LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Snotherly, High Point fall in first round of NCAA Tournament

Franklinville native and Eastern Randolph graduate Brecken Snotherly played in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday. She started for No. 15 seed High Point University against No. 2 Vanderbilt in a game played in Nashville, TN. 

Vandy bolted to an 18-2 start and 30-13 first quarter en route to a 102-61 romp. Snotherly played 14 minutes, including most of the 10-minute first quarter, and finished with two points on 1-of-2 shooting, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 fouls and 0 turnovers.

Snotherly, a junior who played her first two years at East Tennessee State, and HPU finished the year at 27-6.

Closer to home, spring season was as heavy as ever. Here are many highlights from last week’s action.

Baseball 

■ John Kirkpatrick and Jake Riddle combined on a four-hitter in Randleman’s 2-0 win over Southeast Alamance. Kirkpatrick allowed three hits and struck out seven in four innings. Riddle finished with seven strikeouts in three innings. Tate Andrews and Riddle both had two hits. Jackson Hill and Gavin Vanover had RBI singles.

■ Hunter Goddard had a run-scoring single in Wheatmore’s 12-2 loss to Bishop McGuinness.

■ Greyson Atkinson had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs in Wheatmore’s 10-9 loss to Thomasville. Bentley Mills had a single, double and an RBI. Grayson Stewart had a double.

■ Nolan Shaw had two doubles and four RBIs as Asheboro overwhelmed Eastern Guilford 20-0. Reid Suddeth had a two-run single. Daniel Jaimes doubled in a run while Price Kidd and Gavin Allen had RBI singles. Suddeth pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven in the three-inning game.

■ Brady Armfield blasted a three-run homer in Southwestern Randolph’s 13-3 rout of Chatham Charter. Armfield wound up with three hits and six RBIs. Logan Weidman had three hits, including a double. Elijah Sykes had two hits and two RBIs. Laken Elberson had two hits and an RBI. Lucas Connor had two hits, including a double. Matthew Blankenship allowed four hits and struck out five in six innings.

■ Jake Hunter pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and smacked a three-run double as Uwharrie Charter walloped North Moore 13-0. Brody Engle had three RBIs.

■ Cameron Hill tossed a six-hitter with four strikeouts in Trinity’s 8-0 win over Southern Guilford. Peyton Williams and Indiana Hill both had two hits and an RBI. Nick Soles drove in two runs.

■ Caden Waugh, Grant Underwood and Jacob Flinchum all had two hits and an RBI as Providence Grove edged East Surry 3-2. Chase Collins allowed two hits and an unearned run with seven strikeouts in five innings. Bryson Arrington pitched the final two innings and earned a save.

■ Jaimes had two hits and three RBIs in Asheboro’s 8-3 win over Northern Guilford. Grayson Norman had three hits while Shaw had two doubles. Kidd pitched 6 1/3 innings and Sam Gore got the last two outs.

■ Armfield had a two-run single in Southwestern Randolph’s 6-4 win over Eastern Randolph. Carson Williams had two hits and an RBI. Sykes had two hits. Weidman allowed two runs and seven hits with nine strikeouts in five innings.

■ Colin Duvall had two doubles and three RBIs as Providence Grove pounded West Davidson 13-2. Conner Haithcock had two hits and two RBIs. Trevor Kirkman was the winning pitcher.

■ Lincoln Coble pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts in Trinity’s 10-0, six-inning win over East Davidson. Brody Little had a pair of doubles.

■ Wilson Boswell had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs in Uwharrie Charter’s 11-0 rout of North Moore. Jaxon Mabe had three hits, including a double, and an RBI while also pitching the last two innings with three strikeouts. Keaton Hill had two hits and pitched five innings with six strikeouts.

■ Williams threw a three-hitter with four strikeouts while collecting two doubles at the plate as Trinity blanked East Davidson 11-0. Little homered and doubled. Cohen Wolfe had a pair of doubles. 

