LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Two football games postponed; Wheatmore falls to South Davidson

Two in-county rivalry football games — Asheboro at Randleman and Southwestern Randolph at Providence Grove — were postponed on Friday because of power outages in their areas and rescheduled for Monday, Sept. 7, too late to get the results in this edition. But here are some highlights from other key outings from last week.

Football

■ Juju Banks ran for a touchdown and Noah Wyrick scored after taking a lateral from Banks in a 27-21 loss to South Davidson. Gavin McPherson intercepted a pass and Connor Benton recovered a fumble for the Warriors.

■ Eastern Randolph fell to Union Pines for the second year in a row, this time at home, 16-6.

■ Trinity ran into a buzzsaw in a 35-0 loss to South Rowan.

Volleyball

■ Sara-Kate Marion pounded 13 kills while Cheyenne Dixon had 12 kills and 26 digs as Southwestern Randolph swept West Stanly 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-21). Kaylea Beck had a career-high 11 kills. Calli Mooneyham and Makayla Aaron both had 10 digs. Mary Kathryn Coltrane had 34 assists.

■ Caroline Way had 15 kills, 5 digs and 2 blocks in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-0 sweep (25-10, 25-23, 25-17) of Asheboro. Carly Rush had a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs along with a block. Kenzie Cain had 12 digs.

Kam Leach had 7 kills, 4 aces and a block.

■ Dakota Odell had 12 kills and 3 blocks as Trinity outlasted Randleman 3-2 (20-25, 22-25, 30-28, 25-21, 15-9). Ari Pinkston had 8 kills and 7 blocks. Mya Hooker had 8 kills and 4 blocks. Hayli Cox had 7 kills and 6 blocks. Addison McCoy had 5 kills, 4 aces and a block.

■ Rush had 15 kills, 10 digs and a block in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-23, 25-20) of North Lincoln. Way had 13 kills, 8 digs and a block. Amya Brewer had four kills and a block. Aly Hussey had 4 kills, 9 digs and 5 aces. Cain had 17 digs while Leach had 4 kills and 3 blocks. 

■ Pinkston had a big game with 19 kills and 8 blocks as Trinity outlasted Central Davidson 3-2 (25-27, 25-17, 18-25, 25-16, 21-19). Odell added 17 kills and 3 blocks. Hooker had 11 kills and 5 blocks. Avalynn Johnson had 26 assists and Emma Nance had 20.

■ Beck and Marion had eight kills apiece in Southwestern Randolph’s 3-0 sweep (25-20, 26-14, 25-22) of Cornerstone Charter. Dixon had 7 kills, 12 digs and 4 aces. Payson Hammer and Kennedie Welborn each had six kills. Coltrane had 15 assists and Marijose Medina had 14.

■ Way had 16 kills, 7 blocks, 6 digs and 2 assists as Uwharrie Charter swept North Carolina Leadership Academy 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-4). Rush had 10 kills, 18 digs, 2 blocks and 2 assists. Alyvia Spinks had 32 assists, 2 blocks, a kill and an ace. Cain had 18 digs and 4 assists.

■ Karrington Jones had 13 kills and a pair of blocks in Randleman’s 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-10) sweep of Montgomery Central. Lilah Covington had 8 kills and 2 aces. Kaylee Phillips had 7 aces and 12 digs. Olivia Ashby had 16 digs. Kenzie Vaughn had 23 assists and Jolee McKinney added 14.

■ McCoy had 9 kills and 4 aces as Trinity walloped Southern Guilford 3-0 (25-7, 25-5, 25-6). Hooker had 8 kills while Pinkston had 7 kills and 2 blocks.

Boys Soccer

■ Alejandro Jimenez, Kevin Garcia, Griffin Hall, Gio Hernandez and Holt Tyl all scored two goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 10-1 win over Wheatmore. Garcia and Hernandez both had three assists. Manny Dominguez-Torres, Jimenez, Hall and Tyl all had one assist. Hayden Morrow made two saves and Troy Adkins had one.

Angel Castilla scored the Wheatmore goal and Grayson Carter got the assist. Trace Craddock made 10 saves.

■ Zamire Bush and Manuel Alarcon scored the goals as Asheboro edged Mooresville 2-1. Jonathan Ortega and Juan Macias had the assists. 

■ Iker Castro scored the goal in Uwharrie Charter’s 1-1 tie with Randleman. Connor Vaughn made 10 saves.

■ Jimenez scored two goals and Hall got the other as Southwestern Randolph blanked Cummings 3-0. Tyl had two assists and Jimenez had one. Morrow made five saves and Adkins had four.

■ Easton Dewitt scored the goal in Wheatmore’s 5-1 loss to North Carolina Leadership Academy. Emmitt Frazier made eight saves.

Girls Tennis

■ Larson Kelly, Scarlet Kyle, Lexi Owen, Alyssa Hampton, Lily Auman and Anna Hamilton swept the singles as Southwestern Randolph beat Uwharrie Charter 9-0. The teams of Kelly/Kyle, Owen/Hampton and Auman/Hamilton took the doubles.

■ Lauren Church, Emma Gower, Makenna Lawrence and Ava Botts won in singles as Wheatmore beat West Davidson 6-3. The teams of Church/Botts and Gower/Lawrence won in doubles.

■ The doubles team of Charlotte Smith/Delaney Nall won in Asheboro’s 8-1 loss to Northern Guilford.

Girls Golf

■ Providence Grove’s Adison Johnson tied for medalist honors with a 45 in a four-team match with North Stanly, Southeast Guilford and Asheboro at Holly Ridge Golf Links.

Asheboro’s Paige Kotlowski shot a 48.

Boys Cross Country

■ Randleman’s Shaylan Murrell was sixth overall in a four-team PAC meet held at Montgomery Central.

Girls Cross Country

■ Ellie Kesler, an eighth grader at Asheboro Hybrid, placed third in the Run at the Farm at Denton Farm Park. There were 14 teams and 114 runners in the event.

■ Randleman’s Laurel Bernhardt led the way by winning the overall title and the Tigers were victorious in a four-team PAC meet at Montgomery Central. The Tigers’ Reagan Henley was fourth.

Brooks Brannon update

■ The former Randleman star is batting .286 with a team-leading 21 home runs and a team-leading 66 RBIs for the Portland Sea Dogs, the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. Brannon got his latest home run on Sept. 3.
