League play has begun, with Asheboro taking an early lead in the Triad Area Athletic Conference after surviving two close shaves last week. Meanwhile, Uwharrie Charter hosted its annual Pin Down Autism Duals wrestling tournament and went 8-0 and Eastern Randolph was 5-3 in the eight-team event. Here are some highlights from those and other encounters last week.
Boys Basketball
■ Trey Burnett scored 15 points to lead a balanced effort as Randleman beat Eastern Randolph 69-56. Damari Green scored 11 points while John Kirkpatrick had 9. Brandon Boone and Connor Cassidy each had 8 points.
Tyler Gee led Eastern Randolph with a game-high 19 points. A.J. McDaniel added 9 points.
■ Andrew Thomas scored 21 points as Providence Grove beat West Davidson 70-62. Gabe McKoy had 19 points and 6 rebounds. Cam Jones had 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
■ Cassidy scored 12 points to lead Randleman to a 75-17 rout of Montgomery Central. Damari Garner had 11 points and Trey Burnett added 10.
■ Avery Ivey supplied 20 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists as Wheatmore downed Thomasville 55-46. Jordan Starkey had 16 points and 3 rebounds. Truman Auman had 9 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks.
■ Nirey White poured in 27 points as Asheboro outlasted Southeast Guilford 66-63. Jewell Barrett-Riggins scored 20 points and Darrion Johnson had 10.
■ Kenan Sugg scored 17 points in
Southwestern Randolph’s 64-55 win over Chatham Charter. Trivett Kennedy had 16 points and Colton McKee added 10.
■ Mason Ingram dominated with 38 points as Trinity beat East Davidson 66-51 in double overtime. Ingram scored 11 points in the second overtime period. Max Routh had 13 points and Jackson Lee had 9.
■ Starkey led the way with 21 points and 6 assists in Wheatmore’s 71-49 rout of East Davidson. Ivey contributed 11 points and 8 assists. Collin Dodd had 10 points, 2 assists and 2 steals.
■ Jeremiah Stanback scored 12 points as Asheboro edged Northern Guilford 49-47. Darrion Johnson added 11 points and Nirey White had 8.
■ Trivett Kennedy scored 17 points in Southwestern Randolph’s 60-47 victory over Uwharrie Charter. Colton McKee and Kenan Sugg each had 10 points.
Jaxon Mabe, Justyce Lawson and Kareem Helms all scored 10 points for Uwharrie Charter.
Girls Basketball
■ Bella Byman scored 20 points in Randleman’s 50-35 win over Eastern Randolph. Lanie Hall had 13 points and Aislyn Laughlin had 8.
Callie Craven led Eastern Randolph with 13 points and Reagan Beaver had 12.
■ Kailey Brown scored 19 points and Maliyah Bradley had 12 in Asheboro’s 49-46 loss to Southeast Guilford.
■ Navaeh Staples scored 9 points and Kayla Brown added 8 in Uwharrie Charter’s 36-31 loss to Eastern Guilford.
■ Jordin George scored 21 points as Southwestern Randolph pounded Chatham Charter 56-25. Nauttica Parrish had 12 points and Kennedie Welborn had 9. Maddie Strider added 8 points.
■ Laneane Scherer scored 18 points in Asheboro’s 73-58 loss to Northern Guilford. Adalynn Scherer scored 12 points and Maliyah Brady had 11.
■ George scored 18 points while Strider had 16 and Parrish 14 in Southwestern Randolph’s 60-53 win over Uwharrie Charter.
Staples led Uwharrie Charter with 14 points. Lainey Thomas scored 10 points and Naimah Al-Arif had 9.
Boys Wrestling
■ Uwharrie Charter swept eight matches in its Pin Down Autism Duals, defeating Athens Drive (50-24), Northern Guilford (72-6), Albemarle (83-0), Alleghany (67-12), New Bern (34-31), North Rowan (70-12), Eastern Randolph (69-9) and Southern Lee (76-6).
Andrew White and Lorenzo Alston were 8-0 for the Eagles. Caleb Saldana, Brennan Worrell and Travis Nobles were 7-0. Huntley Adcock and Michael Shropshire were 6-0. Rylan Alvarez was 5-0 and Michael Hardie was 4-0. Ric Riccardella and Jesse Bowles were 7-1 while Paxton Kearns was 6-1. Maddox Goble and Ayven Virasone Chitavong were 6-2. Dakken Rodrigues was 4-4 and Brice Pearson went 1-2.
Eastern Randolph was 5-3, defeating Albemarle (54-24), North Rowan (59-12), Southern Lee (69-6), Alleghany (35-32), and Northern Guilford (52-30). The Wildcats lost to Athens Drive (44-33), New Bern (65-9) and Uwharrie Charter (69-9).
