Local sports roundup: Non-football sports

Asheboro and SW Randolph continued their hot starts in soccer, and the Blue Comets in volleyball as well. But a couple of interesting notes occurred in cross country where two Wheatmore sophomores put their names in the Warrirors’ record books. Here’s a look at some of the non-football highlights for the week.

Volleyball

■ Kolbi Jo Lineberry had 5 kills and 10 digs in Providence Grove’s 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-22) loss to Western Guilford. Lara Wiseman had 5 kills and 8 digs. Cheyenne Collins had 12 assists and 2 aces. Callie Hodges had 15 digs.

■ Wiseman pounded 18 kills in Providence Grove’s 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-15) sweep of Jordan-Matthews. Collins had 20 assists, Hodges got 21 digs and Lineberry had 12 kills.

■ Emma Kate Forester had 12 kills and 4 aces in Asheboro’s 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-15) sweep of Eastern Randolph. Kailey Brown contributed 9 kills and 10 assists. Emma Little had 14 digs while Emma Ingold produced 6 aces and 12 digs. Lia George had 5 aces and 13 digs. Eva Vuncannon had 21 assists.

Reagan Beaver led Eastern Randolph with four kills. Roxanne Davis had 3 kills and 3 blocks.

■ Brown had 12 kills and 16 assists as Asheboro beat Jordan-Matthews 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20). Forester produced 9 kills, 8 blocks and 3 aces. Adalynn Scherer had 10 kills and 7 blocks. Little had 14 kills and 28 digs. Ingold supplied 4 aces and 16 digs. George had 10 kills and 19 digs.

Soccer

■ Seth Johnson, Giovanny Arellano and Justin Morales scored goals in Providence Grove’s 5-0 win over Central Davidson. Aldo Rubio made six saves.

■ Yael Rebollar Ortiz and Fernando Hernandez both scored two goals as Southwestern Randolph beat Trinity 5-1. Kevin Garcia scored the other goal. Gadiel Pantoja Negrete and Garcia all had assists. Jonathan Perez Dominguez was credited with four saves.

■ Alexander Diaz scored two goals as Asheboro blanked Randleman 6-0. Ozmar Martinez, Juan Macias, Ethan Muro and Ivan Castaneda all tallied one goal. Jonathan Ortega and Martinez had assists. 

■ Laurel Ortiz and Ryan Black both scored two goals in Wheatmore’s 5-2 win over North Davidson. Carter Queen got the other goal. Easton DeWitt had an assist and Logan Hughes made 13 saves.

■ Aaron Avina, Fernando Hernandez and Negrete all scored two goals as Southwestern Randolph overwhelmed Central Davidson 9-0. Chris Betancourt and Ortiz each had a goal and two assists. Garcia had one goal. Gio Hernandez and Richard Dominguez Torres had assists.

■ Queen scored three goals leading Wheatmore to a 5-1 win over Albemarle. Black and Ortiz got the other goals. Jake Edwards, Black and Queen had assists. Hughes made six saves.

Girls Tennis

■ Ashlynn Harbor and Jillian Cox got singles wins in Southwestern Randolph’s 7-2 loss to Gray Stone Day.

■ Tatum Wagner, Taylor Webb, Macey Tew, Leah Puckett, Annslee Billings and Emma Davidson swept the singles as Wheatmore downed Jordan-Matthews 8-1. Also winning were the doubles teams of Lauren Church/Ally Honeycutt and Puckett/Billings.

■ Charlotte Smith, Madalynn Adams, Delaney Nall, Guadalupe Soto, Anson Frazier and Victoria Rivera swept the singles as Asheboro shut out North Moore 9-0. The teams of Smith/Nall, Adams/Soto and Frazier/Rivera won the doubles.

■ Webb, Puckett, Billings and Davidson won singles contests as Wheatmore beat Ledford 6-3. Also winning were the doubles teams of Tatum Wagner/Billings and Puckett/Davidson.

■ Larson Kelly, Scarlett Kyle, Lexi Owen, Lily Auman and Caroline Farlow won in singles as Southwestern Randolph nipped Asheboro 5-4.

Anson Frazier won in singles for Asheboro. The Blue Comets swept the doubles with the teams of Smith/Nall, Adams/Soto and Frazier/Rivera winning.

Boys Cross Country

■ Wheatmore sophomore Ayden Fitzgerald was sixth in the Bob Schilly Invitational in a time of 16:48.56, the second fastest time in school history.

Girls Cross Country

■ Wheatmore’s Scarlett Hildreth finished ninth in the Bob Schilly Invitational. Hildreth, a sophomore, had a 20:44.44, the fastest time in program history.

Girls Golf

■ Providence Grove’s Megan Oakley was the medalist with a 44 as the Patriots won a three-team match with North Stanly and South Stanly at Piney Point Golf Club in Norwood.
