With Southwestern Randolph capturing the 4-A softball title, the Cougars second state championship in three years, that ends the prep season for 2026.
Meanwhile, here’s a wrapup of some other goings on as the summer begins.
Prep Baseball
■ Three county players committed to play in college.
Trinity’s Lincoln Coble committed to North Carolina A&T while teammate Peyton Williams opted for Guilford College.
Uwharrie Charter’s Jaxon Mabe committed to Mount Olive.
American Legion Baseball
■ Joshua Nelson had three hits and three RBIs as Liberty rallied from seven runs down to beat Mocksville-Davie 13-9. John Wittig had two hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBIs while pitching three innings with six strikeouts in relief for the win. Carlos Cordero had two hits, including a double.
■ Maddox Dunn had two hits and Grant Underwood stole home in Liberty’s 10-1 loss to Chatham County.
■ Cordero was 1-for-3 and scored on Avery Wright’s squeeze bunt but Liberty fell 2-1 in eight innings to Moore County. Chance Holdaway went the distance for Liberty, allowing seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.
ZooKeepers Baseball
■ Cameron Austin went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs as the Zookeepers opened the 2026 season with an 11-1 rout of the Boone Bigfoots. Landon Lucas was 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Daniel Stephens was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Sylas Boris was 2-for-5. The Zookeepers used five pitchers, with Tyler Stillson starting and going three innings with five strikeouts. Ian Anderson, Kyle Rudolph, Max Whitmore and Mark Salicco combined for eight shutout innings.
■ Stephens blasted a three-run homer in the second inning and the Zookeepers beat the Forest City Owls 7-5. Boris had an RBI double and Lucas singled in a run. Ben Shepherd pitched five scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Carlos Gomez hurled a pair of hitless innings with three strikeouts and earned a save.
Pro Baseball
■ Brooks Brannon, the former Randleman star, was hitting .307 with 7 home runs and 24 RBIs in games played through May 29 for Boston’s AA affiliate in Portland, including back-to-back games of two hits and two RBIs.
Volleyball
■ Southwestern Randolph’s Bailey Blackmon committed to Brevard.
Football
■ Trinity’s Kha’Dn Fuller committed to Guilford College.
