LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Highlights from a busy week

A busy week of volleyball, boys soccer, girls golf and tennis, and boys and girls cross country filled up the county last week. Below are many of the highlights, starting with a couple of football games from Friday.

Football

■ Nick Straughn ran 10 times for 130 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Providence Grove’s 45-6 romp over Jordan-Matthews. 

Hunner Norris added a rushing touchdown.

Quarterback Landon Fox was 10-of-13 for 188 yards and 2 touchdowns while also running 4 times for 50 yards. Connor Tozer had 4 catches for 97 yards and a touchdown along with an interception return for a touchdown. Braedyn Waddell had a touchdown catch. 

Kyler Keller kicked a field goal and was 6-of-6 on extra points.

■ Trinity scored its first win of the season with a 35-28 victory over Surry Central.

■ Randleman fell to 1-4 on the year after a close 28-25 loss to Felton Grove. The Tigers held the Galaxy scoreless in the second half after trailing 28-12 at halftime. They closed the gap to 28-25 in the third quarter, but couldn’t get over the hump in the fourth quarter.

Volleyball 

■ Addison Phillips had 8 kills, 13 aces and 11 assists in Wheatmore’s 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-11) sweep of Chatham Central. Kinsley Davis had 5 kills, 6 assists and 3 aces. Emma Moon and Lylah Gower both had 5 kills while Peyton McCauley had 9 assists.

■ Karrington Jones had 14 kills as Randleman rallied past Trinity 3-2 (25-18, 20-25, 24-26, 25-12, 19-17). Kaylee Phillips had 10 kills, 12 digs and 4 aces. Olivia Ashby had 17 digs and 4 aces. Lilah Covington had 7 kills, 4 blocks and 2 aces. Kenzlie Vaughn had 27 assists and Jolee McKinney added 11.

■ Caroline Way led the way with 12 kills, 7 digs and 2 blocks as Uwharrie Charter swept Richmond County 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-17). Carly Rush had 9 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces. Kam Leach had four kills, a block and an ace. Aly Hussey had 5 kills, 2 blocks and an ace. Amya Brewer had five blocks and a kill. Braelyn Green had 37 assists and a block.

■ Cheyenne Dixon had 11 kills, 7 digs and 3 aces as Southwestern Randolph swept Jordan-Matthews 3-0 (25-4, 25-15, 25-10). Payson Hammer had 6 kills and 3 aces. Kennedie Welborn added 5 kills while Mary Kathryn Coltrane had 14 assists and 3 aces.

■ Phillips put together a triple double of 11 kills, 15 assists and 10 digs along with 4 aces but Wheatmore fell 3-2 (25-21, 15-25, 21-25, 25-15, 15-6). Gower had 8 kills. Arabella Grant had 7 assists and 4 aces. Isabella Maxwell had 5 blocks and Davis had 12 digs.

■ Rush led the way with 13 kills, 2 blocks and an ace in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-0 sweep (25-6, 25-15, 25-16) of Eastern Randolph. Way had 12 kills, 7 digs and 4 aces. Green had 34 assists and 8 digs. Kaylee Thomas had 7 digs and 2 aces.

■ Dixon had 15 kills and 11 digs in Southwestern Randolph’s 3-0 sweep (25-20, 27-25, 25-10) of North Stanly. Kaylea Beck had 9 kills while Welborn had 7 kills and a block. Kardunn Rush had three blocks. Marijose Medina had 13 digs and 15 assists. Lexi Weidman had 10 digs.

■ Ady Scherer pounded 15 kills as Asheboro held off Randleman 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19, 15-9). Cora Little had 12 kills and 12 digs. Madeline Hodge had 8 kills while Maliyah Brady had 4 kills and 7 blocks. Kailey Brown had 33 assists and 8 aces. Lydia Scearce had 5 aces and Lily Hunt had 17 digs.

Jones led Randleman with 12 kills while Covington contributed 10 kills and 3 blocks. Kaylee Phillips had 10 kills, 14 digs and 3 aces. McKinney had 18 assists and 7 aces. Ashby had 24 digs. Vaughn had 16 assists and 7 digs.

■ Sara-Kate Marion had 8 kills while Beck and Hammer had 5 apiece in Southwestern Randolph’s 3-0 sweep (25-11, 25-9, 25-11) of Northwood. Dixon had 4 kills and 8 aces. Coltrane had 24 assists.

