LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Uwharrie Charter volleyball off to a strong start

The opening week of football grabbed most of the headlines, but lots of other athletes were making their own waves in other sports. Here’s a look at some of last week’s highlights.

Boys Soccer 

■ Easton Dewitt erupted for six goals and had two assists Wheatmore as routed Albemarle 9-0. Jake Edwards, Grayson Carter and Trace Craddock scored the other goals. Edyl Amaya had an assist. Emmett Frazier and Craddock each made one save.

■ Brian Bautista and Juan Macias scored the goals in Asheboro’s 2-0 victory over Wallace-Rose Hill in Wilmington. Sebastian Silva and Macias had the assists.

■ Milton Ramos and Manuel Alarcon scored the goals in Asheboro’s 3-2 loss to Piedmont. Jonathan Ortega and Benny Zentella had the assists.

■ Grayson Carter scored two goals and had an assist in Wheatmore’s 6-3 loss to Central Davidson. Dewitt scored the other goal. Craddock made seven saves and Frazier stopped five shots.

Volleyball 

■ Adalyn Whitaker had 18 kills in Providence Grove’s 3-0 (25-8, 25-2, 25-14) sweep of Jordan-Matthews. Kolbi Jo Lineberry added 8 kills and Oakley Quackenbush contributed 7. Cailyn York had 25 assists and Emma Wilson had 18 digs.

■ Carly Rush had 16 kills, 5 blocks, 5 digs and 2 aces as Uwharrie Charter swept South Rowan 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-17). Amya Brewer had 6 blocks and 2 kills. Kim Leach had 6 blocks and a single kill.

■ Cheyenne Dixon posted a double-double of 16 kills and 14 digs along with 3 aces in Southwestern Randolph’s 3-1 (25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18) win over Trinity. Payson Hammer had 9 kills and 5 blocks. Sara-Kate Marion had 9 kills while Mary Kathryn Coltrane had a double-double of 24 assists and 10 digs. Makayla Aaron had 12 digs. Kaylea Beck had 6 kills and 6 blocks. Kennedie Welborn had 6 kills and 2 blocks.

■ Maliyah Brady had 14 kills and 4 blocks as Asheboro outlasted Ledford 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 19-25, 25-14, 15-12). Ady Scherer had 12 kills, 11 digs and 8 aces. Roxanne Davis contributed 9 kills and 4 blocks. Kailey Brown had 48 assists and 7 aces. Cora Little had 10 digs and 6 aces. Lily Hunt added 20 digs.

■ Rush had 16 kills, 4 digs and 2 aces in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-17) sweep of Trinity. Caroline Way had 10 kills and 7 digs. Brewer contributed 7 kills and a pair of blocks. Leach had 2 kills, 3 blocks, 2 digs and 2 aces.

■ Emma Nance set the table with 38 assists as Trinity beat Central Davidson 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23). Hayli Cox had 14 kills and 4 blocks. Mya Hooker had 8 kills and 3 blocks. Ari Pinkston had 10 kills and 4 blocks. Addison McCoy had 9 kills and 10 digs. Bryn Holden had 11 digs.

Girls Tennis 

■ Larson Kelly, Lexi Owen and Lilly Stutts won in singles as Southwestern Randolph downed Trinity 6-3. The teams of Scarlet Kyle/Kelly, Alyssa Hampton/Owen and Anna Hamilton/Stutts swept the doubles.

■ Charlotte Smith, Madalynn Adams, Anson Frazier, Delaney Nall, Ghia Crandall and Haeli Page swept the singles as Asheboro rolled to a 9-0 win over Western Guilford. The teams of Adams/Frazier, Smith/Nall and Crandall/Page took the doubles.

■ Tatum Wagner, Leah Puckett, Lauren Church, Emma Gower, Makenna Lawrence and Ava Botts won in singles as Wheatmore beat Cornerstone Charter 8-1. The doubles teams of Anna Taylor/Haisley Doerie and Puckett/Church won in doubles.

■ Botts won a singles match in Wheatmore’s 7-1 loss to North Stanly.

■ Kelly, Kyle and Owen won in singles as Southwestern Randolph edged Wheatmore 5-4. The teams of Kelly/Kyle and Hampton/Owen won in doubles.

Cross Country 

■ Scarlett Hildreth finished fifth overall for the women and Ayden Fitzgerald was seventh overall for the men in the Bob Schilly Invitational at East Davidson.

■ Daylan Rada won and teammate Ayden Fitzgerald was second as host Wheatmore’s boys claimed a three-team meet. Asheboro Hybrid’s Josiah Kelly was third. Jake Hollingsworth was fourth and Southwestern Randolph’s Davis Miller was fifth.

In the girls’ meet, Hildreth was fourth overall but the Warriors didn’t have enough team members to accumulate points. Southwestern Randolph’s Riley Clapp was fifth. Forbush won the team title.

■ Providence Grove’s Bailee Mitchell won the overall title in the Patriots loss to Chatham Charter. In the boys’ race, the Patriots’ Keegan Shaw was second.

Girls Golf 

Asheboro’s Paige Kotlowski and Southwestern Randolph’s Danielle Jack each shot 47 to tie for fourth in a five-team tournament at Asheboro Municipal. Union Pines won the team title.

Brooks Brannon update 

■ The former Randleman star is batting .280 with 19 home runs and 61 RBIs for the Portland Sea Dogs, the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.
