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Asheboro’s Cam Letterlough reached the 60-goal mark as AHS clinched another MPC title.
Here’s a look back at more of the week’s highlights.
Volleyball
- Caroline Cagle had 7 kills and 5 aces as No. 13 Southwestern Randolph beat No. 20 Newton-Conover 25-11, 25-23, 25-9 in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. Jade Matias had 6 kills while Kinlin Hulin had 5 kills and 2 blocks. Gracie Hodgin and Cheyenne Dixon both had 6 kills and 2 aces.
- Camden Scott had 19 kills, 20 digs and 2 aces as No. 3 Randleman held off No. 29 Rutherfordton-Spindale Central 25-16, 26-28, 25-19, 25-10 in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. Haley Hinshaw had 18 kills and 19 digs. Ava Jones had 6 kills and 4 aces. Mollie Hall had 7 kills and 3 blocks. Camryn Vickery had 45 assists and 13 digs while Kadie Green had 21 digs.
- Emma Kate Forester had 14 kill, 4 blocks and 4 aces as No. 14 Asheboro swept No. 19 Pisgah 25-15, 25-21, 25-12 in the first round of the 3-A state playoffs. Ady Scherer added 10 kills and 6 blocks. Lia George had 7 kills and 17 digs. Emma Little had 21 digs while Eva Vuncannon produced 16 assists, 7 digs and an ace. Anna Grace LeRoy had 16 assists and 4 digs.
- Karrington Batten had 21 kills, 5 blocks and 4 aces as No. 18 Trinity outlasted No. 15 West Stokes 14-25, 25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 15-8. Kaitlyn MvCoy posted a double-double of 17 kills and 12 digs along with 2 blocks. Avery Moffiitt had 11 kills and 2 blocks. Avalynn Johnson had 41 assists and Charlee Phillips got 19 digs. Desiree Rond had 2 kills and 5 blocks.
- Vickery hit a milestone of 2,000 career assists as Randleman swept Forbush 25-13, 25-19, 25-18 in the second round of the 2-A state playoffs. The senior setter had 44 as-sists, 10 digs and 2 blocks in the match. Scott had 18 kills, 10 digs and 2 blocks. Hinshaw had 11 kills and 12 digs. Ava Jones had 9 kills, 9 digs and 3 blocks. Green had 12 digs while Natalie Roach had 6 digs and 3 aces.
- Hodgin had 11 kills, but Southwestern Randolph fell 25-20, 25-17, 17-25, 25-17 to No. 4 West Stanly in the second round of the 2-A state playoffs. Hulin had 9 kills and 3 blocks. Cagle also had nine kills. Bailey Blackmon and Matias both had seven kills. The Cougars ended the season with a 16-12 record.
- Batten had 9 kills and 4 blocks in Trinity’s 25-11, 25-13, 25-15 loss to No. 2 Brevard in the second round of the 2-A state playoffs. McCoy had 8 kills and Moffitt had 7. Phillips had 12 digs and Johnson had 16 assists.
Soccer
- Cam Letterlough scored all three goals in Asheboro’s 3-0 win over North Davidson. Diego Bustamante had two assists and Daniel Gutierrez had one.
- Chris Lopez, Mario Martinez, Owen Leonard and Mitchell Carranza each scored one goal in Randleman’s 4-0 win over Uwharrie Charter. Francisco Vences, Erick Delgado and Carranza all had one assist.
- Yael Rebollar Ortiz scored three goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 9-0 shutout of Eastern Randolph. Fernando Hernandez got two goals and two assists. Aaron Avina, Kevin Garcia, Logan Freeman and Rodrigo Santana Bernal all had one goal. Jonathan Lopez Degollado and Avina both had two assists. Braydon Tyl and Ortiz each had one goal.
-Letterlough scored three goals, giving him 60 for the season, in Asheboro’s 4-2 victory over Ledford. Ozmar Martinez tallied the other goal. Juan Macias and Bustaman-te each had an assist. The Blue Comets clinched the Mid-Piedmont Conference championship with the win.
- Avina scored two goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 9-0 victory over Wheatmore. Gio Hernandez, Fernando Hernandez, Griffin Hall, Logan Freeman, Noah Freeman, Ortiz and Garcia all scored one goal. Fernando Hernandez and Garcia both had two assists. Tyl, Degollado and Ortiz all had one assist.
- Jaydon DeNamur scored four goals as Uwharrie Charter edged Eastern Randolph 5-4. Cadence Butler got the other goal. Deegan Williams, Isaac Jaramillo, Butler and DeNamur all got one assist. Victor Nino made 20 saves.
- Lopez scored three goals and Vences two in Randleman’s 6-0 win over Providence Grove. Leonard got the other goal. Lopez and Leonard both had two assists. Jorge Hernandez and Vences each had one assist. Dilan Chavero made five saves.
- Leonard had 3 goals and 2 assists in Randleman’s 7-2 victory over Central Davidson. Vences also scored a pair of goals while Ivan Collazo and Lopez each had one. Deaton Davis and Chavero each made three saves.
Tennis
- Deanna Cobb, Karla Rios, Jacey Wilson and Kayla Neam won in singles as No. 12 Trinity downed No. 21 Bandys 5-2 in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. The doubles team of Cobb/Neam also won.
- Providence Grove’s Audrey Frazier won the PAC individual tournament, played in the regionals and advanced to the state tournament.
- After receiving a first-round bye, No. 5 Providence Grove beat No. 12 Trinity 5-2 in the second round of the 2-A dual team state playoffs. The Patriots advanced to play No. 4 Burns in the third round.
- After upsetting No. 11 Owen 5-4 in the first round of the 2-A dual team state playoffs, No. 22 Wheatmore fell 6-0 to No. 6 West Stanly in the second round.
- No. 10 Uwharrie Charter fell 9-0 to No. 7 East Wilkes in the first round of the 1-A dual team state playoffs.
Girls golf
- Providence Grove’s Megan Oakley shot 88 to finish 14th overall and the Patriots were third as a team in the 1-A/2-A Central Regional at Colonial Country Club.
The Patriots advanced to the state tournament, which is being held at Sapona Golf Club in Lexington.
