LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Another interesting week on the diamond

Randolph County Post 45 continued its cardiac finishes, Liberty Post 81 picked up some wins and the Asheboro ZooKeepers continued their winning ways last week. Meanwhile, Jake Riddle picked up one of the top honors as the Piedmont Athletic Conference announced their spring all-conference awards. Here’s a recap.

American Legion Baseball 

■ Sam Gore had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs in Randolph County’s 14-2 romp over Moore County. Riddle also had two hits and three RBIs. Kyle Dillow had two hits and two RBIs. Lucas Connor had three hits while Jackson Hill and Ashton Poe had two hits apiece. Brady Armfield had an RBI double. Keaton Hill pitched five innings with six strikeouts. Price Kidd pitched a scoreless sixth inning with one strikeout.

■ Dillow was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs as Randolph County rallied for a 15-10 win over Liberty. Post 45 trailed 9-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning before scoring seven runs to get back in the game. Connor had a two-run double and finished with three RBIs. John Kirkpatrick was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Sam Gore added a two-run single.

Chance Holdaway and Avery Wright homered for Liberty. Holdaway was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Cade McCallum went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and three RBIs. Wright was 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

■ Hudson Deel was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs in Randolph County’s 11-1 rout of Beverly/Lowell  (Ohio). Poe went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Gore and Riddle were both 2-for-3 with an RBI. Connor was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Armfield was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Dillow pitched a six-inning two-hitter with four strikeouts and two walks.

■ Landon Albright pitched a one-hitter as Liberty beat Moore County 6-1. Albright struck out four and walked      three. The run was unearned. Tyler    Westbrooks was 2-for-3. Holdaway was 1-for-3 with an RBI. McCallum had an RBI. Maddox Dunn and Albright each had two hits. John Wittig was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Bryson Marley pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits and three earned runs with six strikeouts and five walks.

Liberty took a 3-0 lead in the regularly scheduled game but fell 6-3. Weston Murphy was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Holdaway had an RBI. 

■ Deel went 3-for-5, including a three-run homer and five RBIs, as Randolph County rallied for a 10-6 win over Chatham County. Post 45 trailed 6-1 heading into the bottom of the third inning before bouncing back. Armfield was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Jackson Hill had three hits. Riddle pitched a complete game and was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Dillow had a sacrifice fly.

■ Jackson Vaughn was 2-for-5, including a two-run homer, and Liberty held on for a 7-6 win over Davidson County in the completion of a suspended game. McCallum was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Westbrooks was 3-for-4.

ZooKeepers Baseball

■ Sylas Boris smashed two home runs and drove in three runs as the Zookeepers downed Martinsville 9-5. Chazz Grossington provided a three-run double and Brady McGuire delivered a two-run sin gle. Cameron Austin was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Braxton Walker pitched 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out three, to get the win. 

■ Blake Brookins smashed a three-run homer in the Zookeepers’ 8-6 loss to Zebulon. Reggie Sharpe was 3-for-3 and Drue Saez had two hits. Daniel Stephens had an RBI single.

■ Grossington had a two-run double and Boris was 1-for-4 with two RBIs in the Zookeepers’ 7-5 loss to the Macon Bacon. Brookins had an RBI single. Seth Way allowed a hit and run in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

■ Bryce Smith pitched a shutout for five innings, allowing four hits and striking out six as the Zookeepers beat the Lexington County Blowfish 4-1. Brandon Cole pitched a scoreless inning, Caydon Laird gave up a run in two innings and Braxton Walker hurled a scoreless ninth inning to pick up a save. McGuire was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Boris was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Prep Baseball

■ Randleman’s Jake Riddle was named Player of the Year in the Piedmont Athletic Conference and the Tigers’ John Kirkpatrick was named Pitcher of the Year.

Joining them on the all-PAC team were Jackson Hill, Tate Andrews, Kyle Dillow and Gavin Vanover.

Softball

■ Randleman’s Josh Ashby was named Coach of the Year in the PAC.

The Tigers’ Kadie Green, Addyson Dees, Kinzie Ivey, Kaylee Phillips and Ella Rogers were named to the all-PAC team. 

Boys Golf

■ Terry Linthicum of Randleman was named Coach of the Year in the PAC. Tigers making the all-PAC team were Landon Cook, Kadeb Beasley, Cameron Ashley and Cayden Stamey.

Girls Soccer 

■ Randleman’s Camila Reyes, Carolina Candelero, Kendall Fortson, Kenzie Vaughan and Mary Mercado Vasquez were named to the all-PAC team.

Boys Track & Field 

■ Randleman’s Izaiah Troxler was named Field Athlete of the Year in the PAC. Joining him on the all-PAC team were Bryson Nall, Fareed Ray, Jazai Cassady, Kayden Saunders, Matthew Bowman and Zeirene Williams.

Girls Track & Field 

■ Randleman’s Alexis Vaughan, Janiyah Brooks and Reagan Henley made the all-PAC team.
