LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Summer baseball and spring awards

American Legion Baseball 

■ Chance Holdaway smashed a three-run homer and finished with three hits as Liberty beat Rowan County 7-5. Maddox Dunn also had three hits and three RBIs. Tyler Westbrooks smashed a solo home run while Cade McCallum and John Wittig both had two hits. McCallum allowed one earned run and four hits in five innings with one strikeout. Dunn worked the final two innings and earned a save.

■ Brady Armfield had two hits, including a two-run double, and four RBIs in Randolph County’s 16-3 romp over Wadesboro. Hudson Deel smashed a two-run homer while Ashton Poe had a two-run triple and scored on a double by Jake Riddle. Post 45 scored 12 runs in the first inning. Sean Jennison pitched the first three innings. Kyle Dillow hurled two hitless innings with four strikeouts.

■ Caleb Coggins delivered a walk-off single as Randolph County scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a come-from-behind 4-3 win over Liberty. Jackson Hill’s single drove in the tying run. Tate Andrews pitched three scoreless innings in relief to get the win. Poe was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Coggins was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Wittig was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Liberty. Dunn singled in a run and McCallum was 2-for-3.

■ Armfield went 4-for-5, including a three-run homer and double, and had six RBIs as Randolph County held off Mocksville Davie 9-7. Deel was 2-for-4 and Lucas Connor was 2-for-5. Sam Gore had an RBI single. Riddle allowed one earned run and struck out five in four innings. 

Prep Baseball 

■ Uwharrie Charter’s Jake Hunter was named Player of the Year in the Four Rivers Conference. The Eagles’ Jaxon Mabe, Ty McAuley, Keaton Hill and Wilson Boswell were named to the all-conference team. 

Southwestern Randolph’s Carson Coltrane, Logan Weidman, Lucas Connor, Elijah Sykes, Carson Williams and Armfield made the all-conference team.

Bryson Marley, Dunn and McCallum represented Eastern Randolph on the all-conference team.       

■ Providence Grove’s Andrew Thomas was named to the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association 3-A all-state team as were Trinity’s Lincoln Coble and Peyton Williams.

■ Randleman’s Jake Riddle, Jackson Hill and John Kirkpatrick were named to the NCBCA 4-A all-state team. Uwharrie Charter’s Jake Hunter and Jaxon Mabe and SWR’s Brady Armfield were all-state selections as well.

■ Southwestern Randolph’s Carson Coltrane, Elijah Sykes, Lucas Connor, Carson Williams, Grant Kirk snd Logan Weidman were named to the All-Region team. Joining them were UCA’s Keaton Hill and Ty McCauley, Randleman’s Tate Andrews and Nick Soles, and Brody Little from Trinity.

■ Asheboro’s Price Kidd was co-Pitcher of the Year in the TAAC and Jamey May was Coach of the Year. Reid Sudduth, Shane Immel, Sam Gore and Daniel Jaimes also made the all-conference team.

College Baseball 

■n Former Randleman star Hunter Atkins got a walk-off single to complete a 5-for-5 day with his sixth home run of the season and five RBIs as Catawba beat Point Loma 10-9 in the NCAA Division II national championship tournament. Former Uwharrie Charter standout Colt Wilkins struck out a Point Loma batter to end the top of the ninth inning and was the winning pitcher.

Atkins was 3-for-6 with two RBIs in the Indians’ 15-8 win over Bentley in a previous elimination game. 

The Indians fell 17-2 to defending national champion Tampa, ending their season. Atkins was 2-for-4.

ZooKeepers Baseball 

■ Cameron Austin had an RBI single and Daniel Stephens drove in a run as the Zookeepers beat Holly Springs 6-4 despite only getting two hits. The Zookeepers took advantage of 10 walks and four batters hit by pitch. Kyle Rudolph pitched four innings, allowing two hits and a run while striking out five. Mark Salicco, Carlos Gomez and Ian Anderson had scoreless relief appearances, with Anderson getting the save.

■ Brady McGuire was 4-for-5 with a double and four RBIs as the Zookeepers swamped Boone 15-3. Josh Martinez went 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Sylas Boris was 4-for-5 with a double and RBI. Stephens went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Tyler Stillson pitched four innings, allowing three hits and two runs. Former Randleman star Braxton Walker pitched a scoreless seventh inning with one strikeout.

■ Reggie Sharpe went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs as the Zookeepers rallied for an 8-7 win over Martinsville. McGuire had two RBIs and Stephens had an RBI single. Anderson pitched two scoreless innings to get the win. Gomez pitched a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts to earn his third save for the season.

