Mazzarone throws no-hitter, strikes out 15

Providence Grove’s Emma Mazzarone and Eastern Randolph’s Skylar Pugh had themselves a “who blnks first” showdown that ER squeaked out in the 7th inning. For the week, Mazzarone hit three homers and struck out 25 in a pair of outings. 

Those are just some of many area highlights. Let’s get to them.

*Carleigh Whitson doubled in a pair of runs and Maddie Varner had a two-run single as Southwestern Randolph held off Uwharrie Charter 4-3. Macie Crutchfield got the win, striking out eight.

Maddie Burrow had two hits, including a double, and RBI for UCA. Logan Zephir had two RBIs for the Eagles. Molly Bulla hurled a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out four.

*Wynne Bartholow doubled in the tying run in the top of the seventh inning and scored on Bailey Herring’s fielder’s choice grounder as Eastern Randolph rallied to beat Providence Grove 4-3. Skylar Pugh pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Emma Mazzarone smashed a solo home run and pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts for Providence Grove. Callie Lambert had two hits and an RBI.

*Carmen Turgeon pitched a five-inning no-hitter with 13 strikeouts in Wheatmore’s 13-0 win over Trinity.

*Maddie Flinchum collected four hits while Lauren Stout doubled and knocked in three run as Providence Grove ran away from Trinity 17-1. Katey Jo Staley had three hits and winning pitcher Ruby Caudle struck out 11.

Faith Powell doubled in a run for Trinity.

*Addie Flinchum pitched a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts in Eastern Randolph’s 2-1 win over Northern Guilford. She also had two hits. Ayanna Mears and Pugh each had an RBI single.

*Mazzarone smashed two home runs as well as a triple and pitched a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts in Providence Grove’s 12-0 win over Trinity. Devon Kelly had three hits, including a double, for the Patriots. Riley Gibson and Lambert each had two hits.

*Alyssa Harris pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts as Southwestern Randolph overwhelmed Asheboro 14-0. Ky Perdue had two triples for the Cougars. Whitson had two hits and an RBI. Lileigh Payne had a pair of doubles.

*Bulla was 3-for-4 with a home run, double and three RBIs in Uwharrie Charter’s 10-9 loss to North Stanly. Kynley Brewer and Maddie Burrow each had two hits. One of Burrow’s hits was a triple.

*Haleigh Thompson threw a three-inning no-hitter with nine strikeouts as Southwestern Randolph overwhelmed Trinity 19-0. Kami Dunn, Madelyn Smith and Harris each had a hit and RBI.

*Ziera Watson had three hits and three RBIs in Eastern Randolph’s 9-4 win over Randleman. Lanie McDaniel had two hits and two RBIs. Dori Luther had two hits and an RBI. Pugh went the distance in the circle, striking out 14.

Kadie Green had a double, triple and two RBIs for Randleman.
