Local Sports Roundup: Playoffs are under way or are beginning for fall sports

Several sports are wrapping up but soccer and football teams spent the week tuning up for their turn in the postseason. Here are some highlights as the fall season winds down.

Soccer

■ Ozmar Martinez scored four goals as Asheboro shut out Southern Guilford 6-0. Henry Martinez Cruz and Jonathan Ortega recorded the other goals. Ivan Castaneda had two assists while Alexander Diaz, Carlos Gonzalez, Martinez Cruz and Martinez all had one. 

■ Aiden Almond scored the goal in Uwharrie Charter’s 10-1 loss to Jordan-Matthews. 

■ Fernando Hernandez, Chris Betancourt and Yael Rebollar Ortiz all scored two goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 9-0 rout of North Moore. Jonathan Lopez-Degollado, Michael Jaimes and Aaron Avina scored the other goals. Noah Freeman and Avina each had two assists. Griffin Hall, Braydon Tyl, Lopez-Degollado and Rebollar Ortiz all had one assist. Jonathan Perez-Dominguez made three saves.

■ Ozmar Martinez scored the goal in Asheboro’s 2-1 loss to Northern Guilford.

Volleyball

■ Karrington Jones pounded 21 kills as No. 4 Randleman beat No. 9 Southwestern Randolph 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-18) in the fourth round of the 4-A state playoffs. Natalie Roach had 43 assists and 17 digs. Lexi Vaughn had 13 kills while Lilah Covington had 10 kills and 3 aces. Kadie Green had 28 digs and Olivia Ashby had 18.

Stella Brown had 12 kills and 14 digs for Southwestern Randolph. Bailey Blackmon had 11 kills and 7 blocks. Cheyenne Dixon had 8 kills, 4 blocks and 3 aces. Kinlin Hulin had 8 kills and 7 blocks. Madilyn Baker had 18 digs. Hailey Kennedy had 22 assists, 10 digs and 2 aces. Mary Kathryn Coltrane had 19 assists.

■ Emory Johnson led the way with 34 assists, 10 digs and an ace as No. 2 Uwharrie Charter swept No. 3 East Duplin 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-17) in the fourth round of the 4-A state playoffs. Carly Rush had 14 kills and 10 digs. Caroline Way had 13 kills and 10 digs. Alyvia Spinks had 6 kills and Sadie Upchurch got 15 digs.

■ Way had 19 kills, 10 digs and 4 aces and Johnson had 32 assists, 10 digs and 1 kill as No. 2 UCA defeated No. 4 Randleman 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-15) in the state semifinals to reach the 4-A championship match. Rush had 11 kills and 10 digs, Upchurch had 15 digs, Spinks had 8 kills and 1 assist, Gracie Smith had 10 digs and Nyasia Wharton had 7 kills and 2 digs.

For Randleman, Karrington Jones had 8 kills, Lilah Covington had 5 kills and 1 block and Lexi Vaughn had 4 kills and 2 blocks.

Boys Cross Country

■ Wheatmore placed fourth in the 3-A Regional and qualified for the state meet. The Warriors’ Ayden Fitzgerald was third overall.

Girls Cross Country

■ Wheatmore was sixth in the 3-A Regional and advanced to the state meet. Scarlett Hildreth led the Warriors with a sixth-place finish.

Girls Golf

■ Providence Grove senior Megan Oakley shot an 84 and finished fourth in the 3-A state tournament at Longleaf Golf Club. The tournament was shortened to one round due to weather conditions. The Patriots were also fourth as a team, with freshman Adison Johnson placing 30th and Olivia Coleman 31st.

Wheatmore’s Kyndal Kindley shot 87 and finished seventh.

■ Southwestern Randolph, with Danielle Jaeck leading the way, was sixth in the 4-A state tournament.
