LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: High-scoring games highlight the week

Lots of baserunners and scoring last week in summer baseball action in Randolph County. Heat apparently didn’t affect many hitters. Here’s a recap of some of the highlights.

American Legion Baseball 

■ Hudson Deel and Brady Armfield both smashed two-run homers in Randolph County’s 13-9 win over Davidson County. Ashton Poe had a three-run double and Grant Kirk doubled in a run. Jake Riddle had two hits and scored three runs. Price Kidd got the win with 5 1/3 innings of relief. Kidd allowed three unearned runs and struck out six.

■ Tate Andrews had three hits, including two doubles, and five RBIs while allowing an unearned run with six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings as Randolph County outscored Davidson County 14-10. Armfield smashed a three-run homer and Jackson Hill had three hits with an RBI. Caleb Coggins had two hits and an RBI. Lucas Connor had two hits, including a double.

■ Keaton Hill gave up one earned run and struck out six in five innings in Randolph County’s 3-0 loss to Chatham County. Hudson Deel had the only hit for Post 45.

■ Hayden Robbins was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in Liberty’s 14-12 loss to Chatham County. Avery Wright went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Tyler Westbrooks had three hits and Carter Mustian went 2-for-4. Chance Holdaway, Bryson Marley and Weston Murphy each had a hit and an RBI. 

■ Westbrooks was 2-for-3 and scored both runs in Liberty’s 12-2 loss to Chatham County. Robbins had an RBI.

■ Robbins went 1-for-2 with an RBI in Liberty’s 14-1 loss to Hamlet.

■ Kyle Dillow was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief in Randolph County’s 8-4 win over Moore County. John Kirkpatrick and Hill both had two hits and an RBI. Coggins was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Sean Jennison pitched 5 1/3 innings, striking out six and allowing four runs.

■ Mason Taylor had two hits in Liberty’s 10-0 loss to Hamlet.

ZooKeepers Baseball 

■ Blake Brookins was 3-for-4, including his third home run of the season, with three RBIs and the Zookeepers beat the Boone Bigfoots 9-6. Thomas Cano-Piszel added a solo home run while Reggie Sharpe, Brady McGuire and Drue Saenz all had two hits. Cameron Austin and Daniel Stephens had RBI hits. Joseph Yamamoto (2-0) pitched five innings, allowing three runs and three hits, to get the win. Braxton Walker pitched a scoreless inning.

■ Brookins belted his fourth home run of the season and was 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the Zookeepers’ 10-7 loss to Morehead City. Wilmis Castro went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Stephens was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sharpe was 2-for-5. Wyatt Bush and Josh Martinez both had RBI hits.

■ Olmedo Quezada and three relievers combined on a six-hitter as the Zookeepers blanked Boone 8-0. Quezada went five innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts. Caydon Laird pitched two innings while Robert Ahlgren and Walker were on the mound for an inning apiece. Brookins smashed a three-run homer, his fifth, and McGuire went 4-for-5. Sharpe was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jackson Hood was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Sylas Boris was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Castro had two hits.

■ Austin was 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs as the Zookeepers took a wild 18-10 win over the Martinsville Mustangs. Sharpe was 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Brookins and McGuire both had two hits and two RBIs. Chazz Grossington was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Josh Martinez was 2-for-6. Starting pitcher Carlos Gomez allowed one hit and a run with eight strikeouts in four innings. Alex Graber pitched 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief and McCall Biemiller went one hitless inning.

■ Cano-Piszel was 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs in the Zookeepers’ 18-8 loss to the Florence Flamingos in eight innings. Stephens went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. Grossington was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Ben Shepherd pitched 2 1/3 innings of one-hit relief with five strikeouts.