■ Austin was 3-for-5 with two doubles and five RBIs in the Zookeepers’ 19-9 rout of Forest City in seven innings. Will Oates went 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Stephens was 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs. Boris was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Chazz Grossington had a hit and two RBIs. Walker hurled a scoreless inning.

Softball 

■ Kami Dunn of 4-A state champion Southwestern Randolph was named Player of the Year in the Four Rivers Conference while the Cougars’ Alyssa Harris was Pitcher of the Year and Toby Strider was Coach of the Year.

Nauttica Parrish, Bristol Marine, Jada Freeland, Kaitlyn West, Maddie Strider and Chloe Eudy were all-FRC selections from the Cougars.

Uwharrie Charter’s Aubrie Kaufman, Tori Dixon and Emory Johnson were all-FRC as was Eastern Randolph’s Hailey Ritter.

■ Asheboro’s Cora Little and Shellee Culler made the all-TAAC team.

Boys Tennis 

■ Wheatmore’s Silas Jessup was Player of the Year in the Central Carolina Conference, his 3rd year in a row as a conference player of the year. He didn’t lose a set in conference this season and has never lost a conference singles match.

■ Southwestern Randolph’s Braydon Tyl was Player of the Year in the FRC and the Cougars’ Stephen Owen was Coach of the Year.

■ Asheboro’s Josh Prochnau, Brady Howell, Liam Lambert and Elliott Nall were all-TAAC selections.

Boys Golf 

■ Eastern Randolph’s Tyler Gee was Player of the Year in the FRC and the Wildcats’ Danny Burgess was Coach of the Year. Emmitt Frye was all-FRC for Eastern Randolph.

Southwestern Randolph’s Levi Dalke and Caleb Abernethy were all-FRC as were Uwharrie Charter’s Andrew Stover and Coen Branson.

■ Asheboro’s Charlie Knott and Brayden Davis made the all-TAAC team.

Girls Soccer 

■ Uwharrie Charter’s Kensley York was Offensive Player of the Year in the FRC and the Eagles’ Destiny Fisher was Defensive Player of the Year.

Other players from UCA on the all-FRC team were Reese Craven, Avery Lowe, Megan Vang, Avriana Whitfield and Savanna Chriscoe.

Kayla Hernandez, Sarah Kluba and Odalys Garcia Cambron were all-FRC from Southwestern Randolph as was Eastern Randolph’s Maddie McDaniel.

■ Asheboro’s Jaira Arellano and Wheatmore’s Jocelyn McDowell were named to the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association All-State team.

Asheboro coach Emily Ramon was named Region 6 Coach of the Year. The Blue Comets’ Gigi Flores, Penny Smith and Kimrey Watts were 4-A/5-A/6-A all-region as was Randleman’s Kendall Fortson. 

Making the 1-A/2-A/3-A all-region team were Wheatmore’s Addelyn Hedrick, Emmie Messner, Meredith Partin, Nora Partin and McDowell; and Trinity’s Madison Hill, Kayla Neam and Olivia Nance. 

■ Asheboro’s Crystal Castaneda, Arellano, Watts, Smith and Flores made the all-TAAC team.

Girls Track & Field 

Eastern Randolph’s Mirianna Corea and Callie Craven were Field Event Athletes of the Year in the FRC while Southwestern Randolph’s Kiersten Littell was Runner of the Year.

Roxanne Davis also made all-FRC for Eastern Randolph.

Brennan Thomas, Naima Al-Arif, Ellie Bryant, Bryan Cordier, Jackson Re, Savanna Brown and Addison Brown were all-FRC from UCA.

■ Asheboro’s Jalaya Showers was Field Event Athlete of the Year and Sprinter of the Year while Vincent Cable was Coach of the Year in the Triad Area Athletic Conference. Also making the all-TAAC from Asheboro were Lia George, Christy Price, Nyla Price, Sarah Reeder and Trynitee Brady.

Boys Track & Field 

■ Southwestern Randolph’s Devon Jenkins, Leland Davis, Thomas Costello, Devonte Dukes, Emmitt Lewis, Kenan Sugg and Kaiden Mabe were named to the all-FRC team.

Eastern Randolph’s Caden Revelle and Gerald Little were all-FRC selections.

■ Asheboro’s Aaron Tyson was Field Athlete of the Year in the TAAC. Joining him on the all-TAAC team were Juan Pablo Munoz and Michael Mark.
