Most local basketball teams were eliminated in the first two rounds of play of state tournament play. But as some seasons were ending, teams in baseball, softball, soccer, golf and track were just getting started. Here’s a recap of some highlights from last week.
Boys Basketball
■ Will Dabbs scored 19 points as No. 9 Providence Grove beat No. 24 West Caldwell 58-50 in the first round of the 3-A state playoffs. Andrew Thomas added 11 points and Gabe McKoy had 10.
■ Kareem Helms led three players in double figures with 17 points as No. 11 Uwharrie Charter held off No. 22 Graham 57-53 in the first round of the 4-A state playoffs. Jaxon Mabe scored 15 points and Corey Cole had 11.
■ Connor Cassidy, who recently went over 1,000 points for his career, led the way with 23 points in No. 9 Randleman’s 76-35 rout of No. 24 North Johnston in the first round of the 4-A state playoffs. Nazir Staton scored 12 points and Pacey Wagner had 10.
■ Justyce Lawson made seven 3-pointers and finished with 23 points in No. 11 Uwharrie Charter’s 56-43 loss to No. 6 SouthWest Edgecombe in the second round of the 4-A state playoffs. Helms had nine points.
Girls Basketball
■ Bailee Mitchell scored 26 points as No. 13 Providence Grove downed No. 20 Eastern Randolph 67-50 in the first round of the 3-A state playoffs. Laurel Bernhardt scored 21 points and Adi Johnson had 16.
Raegan Beaver led Eastern Randolph with 17 points. Callie Craven had 15 points and Katelyn Brown added 10.
■ Nauttica Parrish led four players in double figures with 19 points in No. 9 Southwestern Randolph’s 64-38 thumping of No. 24 Jordan-Matthews. Jordin George scored 16 points while Callie Harrison had 11 and Maddie Strider 10.
■ Madison Hill scored 15 points as No. 21 Trinity concluded its season with a 65-34 loss to No. 12 Shelby in the first round of the 3-A state playoffs.
■ Lainey Thomas and Navaeh Staples both scored 10 points in No. 10 Uwharrie Charter’s 54-23 rout of No. 23 Southwest Onslow in the first round of the 4-A state playoffs.
■ Kadie Green scored 23 points as No. 13 Randleman pounded No. 20 Carrboro 65-43 in the first round of the 4-A state playoffs. Jacquline McDaniel and Aislyn Laughlin each had 12 points.
■ Ady Scherer scored 13 points in No. 15 Asheboro’s 55-45 loss to No. 18 Piedmont in the first round of the 6-A state playoffs. Laneane Scherer had 12 points and Tiphaine Amberny had 8.
■ Kaelyn Whiteheart scored 26 points and went over 1,000 for her career as No. 7 Wheatmore beat No. 10 Lincolnton 59-49 in the second round of the 3-A state playoffs. Madeline Mullinax had 9 points.
■ George scored 14 points and Parrish had 10 in No. 9 Southwestern Randolph’s 44-37 loss to No. 8 East Duplin in the sec-ond round of the 4-A state playoffs.
■ Staples scored 21 points in Uwharrie Charter’s 44-37 win over North Johnston in the second round of the 4-A state playoffs. Naimah Al-Arif added eight points.
■ Thomas scored 18 points, Staples 17 and Johnson 11 in UCA’s 71-60 loss to No. 2 seed First Flight on Saturday in the third round of the 4-A state playoffs. The Eagles girls ended the season with a 21-7 record.
Boys Golf
■ Asheboro won a four-team match with Eastern Randolph, Bishop McGuinness and Southwestern Randolph. The Blue Comets’ Brayden Davis shot 41, good enough for second overall and William Tucker shot 42.
Tyler Gee of Eastern Randolph had a 43.
Baseball
■ Lincoln Coble pitched a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and only one walk in Trinity’s 1-0 win over Southeast Alamance. Nick Soles had two hits and scored the only run on a sacrifice bunt by Peyton Williams.
■ Wilson Boswell homered, singled and drove in four runs as Uwharrie Charter belted Cornerstone 11-0. Keaton Hill was the winning pitcher and had three RBIs.
■ Hunter Goddard had two hits in Wheatmore’s 11-1 loss to Walkertown.
