American Legion Baseball

■ Carter Brown smashed a grand slam and Randolph County held on for a 7-6 win over Chatham County to sweep their Area III first-round best-of-three playoff series. Post 45 got the winning run on an Ethan Willard sacrifice fly. Drew Harmon got the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Randolph County advanced to a quarterfinal series against Mooresville.

■ Mason Taylor had a double and three RBIs as Liberty beat Hamlet 11-5 in a storm-shortened game to sweep their Area III first-round best-of-three playoff series. Cade McCallum, Noah Lester and Ethan Mann each had a hit and two RBIs. Maddox Dunn had two hits. McCallum was the winning pitcher, hurling two innings. Play was halted in the fifth inning because of rain associated with Tropical Storm Chantal. Liberty advanced to a quarterfinal series with Rowan County.

■ Mark King and Dunn each had two hits in Liberty’s 11-2 loss to Rowan County in Game 1 of their best-of-three Area III quarterfinal series. Lester had an RBI single.

■ Will Stalker’s fielder’s choice grounder drove in Eli Holland with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as Liberty rallied for a 6-5 win over Rowan County in Game 2 of their Area III best-of-three quarterfinal series, evening it at 1-1. Liberty trailed 5-2 before scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lester had an RBI single and Holland tied the game with a two-run double. Bryson Marley pitched 5 1/3 innings of one-hit relief with three strikeouts to get the win. Lester and Holland were both 2-for-5. Dunn was 3-for-4.

■ Randolph County fell 9-6 to Mooresville in Game 1 of their best-of-three Area III quarterfinal series. The game was played over two days because of a successful protest by Randolph County. Willard had two hits, including a triple, and RBI. Caleb Coggins had a two-run single. Jake Riddle had two hits.

■ Randolph County drubbed Mooresville 12-4 to even their Area III quarterfinal series at 1-1. Zack Scruggs and Coggins each had a single, double and three RBIs for Post 45, which broke open a close game in the later innings. Willard had two hits and an RBI. Tate Andrews had an RBI double. Brown and Riddle each had an RBI single. Walker allowed four runs in five innings and got the win. Riddle pitched two innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts.

■ Noah Madren was 2-for-3 with an RBI in Liberty’s 7-1 loss to Rowan County in Game 3 of their Area III best-of- three quarterfinal series. Rowan County won the series 2-1. King and Marley each had two hits. Liberty ended the season with a 10-14 record.

■ Randolph County edged Mooresville 8-7 in 10 innings in Game 3 of their Area III best-of-three quarterfinal series. Post 45 won the series 2-1 and advanced to the semifinal round to play Union County in a best-of-five series

ZooKeepers Baseball

■ Seojun Oh had a hit and four RBIs as the ZooKeepers outlasted the Tri-City Chili Peppers 14-9. Jarrett Pokrovsky was 1-for-4 with three RBIs. Jake Griffith went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Tri-City pitchers issued 14 walks while ZooKeeper hurlers walked 12.

■ Boaz Harper smashed a two-run homer in the ZooKeepers’ 14-4 loss to the High Point-Thomasville HiToms. Kruise Newman belted a solo home run while Pokrovsky went 2-for-3 with an RBI. 

Brooks Brannon update

■ The former Randleman star and Boston Red Sox draft pick was batting .241 with 6 home runs and 34 RBIs for the Salem (Va.) Red Sox — the High-A affiliate of the Red Sox —  through games of July 12.
