The last two Randolph County basketball teams fell in the third round of the playoffs last week. Meanwhile, several Asheboro High School athletes were honored as the Mid-Piedmont Conference announced its winter season awards. Among them, Maci Columbia was named Swimmer of the Year.
Here’s a look at those and other local highlights from the week:
Boys Basketball
Timothy Brower scored 31 points in Eastern Randolph’s 75-66 loss to No. 2 South Stokes in the third round of the 1-A state playoffs. Julian Brooks added 10 points for ER, which finished 18-9.
- Asheboro’s Elijah Woodle was named co-defensive player of the year in the Mid-Piedmont Conference. Joining him on the all-MPC team were Osiris Rodriguez and Jalial Timmons.
Girls Basketball
Navaeh Staples, Lainey Thomas and Kayla Brown all scored 10 points in Uwharrie Charter’s 79-35 loss to No. 3 Albemarle in the third round of the 1-A state playoffs. UCA finished 24-8.
Baseball
Carlos Cordero and Chance Holdaway each had a hit and two RBIs in Eastern Randolph’s 10-5 win over North Moore. Landon Albright had two hits and an RBI. Lucas Smith also had two hits. Bryson Marley pitched 4 1/3 innings and got the win.
- John Kirkpatrick had three hits and three RBIs as Randleman belted Asheboro 13-3 in five innings. Kyle Dillow had two hits and three RBIs. Lincoln Lawson and Jackson Hill both had two hits. Jake Riddle went the distance on the mound with nine strikeouts.
- Jake Hunter had a triple, single and two RBIs in Uwharrie Charter’s 11-0 blanking of Chatham Central. Kamrin Hussey and Landon Zephir each had a hit and two RBIs. Grat Dalton had an RBI double while Rusty Wheless singled in a run. Jaxon Mabe had a hit and an RBI. Logun Wilkins pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts.
- Sean Jennison and Clay Hill combined on a five-inning no-hitter as Wheatmore beat Thomasville 10-0. Jennison struck out 7 in 3 1/3 innings. Hill hurled 1 1/3 innings and had two hits with two RBIs. Jackson Martin had a hit and two RBIs. Caleb Coggins had a hit and an RBI.
- Jennison had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs in Wheatmore’s 12-6 loss to Central Davidson. Nathan Oxendine had two hits and an RBI. Trey Mitchell and Jackson Martin each had a double.
- Avery Wright, Cordero and Holdaway had hits in Eastern Randolph’s 5-2 loss to Caldwell Academy.
- Jose Ramirez had two hits and an RBI as Uwharrie Charter rallied for a 6-5 win over Asheboro. Wheless also had two hits for the Wildcats, who scored five runs in the last two innings. Brody Engle had a single, double and an RBI. Brett Smith got the win in relief, striking out 5 in 3 1/3 innings.
Sam Gore had two hits and two RBIs for Asheboro. Jacob Tevebaugh also had two hits. Ben Luck had a double and an RBI.
- Adam Curry had a three-run double as Asheboro beat West Iredell 5-1 in the second game of a doubleheader. Cohen Caviness had two hits. Curry allowed one run in four innings. Gore pitched a scoreless inning.
Grayson Norman had an RBI double in Asheboro’s 5-1 loss to West Iredell in the first of the two five-inning games.
- Gavin Allen had a hit and two RBIs in Asheboro’s 4-3 loss to North Stanly. Price Kidd allowed two runs in four innings with five strikeouts, taking the loss. Mason Kotlowski gave up two runs in three innings.
- Jacob Flinchum had a home run, single and two RBIs in Providence Grove’s 8-3 win over Cedar Ridge. Andrew Thomas had a single, double and two RBIs. Grant Underwood had a run-scoring single. Canaan Sheppard allowed one earned run in four innings. Chase Collins gave up a run in three innings.
-Braxton Walker smashed a two-run homer and pitched a three-hitter as Randleman beat North Davidson 5-3. Walker struck out 12 and walked 3. John Kirkpatrick was 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.
Softball
Kinzie Ivey had three hits, including a double, and an RBI as Randleman beat Southern Alamance 11-2. Teanna Bostick had a single, double and two RBIs. Addyson Dees had two hits and an RBI. Kadie Green had a hit and three RBIs. Olivia Ashby had a hit and an RBI. Ivey got the win in relief.
- Shellee Culler had six hits, including two home runs, as Asheboro swept Thomasville 22-6 and 20-1 in a doubleheader. Kyndall Snipes had three hits, including a home run. A’Mya Mosby had three hits. Mykala Cook and Leyla Jones got the wins.
- Gracie Smith had three hits, including two doubles, and five RBIs in Uwharrie Charter’s 15-8 win over Chatham Charter. Aubrie Kauffman had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Peyton Williams had a single, double and an RBI. Bristol Manne had a run-scoring double.
- Kaiyla Burnette had four hits, including two doubles, as Wheatmore outscored Salisbury 17-10. Kyndal Kindley had four hits and four RBIs. Adalyn Boles also had four hits, including a double, and an RBI. Bella Dill had three hits and two RBIs. Maddie Nichols had three hits and and RBI. Savannah Heiney had two hits and two RBIs. Kylie Hemric had two hits and an RBI. Zoey Bugg had a hit and two RBIs.