■ Price Kidd pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts while Nolan Shaw pounded a pair of triples as Asheboro beat East Davidson 8-2. Shane Immel added a double and triple. Sam Gore had two hits, including a double. Justin Guerrero and Gabriel Jaimes each had two hits. Grayson Norman and Daniel Jaimes each had a two-run single.
■ Cade McCallum had a hit and scored a run in Eastern Randolph’s 11-1 loss to West Davidson.
■ Jackson Hill had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs as Randleman beat Northern Guilford 7-1 at Truist Point, home of the High Point Rockers. Carter Heath drove in a run. Jake Riddle pitched a two-hitter over five innings with six strikeouts. Tate Andrews went the final two innings, allowing a run and two hits.
■ Norman’s three-run triple highlighted Asheboro’s 7-3 win over Trinity. Guerrero had two hits and Gavin Allen scattered 9 hits in a complete game win.
Williams went 2-for-3 for Trinity. Soles had two hits.
Softball
■ Kadie Green had a single and double in Randleman’s 10-0 win over Uwharrie Charter. Olivia Ashby also had two hits. Kaylee Phillips had a hit and four RBIs. Elsie Prince had a hit and two RBIs. Addyson Dees doubled in a run and pitched a one-hitter. Kinzie Ivey and Kaylie St. John both had a hit and RBI.
Meghan Peters got the Uwharrie Charter hit.
■ Shelby Williams had the only hit, a double, in Eastern Randolph’s 10-0 loss to Southern Alamance.
■ Alyssa Harris blasted a two-run triple, Bristol Marine had a two-run double and Maylee Strider had a two-run single as Southwestern Randolph beat Oak Grove 6-4. Harris pitched two perfect innings of relief for the win.
■ Cora Little had a triple and three RBIs in each game as Asheboro swept Thomasville 19-1 and 18-1 in a doubleheader. Shellee Culler had a triple and three RBIs in the second game. Mykala Cook and Little each got a pitching win.
Boys Track & Field
■ Asheboro (205) won a five-team meet with Wheatmore (123), Randleman (63), Eastern Randolph (46) and Revolution Academy (37).
Winning for Asheboro were the 4x800 relay (Connor Rauch, Ellis Leroy, Xavier Roman, Bristoe Brown), Michael Mark (100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash), the 4x100 relay (Willie Sherrod, Dallas Brinton, Connor Brinton, Mark), and Juan Pablo Munoz (shot put, discus).
Winning for Randleman were Kayden Saunders (100-meter dash) and Bryson Nall (400 meters).
Winning for Wheatmore were Daylan Rada (1600 meters), Ryan Mabe (800 meters) and Tyler McCormick (3200 meters).
Winning for Eastern Randolph were Caden Revelle (high jump) and Caden Kutschenko (long jump, triple jump).
Girls Track & Field
■ Asheboro (208) won a five-team meet with Wheatmore (103), Revolution Academy (60), Eastern Randolph (32) and Randleman (32).
Winning for Asheboro were the 4x800 relay (Waverly Adams, Jane Albright, P. McConnaughey, Rebollar Cruz), Nyla Price (100-meter hurdles, 400 meters, triple jump), Jalaya Showers (100-meter dash, long jump), Abigail Dillard (300-meter hurdles) and Lia George (high jump).
Winning for Wheatmore were Scarlett Hildreth (1600 meters, 800 meters), Brooklyn Hittepole (200-meter dash) and Lydia Madison (3200 meters).
Winning for Eastern Randolph was Miranna Corea (shot put, discus).
Girls soccer
■ Kimrey Watts scored a three-goal hat trick as Asheboro blanked Randleman 5-0. Watts scored her first goal off a Gigi Flores assist with 45 seconds left in the first half to break a scoreless deadlock. She also scored on a header off a Flores cross. Jaira Arellano and Anson Frazier score the other goals. Penny Smith, Emely Joachim and Marlen Garcia had assists.
■ Rylee Stover and Layla Duggins scored the goals in Providence Grove’s 2-2 tie with Central Davidson. Stover had an assist.
■ Madison Hill, Ryanne Barrow, Bryn Holden, Lillian Stratton and Kinsley Phillips scored the goals as Trinity blanked South Davidson 5-0. Aya Guynn, Katelyn Hill and Madison Hill had assists.
