LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Way honored for 1000th career kill

Uwharrie Charter’s Caroline Way reached a milestone last week when the senior recorded her 1,000th kill. That was a major highlight in another busy week of prep action. Here’s a look at more.

Boys Soccer 

■ Kevin Martinez Cruz and Zamire Bush scored the goals in Asheboro’s 2-1 win over Grimsley. Jonathan Ortega and Ivan Castaneda had the assists.

■ Grayson Carter scored two goals and Javon Balderas had one in Wheatmore’s 7-3 loss to Montgomery Central.

■ Gio Hernandez scored the goal and Kevin Garcia got the assist in Southwestern Randolph’s 5-1 loss to Western Alamance. Troy Adkins made nine saves.

Brooks Brannon update 

■ The former Randleman star is batting .280 with 22 home runs and 70 RBIs for the Portland (Maine) Sea Dogs, the Double-A affiliate with the Boston Red Sox. Brannon smashed his 22nd homer on Friday, Sept. 11, in an 8-4 win over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Brannon was selected by the Red Sox in the 2020 draft.

Volleyball 

■ Mya Hooker pounded 18 kills in Trinity’s 3-1 (25-20, 24-26, 25-18, 25-20) win over East Davidson. Ari Pinkston and Dakota Odell each had 11 kills. Addison McCoy had 9 kills, 4 aces and 2 blocks. Charlee Phillips had 16 digs and 3 aces. Cadence Mortensen had 13 digs and Avalynn Johnson had 25 assists. Emma Nance had 23 assists.

■ Adalyn Whitaker had 27 kills, 17 digs and 6 aces in Providence Grove’s 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-9) loss to West Davidson. Cailyn York had 35 assists and 5 aces. Kolbi Jo Lineberry had 11 kills, 22 digs and a pair of aces. Caroline Wilson had 3 blocks and 4 aces. Emma Wilson had 32 digs.

■ Cora Little had 3 kills, 3 aces and 2 blocks in Asheboro’s 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-15) loss to Northern Guilford. Maliyah Brady had 3 kills and 4 blocks. Roxanne Davis had 3 kills and 8 blocks. Kailey Brown had 15 assists and 2 aces. Emma Ingold had 10 digs.

n Cheyenne Dixon had 16 kills, 24 digs and 9 aces as Southwestern Randolph outlasted Uwharrie 3-2 (25-12, 23-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-13). Sara-Kate Marion had 13 kills while Kaylea Beck had 8 kills and 5 blocks. Payson Hammer had 8 kills and 2 blocks. Mary Katherine Coltrane had 35 assists and 7 digs.

■ Dixon had another big game with 22 kills, 27 digs and 2 aces as Southwestern Randolph rallied for a 3-2 (22-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-12) win over Asheboro. Marion had 14 kills, 10 digs and 5 aces. Kennedie Welborn had 8 kills and 2 blocks. Coltrane had 38 assists and Calli Mooneyham had 10 digs.

Ady Scherer led Asheboro with 18 kills and 4 blocks. Little had 14 kills, 5 aces and 2 blocks. Brady had 10 kills and 3 blocks. Davis had 9 kills and 2 blocks. Brown had 51 assists, 5 aces and 2 blocks. Ingold had 11 digs and 3 aces. Lydia Scearce had 3 aces and Lily Hunt had 21 digs.

■ Gracie McNeill had 13 kills and 3 aces in Eastern Randolph’s 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-23) sweep of Northwood. Kallie Chamberlain had 12 digs while Raegan Beaver had 11. Caroline Wilson had 3 blocks and 4 aces. Emma Wilson had 32 digs.

■ Caroline Way had 15 kills, giving her more than 1,000 for her career, as Uwharrie Charter swept Union Pines 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-17). Way also had 13 digs and 2 blocks. Kam Leach had 11 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces. Amya Brewer had 9 kills and 2 blocks. Makenzie Duty had 4 kills and 2 blocks.

■ Johnson had 30 assists, 3 kills and 3 aces as Trinity swept Providence Grove 3-0 (25-7, 25-21, 25-14). Hooker had 10 kills while Pinkston had 9 kills and 2 blocks. McCoy had 8 kills and 3 aces.

■ Dixon had 10 kills and 9 digs in Southwestern Randolph’s 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-11) sweep of Eastern Randolph. Welborn had 7 kills, 2 aces and a block. Coltrane had 18 assists, 4 digs and 3 aces.

■ Way had 15 kills and 5 digs in Uwharrie Charter’s 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-13) sweep of North Moore. Brewer had 7 kills while Leach had 6 kills, a block and an ace. Alyvia Spinks had 18 assists, 2 kills and an ace. Braelyn Green had 11 assists and 6 digs.

■ Little had 17 kills, 10 digs and 4 aces in a 3-2 (25-23, 14-25, 17-25, 25-23, 15-8) Asheboro loss to SE Guilford. Brady had 4 kills and 11 blocks. Hunt had 17 digs, Scearce 1. Brown had 35 assists.

Girls Golf 

■ Danielle Jaeck was second with a 52 and Southwestern Randolph placed second as a team in a Four Rivers Conference match at Siler City Country Club.

■ Jaeck shot a 53 and was third overall in a match involving full teams from Wheatmore and Union Pines.

■ Randeman’s Layla White was fourth with a 54 in a PAC match involving Central Davidson and Ledford at Oak Hollow.

■ Asheboro’s Paige Kotlowski shot 48 and finished third overall in a match with Southwest Guilford and Ragsdale at Grandover Resort.

■ Providence Grove’s Adison Johnson was the medalist with a 48 in a Central Carolina Conference match with East Davidson, West Davidson and Wheatmore at Sapona.

Girls Tennis 

■ Larson Kelly, Scarlet Kyle, Lexi Owen, Alyssa Hampton, Lily Auman and Anna Hamilton swept the singles as Southwestern Randolph blanked Jordan-Matthews 9-0. The teams of Kelly/Kyle, Owen/Hampton and Auman/Hamilton swept the doubles.

■ Tatum Wagner, Leah Puckett, Lauren Church, Emma Gower, Ava Botts and Makenna Lawrence made a clean sweep of the singles as Wheatmore blanked Providence Grove 9-0. The teams of Puckett/Church, Wagner/Botts and Ally Honeycutt/Rayden Barber swept the doubles.

■ Kelly, Kyle, Owen, Hampton, Auman and Hamilton swept to victory in Southwestern Randolph’s 6-0 win over Northwood.

■ Kelly, Kyle, Auman and Hamilton won in singles as Southwestern Randolph beat Northwood 7-2. The teams of Kelly/Kyle, Owen/Hampton and Auman/Hamilton swept the doubles.

Boys Cross Country 

■ Wheatmore’s Jake Hollingsworth was second overall and the Warriors beat Trinity 23-33 at Providence Grove. Trinity’s Tommy Smithers was the overall  winner and Providence Grove’s Liam White was third. Wheatmore’s Daylan Rada and Ayden Fitzgerald were fourth and fifth, respectively.

■ Davis Miller, Eli Graham and Aiden Edmonds scored points for SW Randolph in a meet with Montgomery Central.

Girls Cross Country 

■ Providence Grove’s Bailee Mitchell and Lyndsay Browder were 1-2 in the race as the Patriots beat Trinity 26-39. Trinity’s Ryanne Burrow, Madison Hill and Kayla Franklin were third, fourth and fifth.

■ Southwestern Randolph’s Genevieve Cranford was the overall winner in a meet with Montgomery Central in Troy. Emely Espinoza also scored points.
