Logjam tightens atop PAC in boys play

Providence Grove joined a logjam at the top of the Piedmont Athletic Conference with an upset of Uwharrie Charter last week. Here’s a look at that and other key highlights from a snowy week in local sports.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

*Timothy Brower scored 20 points and collected 7 rebounds in Eastern Randolph’s 68-57 loss to Southwest Onslow in a game played in Kinston. Will Stalker had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Julian Brooks had 10 points and 8 rebounds.

 

*Tyshaun Goldston had 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists as Randleman edged R.J. Reynolds 65-63. Connor Cassidy scored 13 points and Jireh Price had 12.

 

*Eli Johnson led four players in double figures with 17 points as Asheboro walloped Montgomery Central 72-36. Osiris Rodriguez scored 16 points while Zack Blackwell and Jalial Timmons each had 10.

 

*Goldston scored 20 points as Randleman overwhelmed Wheatmore 82-39. Price had 12 points and Pacey Wagner added 10.

 

Christian Hildreth led Wheatmore with 11 points.

 

*Brayden Chapman scored 20 points in Southwestern Randolph’s 60-38 win over Trinity. Trivett Kennedy had 9 points and Julian Mosley added 8.

 

Walker Parrish and Nazir Staton each scored 11 points for Trinity.

 

*Will Dabbs poured in 30 points and grabbed 8 rebounds as Providence Grove surprised Uwharrie Charter 63-50. Andrew Thomas had 13 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Brady Collins and Jackson Rhyne both had eight points. 

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL 

*Nevaeh Staples scored 19 points and Sammy Chriscoe had 10 in Uwharrie Charter’s 44-33 victory over Providence Grove.

 

*Kenzie Martin and Macy Allred both scored 14 points in Southwestern Randolph’s 61-28 win over Trinity. Jordin George had 13 points.

 

Madison Hill led Trinity with 16 points.

 

*Bella Byman scored 21 points in Randleman’s 48-42 win over Wheatmore. Gracie Beane added 13 points for the Tigers.

 

*Beane had 18 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists in Randleman’s 49-39 win over West Forsyth. Byman had 13 points. Jacquline McDaniel had 9 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

 

BOYS WRESTLING

*Eastern Randolph went 3-2 in its Greg Hardin Duals. Asheboro was 3-1.

 

Christian Cabeza and Maddox Carson were 5-0 for Eastern Randolph while David Lambright was 4-0. Lucas Kennedy, Joshua Watson, Trever Crabtree and Jamie Crabtree were 4-1. Trevor Young and George Pemberton were 3-2.

 

Esteban Santos, Oscar Zelaya and Berik Bigelow were 4-0 for Asheboro. Omar Basyouny, Jose Martinez, Adam Curry, Gabriel Hargis, Jonah Lester and Owen Chidester were 3-1. 

 

*Trinity’s Omega Edge (2nd, 120), Edgar Vasquez (2nd, 126), Zane Schloemer (2nd, 150), Joseph Trahan (2nd, 285) and Jayden Henry (4th 138) placed in the Phillip Reed Rumble at Glenn.

 

*Southwestern Randolph went 4-1 in the Montgomery Central Duals. Randleman was 0-5.

 

Jose Flores was 5-0 for Southwestern Randolph. Michael Jaimes was 4-1 and Dominic Ross was 3-1. Nathan Garner, Dallas Rambo, Erick Rabadan Lopez and Justin Foland were 3-2.

 

Randleman’s Hezekyah Matson, Hunter Hall and Braxton Walker were 4-1. Alex Raymundo was 3-2. Jaxton Strickland was 2-2 and Jack Gilmartin won his lone match.

 

*Wheatmore was 2-1 in the Tiger Duals at Mount Pleasant. 

 

Nolan Hammonds, Spencer Moore, Dominic Hittepole and Noah Browning were 3-0 for the Warriors. Dylan Harris was 2-1 and Terry Gillespie prevailed in his lone match.

 

*Bigelow (2nd, 132), Zelaya (3rd, 126), Basyouny (3rd, 106), Samuel Salinas (4th, 138), Quanta McRae (4th, 175) and Chidester (4th, 215) placed for Asheboro in the Jet Invitational at Jordan-Matthews.

 

*Lambright (126) and Carson (285) won for Eastern Randolph at the Jet Invitational. Watson (2nd, 113), Cabeza (2nd, 215), Kennedy (3rd, 120), Jamie Crabtree (3rd, 138), Young (3rd, 144), Trever Crabtree (4th, 132) and Pembertomn (4th, 150) also placed for the Wildcats.

 

*Mitchell Freeman (157) won for Providence Grove at the Jet Invitational. The Patriots’ Jeremiah Payne (2nd, 106) and Jeremiah Duffy (2nd, 144) also placed.

 

GIRLS WRESTLING

*Trinity’s Bliss Joyce (138) and Briana Joyce (235) won at the Phillip Reed Rumble. The Bulldogs’ Layla Vasquez (2nd, 126) and Daniella Hernandez (4th, 138) also placed.

 

BOYS SOCCER                

*Four players from Asheboro’s 3-A state runner-up team were named to the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association all-state team. Cam Letterlough, Diego Bustamante, Braulio Gutierrez, and Daniel Gutierrez were among the 37 player named to the team. Letterlough scored a school-record 78 goals for the Blue Comets, the fourth highest total in state history.

Southwestern Randolph’s Fernando Hernandez and Randleman’s Owen Leonard were among the 21 players named to the 2-A all-state team.

Asheboro’s Letterlough and SWR’s Hernandez were both named to the 15-member High School OT all-state team featuring players from all four classifications. AHS’ Bustamante and SWR’s Aaron Avina were honorable mention.

 

BOYS SWIMMING

*Asheboro finished fourth in the Mid-Piedmont Conference championships. Stefan Reedy was second in the 100 free and third in the 50 free for the Blue Comets.

 

GIRLS SWIMMING 

*Asheboro placed fifth in the Mid-Piedmont Conference championships. Winning for the Blue Comets was Maci Columbia (500 meters, 100 breast).