David Lambright went 8-0 for the Wildcats. Maddox Carson was 7-1. Zeph Dunn and Joshua Watson were 4-1. Jamie Crabtree was 6-2. James Combs went 5-2 and Lucas Kennedy was 5-3. Trever Crabtree and Trevor Young were 4-3. Ethan Thomas and Hayden Payne were 4-4. Eli Kidd was 2-6.
■ Randleman was 3-3 in the Falcon Duals at North Carolina Leadership Academy, defeating Walkertown (54-24), N.C. Lead-ership Academy (46-30) and Oak Grove (47-36) while falling to High Point Christian Academy (48-36), Wesleyan Christian Academy (51-30) and East Wilkes (54-29).
Alex Raymundo, David Pugh and Lloy Busan were 6-0 for the Tigers. Sanii Bosan and Hunter Hall were 5-1. Landon Hunter and Braxton Trotter were 4-2. Caden Littlejohn was 2-4. Preston Morgan, Kaiden Stone and Stephen Lake were 1-5.
■ Trinity won the Gavin Sharpe Invitational at Mooresville.
Winners for the Bulldogs were Stephen Cross (2-0), Edgar Vasquez (3-0) and Joseph Trahan (3-0). Aiden Burkholder (2-1), Addam Bernal (2-1) and Hezekyah Matson (2-1) were second. Jeven Palmeri (3-1), Omega Edge (3-1) and Grayson Carroll (2-1) were third. Simeon Hammett (2-2) and Anees Khan (2-2) were fourth. Harris Idrees was 1-2.
■ SW Randolph went 3-2 at its Cougar Duals. The Cougars beat Asheboro (42-36), Douglas Byrd (78-5) and Salisbury (56-18) while losing to Apex Friendship (40-36) and Montgomery Central (42-39).
Ryder DeGraff and Nathan Garner were 5-0 for the Cougars. Carson Jacobs and Whyatt Williams were 4-0. Jamir Jaimes, Aaron Rosales and Carter Horsefield were 4-1. Rafael Flores and Kayden Plummer were 3-1. Dallas Rambo was 2-2. Ryan Owens, Tony Bustos Avendano, Dante Lattanzi, Leland Davis and Tyler Taylor were 2-3.
Asheboro was 2-3, defeating Douglas Byrd (66-6) and Salisbury (51-29) while losing to Apex Friendship (48-30), Southwestern Randolph (42-36) and Montgomery Central (53-18).
Omar Basyouny, Oscar Zelaya and Owen Chidester went 5-0 for the Blue Comets. Turcan Kilic went 4-1. Javier Castillo was 3-1. Jose Martinez, Quanta McRae and Jonah Lester were 3-2. Aaron Moran was 2-2. Hunter Arroyo was 1-2, Braiden Morales was 1-3 and Trent King was 1-4.
■ Asheboro trounced Southern Guilford 66-6. Jeffrey Harper, Kilic, Basyouny, Arroyo, Morales, Zelaya, Martinez, King, McRae, Chidester and Lester won for the Blue Comets.
■ Eastern Randolph downed Northwood 50-24. Armani Tapia-Sosa, Kennedy, Lambright, Trever Crabtree, Jamie Crabtree, Young, Kidd, Combs and Carson won for the Wildcats.
■ Trinity overpowered Providence Grove 68-9. Trent Walker, Simeon Hammett, Palmeri, Burkholder, Cross, Vasquez, Edge, Matson, Bernal, Idrees, Carroll and Trahan won for the Bulldogs.
Malachi Combo and Ryan Bullard won for Providence Grove.
Girls Wrestling
■ Asheboro’s Alaina Scherer (3-1) was third in the Women’s Invitational at R.J. Reynolds. Grace Redding (2-2) was fourth. Ganelli Trejo went 3-2 and Angie Lopez was 1-2.
Boys Indoor Track
■ Asheboro placed sixth in the Firebird Invitational at JDL Fast Track.
Winning for Asheboro was Aaron Tyson (pole vault).
■ Wheatmore’s 4x800 relay (Jackson Meade, Eli Brooks, Nathan Varner, Isaiah Brooks) took first place in the Grolar Bear Meet No. 1 at Oak Grove.
Other county winners were the Trinity 4x200 relay, Trinity’s Cayden Pugh (high jump), Trinity’s Kha’dn Fuller (long jump) and Randleman’s Izaiah Troxler (shot put)..
Girls Indoor Track
■ Asheboro finished third in the Firebird Invitational at JDL Fast Track
Winning for the Blue Comets was Jalaya Showers (55 meters, long jump).
■ Trinity’s Leyla Martinez won the 500-meter run and Wheatmore’s Kylyn Surratt took the pole vault in the Grolar Bear Meet No. 1 at Oak Grove.
