LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: ZooKeepers cool some, but still in top spot

ZooKeepers Baseball 

■ Josh Martinez was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI in the ZooKeepers’ 8-4 loss to Holly Springs. Reggie Sharpe had a double and an RBI while Chazz Grossington hit a sacrifice fly.

■ Sylas Boris smashed two home runs and had five RBIs in the ZooKeepers’ 7-6 come-from-behind win over Martinsville. The second long ball, a two-run shot, came in the bottom of the eighth inning when the ZooKeepers were trailing 6-5. At one point, the ZooKeepers trailed 5-0. Brady McGuire was 2-for-4 and Jackson Hood had an RBI single. Joseph Yamamoto, Ian Anderson and Carlos Gomez all pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

■ Brady Schallmoser was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the ZooKeepers’ 7-4 loss to High Point-Thomasville. McGuire was 2-for-4, including a solo home run. Connor Christenson had an RBI double. 

■ Ben Shepherd pitched a two-hitter with three strikeouts and no walks over five innings as the ZooKeepers blanked Lexington County (SC) 10-0. Yamamoto finished with two hitless innings, striking out three. Ethan Walker went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs while Stephens smashed a solo home run, his fourth of the season, and had two RBIs. Josh Martinez had a two-run double. Wyatt Bush contributed an RBI single. Reggie Sharpe had an RBI. Schallmoser had a sacrifice fly.

■ Stephens was 2-for-4, including his fifth home run of the season in the ZooKeepers’ 8-7 win over Greenville. Martinez blasted a two-run homer, his first of the season, and was 2-for-4. Schallmoser went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Cameron Austin was 3-for-4. Hood had an RBI single as did Will Oates. Grossington doubled in a run. Gomez hurled two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. Yamamoto also pitched a scoreless inning.

American Legion Baseball 

■ Brady Armfield had three hits and three RBIs in Randolph County’s 11-8 loss to Rowan County. Hudson Deel smashed a two-run homer and Kyle Dillow doubled in a run. Jackson Hill had an RBI single.

■ Tate Andrews belted a solo home run in Randolph County’s 3-1 loss to Rowan County. Jake Riddle had two hits and Keaton Hill pitched five innings.

■ John Wittig had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs in Liberty’s 11-4 loss to High Point. Avery Wright had a two-run double.

■ Riddle had three hits, including a double, and three RBIs as Randolph County thumped Moore County 13-3. Deel had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs. Caleb Coggins had a triple and two RBIs. Andrews drove in a pair of runs.

■ Hayden Robbins had a single and a sacrifice fly in Liberty’s 11-1 loss to High Point.
