Cam Letterlough
ASHEBORO — Cam Letterlough had one of the most successful seasons in NCHSAA boys soccer history last fall and the honors continue after graduation.
Asheboro High School’s Letterlough was named to the West Team for the annual East-West boys soccer game, which is sponsored by the North Carolina Coaches Association, but he has elected to skip the game because of previous plans to travel to Mexico to visit family. The game is set for July 22 at Jamieson Stadium in Greensboro. A total of 16 players were chosen for the West squad.
“I do want to play, but it’s the same weekend I’m going to see my grandparents in Mexico,” Letterlough said. “I told them (last Wednesday).”
Letterlough led the state in points his senior year, finishing with 78 goals and 28 assists for 182 points. His 78 goals were second in the state to Newton Grove’s Henry Jorge-Garcia’s 82 and his 26 assists tied him for 11th best in the state.
Letterlough, who is heading to Chowan in the fall, led the Blue Comets to a 27-3 record last year as the Blue Comets advanced to the state 3-A championship game, a 4-3 loss to Western Alamance.
“It’s always something that people ask about, playing in the state finals, and it will always be stuck in my head,” Letterlough said.
Since the season ended, Letterlough has stayed busy by practicing, training and remaining as healthy as possible.
“I am getting physically and mentally prepared for the next level,” he said.
Letterlough has been training younger kids, passing on his vast knowledge of the sport to the next generation.
“It’s been great so far,” he said of his training sessions, which are held at the Zoo City Sportsplex. “I want to help the kids try and improve and let them know what to work on.”
