LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Highlights, signings and more from last week

Several local basketball teams began to assert themselves in league play while ER’s wrestlers finished 4-1 in the Wildcats’ Greg Hardin Invitational.

Meanwhile, several volleyball and softball players signed with colleges to continue their playing careers.

Here’s a recap of those and other highlights from last week.

Boys Basketball 

■  Jordan Starkey scored 17 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 3 steals as Wheatmore outlasted West Davidson 54-49. Collin Dodd had 10 points and 5 assists. Truman Auman had 8 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks.

■ Kenan Sugg scored 17 points and Levi Dalke had 16 in Southwestern Randolph’s 75-52 win over Eastern Randolph. Colton McKee added 12 points and Trivett Kennedy had 10.

Tyle Gee led Eastern Randolph with a game-high 30 points and Emmitt Frye had 10. 

■ Nirey White led the way with 20 points as Asheboro beat Eastern Guilford 59-42. Jewel Barrett-Riggins scored 12 points and Darrion Johnson added 10.

■ Mason Ingram scored 9 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in Trinity’s 56-35 loss to Thomasville. Max Routh had 7 points and 4 assists.

■ Cam Jones poured in 28 points as Providence Grove drubbed East Davidson 80-45. Andrew Thomas added 19 points while Will Dabbs contributed 13 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Kolton Kain had 10 points.

Girls Basketball 

■ Uwharrrie Charter’s Navaeh Staples scored 28 points and the school’s all-time leading scorer surpassed 1,000 for her career in a 66-43 win over Albemarle. Lainey Thomas had 19 points.

■ Staples scored 15 points while Namaih Al-Arif and Thomas each had 10 in Uwharrie Charter’s 58-41 win over Union Academy.

■ Adalynn Scherer scored 12 points in Asheboro’s 53-29 loss to Eastern Guilford.

■ Thomas scored 14 points and Staples had 9 in Uwharrie Charter’s 61-20 rout of North Moore.

■ Jordin George scored 22 points as Southwestern Randolph raced past Eastern Randolph 67-27. Maddie Strider had 13 points and Nauttica Parrish had 9.

Roxanne Davis led Eastern Randolph with 10 points and Callie Craven had 9.

■ Madison Hill scored 19 points and Carolina Case had 13 as Trinity overwhelmed winless Thomasville 54-16.

Boys Wrestling 

■  Eastern Randolph went 4-1, defeating Albemarle (66-12), Cary (45-33), South Garner (66-11) and North Iredell (45-35) while losing to East Wilkes (42-37) in the Wildcats’ Greg Hardin Invitational. David Lambright, Trevor Young and Maddox Carson all went 5-0. Armani Tapia-Sosa, Ethan Thomas, Joshua Watson, Lucas Kennedy, Trever Crabtee and James Combs were 4-1. Brody Ritter was 2-2 while Jaylin Talley and Eli Kidd were 2-3.

Southwestern Randolph was 2-3, beating North Moore (62-15) and Albemarle (71-6) while losing to South Davidson (42-38), Apex Friendship (41-29) and East Wilkes (49-20). Owen Pearson went 5-0 for the Cougars and Nathan Garner was 4-0. Nicholas Espinoza, Carson Jacobs, Whyatt Williams and Wesley Mulkey were 1-0. Aaron Rosales, Carter Horsefield and Rafael Flores were 4-1. Ryder Degraff, Jamir Jaimes and Leland Davis were 3-2. Dante Lattanzi and Landon Nichols were 2-3. Tyler Taylor was 1-3 while Tony Bustos Avendano and Ryan Owens were 1-4.

■ Asheboro, Providence Grove and Trinity competed in the Phillip Reed Rumble at Glenn. The Blue Comets’ Jonah Lester was 5-2 and Owen Chidester was 4-2. Jose Martinez and Quanta McRae were 3-2. Jeffrey Harper was 2-2 and Turcan Kilic was 1-2.

Aiden Poplin and Charles Villaggio were 4-2 for Providence Grove. Skyler Henderson was 3-2 while Caden Mercado and Ryan Bullard were 1-2.

Trinity’s Jeven Palmeri and Joseph Trahan won their weight classes. Both were 4-0. Omar Edge was 5-1 and finished third.

Girls Wrestling 

  Asheboro competed in the Stallion Girls’ Stampede at Southeast Alamance. Alaina Scherer went 3-0 and took first place. Isla Aguirra was 1-2 and finished third. Grace Redding (2-2) was fourth. Brianna Munoz was also 2-2. Ganelli Trejo went 1-2.

■ Trinity’s Kenedi Palmer went 2-2 in the Phillip Reed Women’s Rumble at Glenn.

Boys Swimming 

■  Wheatmore finished a close second to West Davidson in the Central Carolina Conference championship. Providence Grove was fourth.

Winning events for Wheatmore were the 200-meter medley relay (Jack Tobey, Jaden Kilcullen, Landon Weeks, Payton Blackmon); Alexis Vegas-Torres (50-meter freestyle); Weeks (100-meter butterfly, 100-meter breaststroke); Kilcullen (100-meter backstroke); and the 400-meter freestyle relay (Vegas-Torres, William York, Kilcullen, Weeks).

Girls Swimming 

  Wheatmore finished second to West Davidson in the Central Carolina Conference championship. Providence Grove was fourth.

Winning events for Wheatmore were Jillian Wolfe (50-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke); and the 200-meter freestyle relay (Sophie Williamson, MaKenna Lawrence, Kylyn Surratt, Wolfe). 

Softball

■  Several county players signed with colleges. 

Providence Grove’s Lara Wiseman signed with Meredith College in Raleigh and teammate Callie Lambert signed with Louisburg. 

Uwharrie Charter’s Katelyn West signed with Averett University in Danville, VA, and teammate Kassidy Babula signed with Salem College in Winston-Salem. 

Volleyball 

■  A trio of Southwestern Randolph players signed to play the sport in college. Kinlin Hulin signed with Greensboro College, Hailey Kennedy signed with Guilford College and Maddie Baker signed with Carolina University in Winston-Salem.
