It was a busy week for winter sports in the county, with athletes and teams looking to find the right groove as Christmas approaches. Here are some highlights.
Boys Basketball
■ Kenan Sugg scored 19 points as Southwestern Randolph beat Wheatmore 54-46. Trivett Kennedy added 16 points.
Collin Dodd led Wheatmore with 15 points and 4 steals. Avery Todd had 14 points and 5 assists. Karson Edwards had eight points.
■ Andrew Thomas scored 14 points as Providence Grove edged Southwestern Randolph 56-55. Cam Jones scored 9 points while Will Dabbs, Gabe McKoy and Holden Swift all had 8.
Levi Dalke led Southwestern Randolph with 15 points. Sugg had 13 points while Kennedy had 11 and Colton McKee 10.
■ Nirey White scored 24 points as Asheboro beat Eastern Randolph 63-47. Eli Johnson contributed 15 points, Jewel Barrett-Riggins had 11 and Ryan Headen 8.
Tyler Gee scored a game-high 27 points for Eastern Randolph.
■ Max Routh scored 27 points in Trinity’s 58-49 loss to North Carolina Leadership Academy. Jackson Lee posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds along with a pair of blocks for the Bulldogs.
■ Connor Cassidy scored 21 points and Pacey Wagner had 12 in Randleman’s 64-50 loss to T.W. Andrews in the first conference game for both teams.
■ Will Dabbs scored 23 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in Providence Grove’s 68-39 romp over North Da-vidson. Cam Jones had 16 points and 4 steals. Andrew Thomas had 13 points and 7 assists. Gabe McKoy had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Holden Swift had 4 points and 12 rebounds.
■ Dodd led the way with 22 points in Wheatmore’s 48-46 win over North Moore.
■ Sugg scored 18 points and Kennedy had 15 in Southwestern Randolph’s 51-46 win over West Davidson.

Girls Basketball
■ Maliyah Brady scored 22 points as Asheboro romped to a 56-21 win over Thomasville. Ady Scherer scored 14 points and Laneane Scherer added 11.
■ Jordin George scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in Southwestern Randolph’s 48-30 win over Wheatmore. Maddie Strider scored 13 points while Nauttica Parrish had 9 points and 6 rebounds.
Kinsley Davis led Wheatmore with 10 points and Kaelyn Whiteheart had 8.
■ Madison Hill scored 17 points while Ava Nance had 11 in Trinity’s 52-32 win over North Carolina Leadership Academy.
■ Naveah Staples poured in 27 points and became Uwharrie Charter’s all-time leading scorer in a 58-53 victory over Pinecrest. Lainey Thomas added 10 points.
■ Naimah Al-Arif scored 15 points in Uwharrie Charter’s 56-22 rout of Chatham Charter. Thomas had 10 points.
■ Jacquiline McDaniel scored 11 points and blocked a pair of shots in Randleman’s 43-23 loss to T.W. Andrews.
■ Hill scored 23 points and Nance added a career-high 17 points in Trinity’s 62-12 rout of South Davidson.
Boys Wrestling
■ Trinity won the Eye of the Tiger Invitational at Mount Pleasant. Southwestern Randolph was 10th.
Jeven Palmeri (3-0), Aiden Burkholder (4-0), Stephen Cross (4-0), Omega Edge (4-0), and Joseph Trahan (4-0) took first place for Trinity. Edgar Vasquez (3-1) placed second. Harris Idrees (4-2) and Grayson Carroll (3-2) were fourth. Hezekyah Matson and Simeon Hammett were 3-2. Addam Bernal was 2-2 and Gavin Schaefer was 1-2.
Southwestern Randolph’s Nathan Garner (4-1) was third and Owen Pearson (6-2) was fourth. Rafael Flores was 5-2. Kayden Plummer was 4-2. Whyatt Williams was 3-2. Jamir Jaimes was 2-2. Ryder Degraff, Dante Lattanzi, Tyler Taylor, Dallas Rambo and Carter Horsefield were 1-2.
■ Providence Grove dropped a close 42-40 decision to West Davidson.
Winning for the Patriots were Jeremiah Payne, Aiden Poplin, Caden Mercado, Connor Pritchard, Malachi Combo, Charles Villaggio and Wyatt Signor.
■ Wheatmore swept a tri-match with Northeast Guilford (65-9) and Thomasville (77-6).
