Southwestern Randolph began the defense of its 4-A soccer crown with a pair of romps despite losing 13 seniors off last year’s team and changing head coaches. Meanwhile, Asheboro got off to a hot start with a pair of shutouts in volleyball. Here are those and other highlights from the start of the high school sports season last week.
Boys Soccer
■ Yael Rebollar-Ortiz and Kevin Garcia each scored two goals as 4-A defending state champion Southwestern Randolph shut out Randleman 6-0 to open the 2026 season. Alejandro Jimenez and Griffin Hall each had one goal. Johan Perez-Domiguez, Anthony Sweet Castanda, Hall and Rebollar-Ortiz had assists. Troy Adkins made two saves and Hayden Morrow got one.
■ Holt Tyl, Rebollar-Ortiz and Garcia all scored two goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 9-2 win over Trinity. Gio Hernandez, David Leon and Hall scored one goal apiece. Jimenez had two assists. Emmanuel Rodriguez, William Gutierrez, Logan Wood, Hall, Leon and Rebollar-Ortiz all had one assist. Adkins and Morrow each made two saves.
■ Edyl Amaya scored the goal in Wheatmore’s 1-1 draw with North Carolina Leadership Academy. Trace Craddock made nine saves.
Volleyball
■ Adalyn Whitaker produced a double-double of 23 kills and 13 digs in Providence Grove’s 3-1 (26-28, 27-25, 25-12, 25-12) win over Chatham Charter. Kolbi Jo Lineberry had 8 kills and 8 digs. Cailyn York had 30 assists and Emma Wilson got 19 digs.
■ Avalynn Johnson had 42 assists in Trinity’s 3-1 (22-25, 27-25, 25-19, 25-14) win over McMichael. Hayli Cox had 17 kills and a pair of blocks. Mya Hooker had 14 kills and 2 blocks. Ari Pinkston had 10 kills and 5 blocks. Dakota Odell had 9 kills while Addison McCoy had 7.
■ Ady Scherer had 9 kills and 7 aces as Asheboro swept Wheatmore 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-20). Cora Little had 8 kills while Maliyah Brady and Roxanne Davis each added 5. Lydia Scearce had 7 aces and Kailey Brown had 6.
Addison Phillips had 4 kills and Arabella Grant got 4 aces for Wheatmore.
■ Scherer had 10 kills and 4 aces in Asheboro’s 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-16) sweep of Eastern Randolph. Davis had 7 kills while Brady got 6 kills and 3 blocks. Little had 6 kills and 3 aces. Madeline Hodges had 6 kills. Lydia Scearce had 5 aces and Lily Hunt had 11 digs. Brown had 34 assists.
■ Johnson had 19 assists and Odell pounded 8 kills as Trinity swept Mount Airy 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-17). McCoy added three kills.
Girls Tennis
■ Larson Kelly, Scarlet Kyle, Lexie Owen, Alyssa Hampton and Anna Hamilton won in singles as Southwestern Randolph beat Asheboro 7-2. The doubles teams of Kelly/Kyle and Hampton/Hamilton won in doubles.
Delaney Nall won a singles contest for Asheboro and the doubles team of Madalynn Adams/Anson Frazier won.
■ Tatum Wagner and Ava Botts won in singles in Wheatmore’s 7-2 loss to Ledford.
■ Makenna Lawrence, Ally Honeycutt, Leah Puckett, Botts and Wagner won in singles as Wheatmore beat Montgomery Central 6-3. The doubles team of Wagner/Puckett also won.
Coastal Plain League
■ The Wilmington Sharks won the Coastal Plain League’s Petitt Cup last week, defeating the Macon Bacon 2-1 in the best-of-3 championship series played on Aug. 8-10. The home team won each game. Macon took a 1-0 series lead with a 3-2 win in the first game. The next two games were played in Wilmington, the Sharks having the home field advantage because of a better overall season winning percentage despite finishing second in the East division while Macon won the West Division. The Sharks won a thriller in Game two 8-7 in 12 innings to knot the series, then romped to the title with an 11-0 shutout victory.
Brooks Brannon update
■ The former Randleman is batting .283 with 19 home runs and 59 RBIs for the Portland Sea Dogs, the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Brannon smashed his 19th home run on Aug. 11 against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.