■ Shaw had two hits in Asheboro’s 7-0 loss to Northern Guilford.

■ Kyle Dillow had a single, double and three RBIs as Randleman overwhelmed Lexington 24-0 in three innings. Kirkpatrick had two doubles and two RBIs. Easton Campbell struck out five in two innings. Dillow pitched a scoreless inning.

■ Christian Tuttle had a hit and two RBIs in Wheatmore’s 12-3 win over Thomasville. The Warriors only had two hits but took advantage of 13 walks. Atkinson pitched a five-hitter with four strikeouts.

■ Andrew Thomas had a single, double and two RBIs as Providence Grove rallied for a 7-6 win over West Davidson. Grant Underwood belted a three-run homer and Haithcock doubled in a run. Duvall pitched one inning of relief for the win.

■ Bryson Marley had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs in Eastern Randolph’s 9-4 win over Southwestern Randolph. Isaiah Batchelor and Landon Albright both had two hits and two RBIs. Cade McCallum pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs.

Armfield homered and doubled for Southwestern Randolph. Lucas Connor and Sykes both had two hits. Grant Kirk had a triple.

Softball 

■ Callie Lambert had two hits and two RBIs but Providence Grove fell 10-9 to Chatham Central in nine innings. Carly Lambert had a single, double and an RBI. Rudy Caudle had two doubles and an RBI.

■ Makenna Lawrence got two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs as Wheatmore downed Southwest Guilford 8-2. Brooklyn Boles had two hits and two RBIs. Emma Gower also had two hits. Adalyn Boles pitched a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts while getting a single and double.

■ Kaylie St. John smashed a two-run homer in Randleman’s 4-3 win over High Point Christian. Addyson Dees added a two-run double. Olivia Ashby had two hits. Kinzie Ivey pitched a six-hitter, allowing two earned runs with nine strikeouts.

■ Cora Little had a single, double and an RBI in Asheboro’s 17-2 loss to Northern Guilford.

■ Wheatmore swept Thomasville 16-0 and 17-0 in a doubleheader. Kenzie Hege and Lawrence both had three RBIs in the second game. Lylah Gower had two hits and two RBIs.

■ Lilah Covington homered, doubled and had two RBIs in Randleman’s 11-1 win over Montgomery Central. Teanna Bostick had two hits and two RBIs. Kadie Green and Elsie Price both had two hits and an RBI. Dees struck out nine in six innings.

■ Alyssa Harris hurled a shutout with 10 strikeouts as Southwestern Randolph beat Reagan 3-0. Nauttica Parrish had two hits and three stolen bases. Maddie Strider also had three stolen bases.

■ Chloe Eudy hurled a five-hitter, smashed a two-run homer and hit a double in Southwestern Randolph’s 12-0 win over Eastern Randolph. Strider had two hits, including a triple, and three RBIs. Bristol Marine had two hits and two RBIs. Jada Freeland had two hits and an RBI. Parrish had three hits. 

Amanda Crabtree had a double for Eastern Randolph.

■ Campbell Ziemba had a two-run double in Providence Grove’s 5-3 loss to West Davidson. 

■ Harris and Parrish both had two hits in Southwestern Randolph’s 16-0 win over Eastern Randolph. Maylee Strider and Katelyn West combined for the shutout.

■ Lara Wiseman was 3-for-3 with a double and five RBIs as Providence Grove romped to a 16-0 win over Trinity. Ziemba had two hits and four RBIs. Callie Lambert had two hits and two RBIs. Addie Johnson had three RBIs. Ziemba and Wiseman combined for the three-inning perfect game.

■ Tori Dixon had a double and five RBIs in Uwharrie Charter’s 20-6 win over North Moore. Mylee Friedberg pitched a complete game.

Girls Soccer 

■ Rylee Stover had a huge night with five goals as Providence Grove blanked Eastern Randolph 6-0. Natalie Hernandez got the other goal and Sarah Hendricks had an assist.

