LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Tournaments wrap, league play takes stage

In basketball, in-county and out-of-county tournaments wrapped up action last week. This week, league play continues for a couple of leagues and begins in others, with a little over a month’s worth of action leading to conference and state tournaments. The early-season work was all about getting here. Meanwhile, wrestling, track and swimming continue to hone their athletes as well. Here’s a look back at abbreviated action from last week.

Boys Basketball 

■  Tyler Gee scored 32 points to go with 5 assists and 5 steals as Eastern Randolph swamped Ascend Academy 79-25 in the Yellow Jacket Christmas Classic at Lee County. Colton Godwin had 8 points and 4 assists. Emmitt Frye and A.J. McDonald each had seven points.

Gee was named to the all-tournament team.

■  Gee scored 12 points and Easton Garrett had 11 in Eastern Randolph’s 86-45 loss to host Lee County in the consolation bracket of the Yellow Jacket Christmas Classic.

■  Gee scored 30 points in Eastern Randolph’s 99-58 loss to Cary in the first round of the Yellow Jacket Christmas Classic at Lee County.

■  Will Dabbs and Cam Jones each scored 27 points as Providence Grove beat East Davidson 83-68 in the Panthers Christmas Classic at Ledford. Gabe McKoy added 11 points while Landon Hudson had 4 points and 11 rebounds.

■  Dabbs poured in 33 points and had 8 rebounds in Providence Grove’s 74-72 loss in overtime to West Davidson in the semifinals of the Panthers Christmas Classic. Andrew Thomas scored 15 points and McKoy had 11. Thomas also had 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Hudson had 4 points and 14 rebounds.

Boys Wrestling 

■  Randleman swept Jordan-Matthews (61-12) and North Carolina Leadership Academy (48-24) in a quad hosted by the Tigers. Alex Raymundo, Shane Stevens, David Pugh, Hunter Hall, Sami Bosan, Preston Morgan and Braxton Trotter were 2-0 for Randleman. Malick Swaim, Maxwell Reeser and Arthur Alcantara were 1-0. Lloy Bosan, Stephen Lake and Landon Hunter were 1-1.

Providence Grove split the quad, beating Jordan-Matthews (45-30) and falling (35-30) to North Carolina Leadership Academy. Jeremiah Duffy, Matthew Signor, Jeremiah Payne and Aiden Poplin were 2-0 for the Patriots. Caden Mercado and Tucker Coble were 1-0. Ayden Terwilliger, Skyler Henderson and Charles Villaggio were 1-1.

■  Trinity swept Burns (62-18) and Lincoln Charter (47-33) in a tri-match at Lincoln Charter.

Jeven Palmeri, Aiden Burkholder, Stephen Cross, Edgar Vasquez, Omega Edge, Haris Idrees, Anees Khan and Joseph Trahan were 2-0 for the Bulldogs. Hezekyah Matson was 1-0. Trent Walker and Grayson Carroll were 1-1.

Girls Wrestling 

■  Asheboro went 1-2 in the Women’s Dunbar Duals, defeating Apex (24-18) and losing to Cary (48-12) and Middle Creek (36-24).

Brianna Munoz was 2-0 while Briana Barrios was 1-0. Alaina Scherer, Elena Alvarez and Ganelli Trejo were 2-1. Isla Aguirra was 1-2.

Boys Swimming 

■  Wheatmore won a Central Carolina Conference meet with 58 points, followed by Randleman (56), East Davidson (25) and Providence Grove.

Winning for Wheatmore were William York (200-meter freestyle), Jaden Kilcullen (200-meter individual medley, 100-meter backstroke), Landon Weeks (100-meter freestyle), and the 400-meter freestyle relay (Weeks, Kilcullen, York, Alexis Vegas-Torres).

Winning for Randleman were the 200-meter medley relay (Gavin Morabito, Cannon Eggleston, Tyler Fortson, Skyler Poe), Fortson (50-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly), the 200-meter freestyle relay (Fortson, Morabito, Poe, Eggleston), and Eggleston (100-meter breaststroke).

Girls Swimming 

■  Wheatmore, with 68 points, finished second to East Davidson in a CCC meet. Randleman (39) was third and Providence Grove (11) was fourth.

Winning for Wheatmore were the 200-meter medley relay (Danielle Perry, Sophie Williamson, Jillian Wolfe, Kylyn Surratt), Williamson (200-meter individual medley) and Wolfe (100-meter freestyle, 100meter backstroke).

Winning for Randleman was Kendall Fortson (200-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly).
