Local Sports Roundup: Trinity's Avalynn Johnson tops 2,000 assists in volleyball

Another week, another milestone. This week, Trinity’s Avalynn Johnson topped the 2,000 assist mark for her career. Here’s a look at that and other highlights from the week.

Volleyball

■ Stella Brown pounded 9 kills and had 3 aces in Southwestern Randolph’s 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 26-24) sweep of Randleman. Bailey Blackmon contributed 7 kills and 5 blocks. Hailey Kennedy had 14 assists while Mary Kathryn Coltrane had 12 assists and 2 aces. Cheyenne Dixon, Sara-Kate Marion and Kennedie Welborn all had five kills.

Lexi Vaughn paced Randleman with 11 kills along with a pair of aces and a block. Lila Covington had 9 kills, a block and an ace. Karrington Jones had 5 kills and 2 blocks. Natalie Roach had 23 assists, 2 aces and a kill.

■ Roxanne Davis had 11 kills and 4 blocks in Eastern Randolph’ s 3-1 (26-28, 25-23, 25-15, 25-17) win over North Moore. Miranna Corea had 7 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces. Reagan Beaver had 26 digs, 5 kills and 2 blocks. Vivian Underwood had 26 digs and 2 aces. Katelyn Brown had 25 digs. Callie Craven had 31 assists and 12 digs.

■ Avalynn Johnson had 51 assists and 19 digs in Trinity’s 3-2 (20-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 16-4) loss to West Davidson. The Bulldogs’ setter went over 2,000 assists for her career. Avery Moffitt had 23 kills, 15 digs and 3 aces. Mya Hooker had 15 kills and 3 blocks. Hayli Cox had 13 kills, 3 blocks and 4 aces. Katelyn Hill had 9 kills and 3 aces. Charlee Phillips had 18 digs, 5 assists and 2 aces. Bryn Holden had 17 digs.

■ Caroline Way had 10 kills and 4 aces in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-16) sweep of Jordan-Matthews. Emory Johnson had 24 assists, 5 aces and 5 digs. Alyvia Spinks had 4 kills, 7 assists and 2 aces. Sadie Upchurch had 10 digs and 2 aces.

■ Way posted a double-double of 20 kills and 14 digs in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-17) sweep of Bishop McGuinness. Carly Rush also had a double-double of 13 kills and 15 digs. Emory Johnson had 31 assists, 8 digs, 3 kills and 2 aces. Upchurch had 22 digs and 3 assists. Nyasia Wharton provided eight kills.

■ Blackmon had 16 kills and a pair of blocks in Southwestern Randolph’s 3-1 (25-27, 25-20, 25-12, 25-17) win over North Moore. Stella Brown had 10 kills, 12 digs and 5 aces. Kinlin Hulin had 9 kills, 6 blocks and 2 aces. Marion had nine kills while Coltrane had 14 assists and 4 aces. Kennedy had 31 assists, 10 digs and 3 aces. Welborn had 6 kills and 2 blocks. Madilyn Baker had 29 digs and 4 assists.

Way had 12 kills and 2 aces in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-0 (25-15, 25-9, 25-14) sweep of Northwood. Emory Johnson had 21 assists, 4 kills and 2 aces. Rush added seven kills. Megan Becker had 5 kills and Wharton had 4. Upchurch had 10 digs.

■ Emma Kate Forester had 9 kills and 7 aces in Asheboro’s 3-0 (25-10, 25-4, 25-5) sweep of Southern Guilford. Lia George had six kills. Emma Ingold had 15 aces and 9 digs. Eva Vuncannon had 15 assists and 13 aces. Emma Little had 14 digs and 2 aces. Haley Macon had three aces.

Soccer

■ Chris Betancourt and Fernando Hernandez scored the goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 2-1 win over Jordan-Matthews. Yael Rebollar-Ortiz had an assist and Jonathan Perez-Dominguez made four saves.

■ Seth Johnson scored all three goals as Providence Grove edged Wheatmore 3-2. Saul Cortes, Kevin Bautista and Moises Medina got the assists. Aldo Rubio made six saves.

Carter Queen and Laurel Ortiz Suarez tallied the Wheatmore goals. Logan Hughes made 14 saves and had an assist.

■ Ozmar Martinez and Carlos Gonzalez both scored two goals in Asheboro’s 10-1 rout of Northeast Guilford. Seongyun Kim, Henry Martinez Cruz, Ethan Muro, Alexander Diaz, Zamire Bush and Ivan Castaneda all had one goal. Jonathan Ortega, Martinez and Martinez Cruz all had two assists. Anrahan Cabral, Bush, Castaneda and Gonzalez all had one assist. 

■ Axel Rincon and Alex Raymundo scored the goals as Randleman edged High Point Central 2-1. Avner Francisco and Erick Delgado had the assists while Dilan Chavez made four saves.

■ Hernandez scored two goals and Gio Hernandez and Betancourt each tallied one in Southwestern Randolph’s 4-0 victory over Northwood. Jaxon Lee had two assists. Braydon Tyl and Noah Freeman both had an assist. Perez-Dominguez made four saves.

■ Eric Gonzalez scored the goal in Providence Grove’s 1-1 tie with Thomasville. Rubio was credited with 17 saves.

■ Hughes made 20 saves in Wheatmore’s 4-0 loss to Trinity.

■ Gonzalez scored three goals as Asheboro drubbed Southern Guilford 9-0. William Miranda, Noah Rebollar, Cabral, Martinez, Martinez Cruz and Castaneda all had one goal. Gonzalez and Martinez both had two assists. Samuel Paul, Juan Macias, Ortega, Castaneda and Martinez Cruz all had one assist. 

Girls Golf

■ Megan Oakley shot 78 to win medalist honors by a wide margin and led her Providence Grove team to a runaway win in the Central Carolina Conference tournament at Colonial Country Club.

■ Oakley was the medalist with a 37 as Providence Grove beat Rockingham County and Asheboro at Asheboro Municipal. Adison Johnson shot 47 for the Patriots.

■ Southwestern Randolph’s Danielle Jaeck and Lucy York shared medalist honors at 46 as the Cougars won a five-team match at Siler City Country Club.

Boys Cross Country

■ Wheatmore’s Ryan Mabe won overall and the Warriors beat Providence Grove and Southwestern Randolph.

Completing the top five were Andrew Ormond (Southwestern Randolph), Daylan Rada (Wheatmore), Keegan Shoptaw (Providence Grove) and Fletcher Stratton (Trinity).

■ Uwharrie Charter was third in a five-team meet at North Moore. Ryan Lor was the Eagles’ top finisher, placing seventh.

■ Randleman’s Jedidiah Dake was third overall in a three-team meet with Central Davidson and Montgomery Central. The Tigers were third as a team.

Girls Cross Country

■ Providence Grove’s Laurel Bernhardt won the race by four seconds and led the Patriots to a win over Trinity and Southwestern Randolph.

Rounding out the top five finishers were Scarlet Hildreth (Wheatmore), Bailee Mitchell (Providence Grove), Lyndsay Browder (Providence Grove) and Reese Star (Sheets Memorial Christian).

■ Uwharrie Charter beat Friar Vincent Capodanno on a tiebreaker in a three-way meet with North Moore. The Eagles’ top finisher was Gracilyn Elliott, who was fifth.

■ Reagan Henley won and Randleman had four of the top five runners in a victory over Montgomery Central and Central Davidson.

The Tigers’ Emma Herring was third, Anamaria Ruiz was fourth and Kendall Fortson was fifth.