- Kadence Swaney had three hits and an RBI in Eastern Randolph’s 8-5 loss to Jordan-Matthews. Wynne Bartholow also had three hits. Raegan Beaver and Amanda Crabtree each had an RBI double.
- Ivey had a home run, triple and five RBIs in Randleman’s 9-4 win over Western Alamance. Elsie Prince and Dees each had two hits and an RBI. Natalie Roach had a hit and an RBI. Ivey pitched an eight-hitter with two strikeouts.
- Kenzie Duty pitched a four-hitter with two strikeouts as Uwharrie Charter beat North Stanly 2-1 in eight innings. Katelyn West had a single, double and RBI. Carly Rush also had two hits.
- Dill had three hits and three RBIs in Wheatmore’s 16-6 loss to West Davidson. Nichols had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs.
- Campbell Ziemba threw a one-hitter over six innings with 14 strikeouts as Providence Grove downed Morehead 7-2. Callie Lambert was 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs. Ruby Caudle had two hits and pitched a scoreless inning. Lara Wiseman and Tatum Wiatt both had two hits.
Soccer
Taryn Waugh scored five goals in Providence Grove’s 6-0 win over Southeast Guilford. Alisa Shaw got the other goal. Anna Winstead had two assists. Malina Maravilla and Iris Zelaya each made one save.
- Grace Bigelow, Anson Frazier and Karen Cox scored goals as Asheboro beat Southwestern Randolph 3-0. Chloe Chanmaly had two assists and Jair Arellano had one. Emma Little made four saves.
- Natalie Bowman scored four goals and Jocelyn McDowell had three in Wheatmore’s 10-1 rout of Thomasville. Hallie Myers had a pair of goals and Emmie Messner had one. Bowman had an assist.
- Makensie Case scored the goal and Selina Arroyo had the assist as Trinity beat North Carolina Leadership Academy 1-0.
- Bowman scored four more goals and had two assists in Wheatmore’s 6-1 win over East Davidson. Bri Hill and Messmer got the other goals. Addelyn Hedrick and Kay Rosenbaum each had an assist. Ashley Swaney made five saves.
- Arellano scored two goals in Asheboro’s 5-1 win over Randleman. Sofia Valencia, Penny Smith and Bigelow got the other goals. Katie Jones, Smith, Arellano, Cox and Chenmaly had assists. Little made four saves.
- Rylee Stover had five goals and Kaylan Currin had four as Providence Grove routed Jordan-Matthews 10-1. Anna Winstead scored the other goal. Currin had three assists while Ariyanna Loveday, Stover and Winstead each had one. Maravilla made two saves.
- Little made 13 saves in Asheboro’s 1-0 loss to Southern Alamance.
Tennis
William Slate, Joshua Prochnau and Brady Howell won in singles as Asheboro edged Montgomery Central 5-4. The doubles teams of Prochnau/Howell and Liam Lambert/Slate also won.
- Silas Jessup and Avery Plummer won singles for Wheatmore in the Warriors’ 7-2 loss to West Davidson.
Golf
Uwharrie Charter’s Coen Branson and Wheatmore’s Ryan Marshall were co-medalists in a PAC match at Colonial Country Club. UCA’s Will Thompson shot a 43 and Trinity’s Bo Earnhardt had a 44.
UCA won the team title.
- Asheboro was third in a four-team match at Grandover Resort. Charlie Knott led the Blue Comets with a 42 and Lee Hooker had a 43.
- Knott shot a 44 for Asheboro as the Blue Comets were third in a four-team tournament won by Southern Alamance.
- Easton Gravely shot a 45 for Southwestern Randolph, which finished third in a three-team match at Tot Hill Farm Club.
Boys Wrestling
Asheboro’s Omar Basyouny, Esteban Santos, Osca Zelaya, Berik Bigelow and Jeffrey Harper were named to the all-MPC team.
Girls Wrestling
Asheboro’s Emma Redding and Andrea Thornton were named to the all-MPC team.
Boys Swimming
Asheboro’s Stefan Reedy was named to the all-MPC team.
Girls Swimming
Asheboro’s Maci Columbia was named Swimmer of the Year in the MPC.
Boys Track & Field
Asheboro won a six-team meet with Southwestern Randolph, Wheatmore, Jordan-Matthews, South Davidson and Eastern Randolph.
Winning for Asheboro were Aaron Tyson (110-meter hurdles, triple jump, high jump, pole vault), Luke Brumley (100-meter dash), the 4x200 relay, the 4x100 relay, Michael Mark (300-meter hurdles), Jaydon Spruill (long jump), Boone Hinesley (discus) and Jorge Caceres Dominguez (shot put).
Winning for Wheatmore were Dakota Ludwick (400 meters, 200 meters) and the 4x400 relay.
Girls Track & Field
Asheboro won a five team meet with Wheatmore, South Davidson, Southwestern Randolph and Jordan-Matthews.
Winning for Asheboro were Nyla Price (100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles), Jalaya Showers (100-meter dash, long jump), the 4x400 relay, Rebecca Wilson (high jump) and Sarah Reeder (pole vault).
Winning for Wheatmore were the 4x800 relay and Scarlett Hildreth (800 meters).
Winning for Southwestern Randolph were the 4x200 relay, the 4x100 relay and Gracie Hodgin (400 meters).
Winning for Eastern Randolph was Miriana Corea (shot put, discus).