Jonathan Wall, Christopher Scott, Landon Watkins, Brodie Bates, Andrew Fayne, Camden Gillespie, Dylan Harris, Terry Gillespie, Spencer Moore and Dominic Hittepole were all 2-0. Ben Dudley, Laythan Brown, Easton Dewitt and Peyton Russo were 1-1.
■ Asheboro fell 60-18 to Mount Airy. Winning for the Blue Comets were Esteban Santos, Oscar Zelaya and Jose Martinez.
■ Randleman fell 47-30 to Ledford. Winning for the Tigers were Alex Raymundo, Lloy Bosan, Shane Stevens, John Roswick, David Pugh and Hunter Hall.
■ Uwharrie Charter overwhelmed Jordan-Matthews 84-0. Winning for the Eagles were Maddox Goble, Ayven Virasone Chitavong, Andrew White, Paxton Kearns, Huntley Adcock, Caleb Saldana, Brennan Worrell, Ric Riccardella, Travis Nobles, Dakken Rodrigues, Lorenzo Alston, Rylan Alvarez, Jesse Bowles and Michael Shropshire.
■ Eastern Randolph swept Central Carolina Academy (57-23) and North Moore 71-12 in a tri-match.
Armani Tapia-Sosa, Joshua Watson, Lucas Kennedy, David Lambright, Zeph Dunn, Trever Crabtree, Jamie Crabtree, James Combs and Maddox Carson went 2-0 for the Wildcats. Amanda Crabtree was 1-0. Ethan Thomas, Trevor Young and Hayden Payne were 1-1.
■ Southwestern Randolph beat North-wood (45-35) and lost (54-16) to Eastern Guilford.
Nathan Garner, Rafael Flores and Kayden Plummer were 2-0 for the Cougars. Jamir Jaimes, Dante Lattanzi, Aaron Rosales, Tyler Taylor, Dallas Rambo and Carter Horsefield were 1-1.
Girls Wrestling
■ Asheboro was seventh and Wheatmore 22nd in the Jim King Invitational at Orange High School.
The Blue Comets’ Andrea Thornton (2-1) was second and Grace Redding (3-1) was third. Andreona Thornton (2-2) was fourth. Brianna Munoz and Ganelli Trejo were 1-2.
Wheatmore’s Callie Griffin was 2-2.
■ Uwharrie Charter fell 36-12 to Jordan-Matthews. Riley White and Avriana Whitfield won for the Eagles.
Boys Swimming
■ Asheboro fell 141-88 to Southeast Guilford in a dual meet.
Winning events for the Blue Comets were Jorge Reyes (500 meters), and Darian Jaimes (100 breaststroke).
■ Wheatmore finished second in a Central Carolina Conference meet at High Point Swim Club.
Winning events for the Warriors were Alex Vega-Torres (100-meter freestyle), Jaden Kilcullen (100-meter backstroke) and Landon Weeks (100-meter breaststroke).
■ Wheatmore was third in a five-team meet won by Bishop McGuinness.
Weeks was the Warriors’ top finisher, placing second in the 200-yard freestyle.
Girls Swimming
■ Asheboro fell 149-70 to Southeast Guilford in a dual meet.
Winning events for the Blue Comets were Skye Harris (500 meters),and the 400-meter freestyle relay (Emily Jones, Melody Alvarez, Penelopy McConaughay, Allison Zeyla-Dubon).
■ Wheatmore placed second in a CCC meet at High Point Swim Club.
Winning events for the Warriors were the 200-meter freestyle relay (Sophie Williamson, Kylyn Surratt, MaKenna Lawrence, Jillian Wolfe) and Wolfe (100-meter backstroke).
■ Wheatmore was third in a five-team meet won by Bishop McGuinness.
Wolfe finished second in the 100-yard freestyle.
Boys Indoor Track
■ Asheboro finished third in Polar Bear meet No. 1 at Eastern Alamance.
Winning for the Blue Comets were Aaron Tyson (triple jump) and Boone Hinesly (shot put).
Girls Indoor Track
■ Asheboro finished third in Polar Bear meet No. 1 at Eastern Alamance.
Winning for the Blue Comets were Jalaya Showers (55 meters) and Cadence Waters (55-meter hurdles).
Winning for Eastern Randolph was Mirianna Corea (shot put).