■ Kinsley Davis made 14 saves in Wheatmore’s 7-0 loss to Bishop McGuinness.

■ Jaira Arellano scored three goals and had three assists in Asheboro’s 8-1 romp over East Davidson. Penny Smith, Chloe Chanmaly, Kimrey Watts, Gigi Flores and Annissa Goldston got the other goals. Abeni Hernandez, Angelica Hernandez, Emely Tejeda and Flores all had one assist.

■ Arlet Puente-Garza and Stover scored the goals in Providence Grove’s 2-1 win over Southeast Guilford. Alyssa Mesmer made four saves.

■ Jocelyn McDowell scored three goals and Nora Partin had one as Wheatmore beat Montgomery Central 4-0. Emmie Mesmer had three assists and Meredith Partin had one. Davis made four saves.

■ Watts and Arellano each scored two goals in Asheboro’s 6-0 win over Central Davidson. Goldston and Flores both got one goal. Arellano had two assists.

■ Stover scored three goals in Providence Grove’s 5-0 win over Central Davidson. Hayley Banks and Hernandez got the other goals. Stover, Banks and Hernandez had assists. Alyssa Mesmer made one save.

Boys Golf 

■ Uwharrie Charter tied with North Moore in a Four Rivers Conference match at The Golf Club at Chapel Ridge. Blake Pennington led the Eagles with a 38 while Jaxon Gallimore and Andrew Stover shot 40.

Eastern Randolph had the two lowest scorers as Tyler Gee shot 35 for medalist honors and Emmitt Frye had a 37. Southwestern Randolph’s Levi Dalke and Dylan Sheffer both shot 41.

■ Jackson Lawver shot 43 in Providence Grove’s 172-183 loss to Chatham Central at Siler City Country Club.

■ Brayden Davis shot 36 as Asheboro finished second to South Stokes in a five-team match at Lynrock Golf Club. Aiden Stamper and Lee Hooker both shot 41. 

■ Hooker shot 40 and Davis shot 41 as Asheboro (173) beat Randleman (179), North Davidson (187) and College Prep and Leadership Academy (226) at Asheboro Municipal. Randleman’s Kaden Beasley shot 41 and Landon Cook had a 44.

■ Gee was the medalist with a 36 as Eastern Randolph finished second to Southeast Guilford in a three-team match at Siler City Country Club. Frye was second with a 38.

■ Frye was second with a 38 and Gee took fourth with a 43 in Eastern Randolph’s match with Chatham Central and Chatham Charter at Siler City Country Club. Chatham Central won.

Boys Tennis 

■ Silas Jessup, Matthew Davis and Paul Ervin won in singles as Wheatmore edged Cornerstone Charter 5-4. The doubles teams of Avery Plummer/Davis and Jessup/Ervin won.

■ Jessup, Plummer, Ervin and Michael McNamara won in singles as Wheatmore slipped by West Davidson 5-4. The doubles team of Jessup/Ervin won.

■ Carson Jones, Micah Oates, Sam Peters, Caleb Ward, Kelton Shoptaw and Lawver swept the singles as Providence Grove beat East Davidson 9-0. The teams of Lawver/Jones, Oates/Ward and Peters/Shoptaw won.

Boys Volleyball 

■ Josh Prochnau had 8 kills, 5 blocks and 5 aces in Asheboro’s 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-19, 25-22) win over Jordan-Matthews. William Hernandez Miranda had 5 kills and 5 digs. Thomas Vasquez had 4 kills, 6 digs and 3 aces. Ryan Vasquez Santos had 20 assists and 3 aces.

Boys Track & Field 

■ Asheboro won its Get Your Marks Invitational with 174.5 points, followed by Wheatmore (128), North Rowan (76), Eno River Academy (75), Glenn (60.5), Randleman (29), Southwestern Randolph (21), Eastern Randolph (18), Thomasville (16) and Union Pines (9).