■ Avalynn Johnson had 38 assists and 3 aces as Trinity swept West Davidson 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-14). Mya Hooker had 11 kills and a block. Ari Pinkston had 9 kills and 6 blocks. Hayli Cox had 9 kills and a block.

■ Way had 12 kills, 2 digs and an assist in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-0 sweep (25-6, 25-12, 25-10) of Jordan-Matthews. Rush had 7 kills, 2 blocks and 3 aces. Leach had 7 kills, 2 aces and a block. Green had 38 assists, 5 digs and a kill.

Boys Soccer 

■ Ivan Castaneda scored the goal in Asheboro’s 3-1 loss to West Forysth. Juan Macias had the assist.

■ Isaac Garcia scored twice as Uwharrie Charter blanked West Davidson 6-0. Jairo Cazarin Perez, Aidan Almond, Zy Sturdivant and Iker Castro scored the other goals. Almond had two assists while Garcia and Sturdivant each had one. Connor Vaughn made six saves and Anthony Martin got two in the combined shutout.

■ Grayson Carter and Easton Dewitt scored the goals in Wheatmore’s 2-2 tie with Jordan-Matthews. Carter had an assist and Emmit Frazier made 13 saves.

Girls Golf 

■ Southwestern Randolph’s Danielle Jaecke was the medalist with a 46 and the Cougars won a Four Rivers Conference match at Siler City Country Club.

■ Katelyn Duvall shot a 44 for Randleman to finish fourth overall in a Piedmont Athletic Conference match at Blair Park. The Tigers were third out of four teams.

■ Asheboro’s Paige Kotlowski shot 41 and was third overall in a TAAC match at Asheboro Country Club. The Blue Comets were third in the three-team event.

■ Jaecke was the medalist with a 50 in Southwestern Randolph’s 171-177 win over Asheboro.

Girls Tennis 

■ Larson Kelly, Lexie Owen, Alyssa Hampton and Lily Auman won in singles as Southwestern Randolph edged North Moore 5-4. The team of Kelly/Auman won in doubles.

■ Leah Pickett, Lauren Church and Ava Botts won in singles in Wheatmore’s 5-4 win over Trinity. The doubles teams of Tatum Wagner/Pickett and Makenna Lawrence/Botts were victorious.

Kayla Neam, Makenzie Hill and Hope Blakely won in singles for Trinity. Alexi Austin and Makenzie Hill won a doubles match.

■ Charlotte Smith, Madalynn Adams, Anson Frazier, Delaney Nall, Gretchen Phipps and Ghia Crandall swept 

the singles in Asheboro’s 9-0 win over Jordan-Matthews. The doubles teams of Adams/Frazier, Smith/Nall and Crandall/Phipps also swept.

■ Owen won in singles in Southwestern Randolph’s 8-1 loss to Central Davidson.

Girls Cross Country 

■ Providence Grove’s Bailee Mitchell was second overall in a Central Carolina Conference match. The Patriots’ Lyndsay Browder was fifth. Providence Grove was third out of four teams.

■ Laurel Bernhardt of Randleman was the overall winner and the Tigers were second in a four-team Piedmont Athletic Conference meet. The Tigers’ Reagan Henley was fourth.

■ Uwharrie Charter’s Gracilyn Elliott was ninth overall in the Tyrone Hanner Invitational at Jordan-Matthews.

■ Trinity’s Ryanne Burrow was seventh and the Bulldogs were eighth in the Iredell Run 4 Life at Catawba, N.C. 

■ Wheatmore’s Scarlett Hildreth was the overall winner in a meet with Trinity and Southwestern Randolph. Trinity was the only team with points. The Bulldogs’ Burrow, Madison Hill and Kayla Franklin were second through fourth. Southwestern Randolph’s Genevieve Cranford was fifth.

Boys Cross Country 

■ Liam White was Providence Grove’s top runner, placing 10th in a four-team CCC match.

■ Randleman’s Jack Gilmartin was seventh overall in a four-team PAC meet.

■ Uwharrie Charter’s Jordan Beebe was eighth in the Tyrone Hanner Invitational.

■ Trinity’s Tommy Smithers finished ninth in the Iredell Run 4 for Life and the Bulldogs were third as a team.

■ Wheatmore’s Jake Hollingsworth was the overall winner and led the Warriors (27) to a close win over Trinity (31). Southwestern Randolph (73) was third. Smithers was second for Trinity while Rada came in third for Wheatmore. Trinity’s Dwayne Allen and Fletcher Stratton were fourth and fifth, respectively.