Winners for Asheboro were Michael Mark (300-meter hurdles), the 4x100 relay (Elijah Ingram, Caden Kutschenko, Jaydon Spruill, Tasha Timmons), Aaron Tyson (high jump, pole vault, triple jump), Kutschenko (long jump) and Juan Pablo Munoz (discus).

Winners for Wheatmore were the 4x800 relay (Ayden Fitzgerald, Ryan Mabe, Landon Weeks, Daylan Rada), Mabe (1600 meters) and Fitzgerald (3200 meters).

Winning for Randleman was Izaiah Troxler (shot put).

■ Randleman was fourth in a four-team match at Lexington.

Winning for the Tigers were Jackson Routh (110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles), the 4x200 relay, Bryson Nall (400 meters), Matthew Bowman (pole vault), Jazai Cassady) and Troxler (shot put).

■ Southwestern Randolph was third in a three-team match at South Davidson. Winning for the Cougars were Kaiden Mabe (400 meters), Andrew Ormond (3200 meters), the 4x100 relay and the 4x400 relay.

■ Asheboro won a three-team TAAC meet. Winning for the Blue Comets were Mark (110-meter hurdles), Jacob Leveille (1600 meters, 3200 meters), Ingram (300-meter hurdles), Tyson (high jump, pole vault, triple jump), Boone Hinesley (shot put) and Munoz (discus). 

Girls Track & Field 

■ Asheboro won its Get Your Marks Invitational with 151 points, followed by Wheatmore (91), North Rowan (61.5), Eno River (42), Southwestern Randolph (29), Union Pines (28), Eastern Randolph (24), Northeast Guilford (16), Eastern Guilford (14.5), Glenn (10) and Thomasville (4).

Winners for Asheboro were Nyla Price (100-meter hurdles), Jalaya Showers (100-meter dash, 200-meters), the 4x100 relay (Cadene Waters, Showers, Price, Anissa Goldston), Goldston (400 meters) and Jamaria Fonville (high jump).

Winners for Wheatmore were Hannah Phillips (3200 meters) and Kylyn Surratt (triple jump).

Winning for Eastern Randolph was Miranna Corea (shot put, discus).

■ Randleman was second in a four-team match at Lexington.

Winning for the Tigers were Reagan Henley (1600 meters, 800 meters) and Alexis Vaughn (discus, shot put).

■ Southwestern Randolph was third in a three-team match at South Davidson. Winning for the Cougars were Rhylea Maness (100-meter dash, triple jump) and the 4x100 relay.

■ Asheboro won a three-team TAAC meet. Winning for the Blue Comets were Price (100-meter hurdles, triple jump), Showers (100-meter dash, 200 meters, long jump), Tiphaine Amberny (800 meters) and Sarah Reeder (pole vault).

Boys Basketball 

■ Asheboro’s Jewel Barrett-Riggins and Nirey White were named to the all-TAAC team.

■ Randleman’s Connor Cassidy was named to the all-PAC team.

■ Uwharrie Charter’s Jaxon Mabe and Justyce Lawson were named to the all-Four Rivers Conference team. 

Also making the all-FRC team were Southwestern Randolph’s Kenan Sugg and Levi Dalke and Eastern Randolph’s Tyler Gee.

Girls Basketball 

■ Asheboro’s Maliyah Brady and Ady Scherer were named to the all-TAAC team and the Blue Comets’ Wes Luther was named Coach of the Year.

■ Randleman’s Jacquline McDaniel and Kadie Green were named to the all-PAC team.

■ Southwestern Randolph’s Jordin George was named Player of the Year in the Four Rivers Conference. Joining her from the Cougars on the all-FRC team were Nauttica Parrish and Maddie Strider.

Also making the all-FRC team were Uwharrie Charter’s Lainey Thomas, Navaeh Staples and Naimah Al-Arif and Eastern Randolph’s Callie Craven.
