The courts and mats were full of athletes again last week as high school sports ramped up following the holidays. Here are some of the first highlights from 2024:
BOYS BASKETBALL
*Jerquarius Stanback scored 25 points as Asheboro outlasted Eastern Randolph 80-75. The Appalachian State commit also surpassed 1,000 points for his career. He got plenty of help as David Rodriguez scored 25 points while Camden Walker had 15 and Elijah Woodle 12.
Timothy Brower led Eastern Randolph with 21 points. Nicah Taylor had 20 points while Tyler Gee and Raymundo West each had 8.
*Nathan Ellis scored 20 points in Southwestern Randolph’s 45-39 win over South Stanly. Marcus Robertson added 15 points for the Cougars.
*Walker poured in 29 points as Asheboro opened Mid-Piedmont Conference play with a 72-63 win over Oak Grove. Osiris Rodriguez added 16 points and Stanback had 12.
*Brower lit up the scoreboard for 29 points and Taylor had 16 in Eastern Randolph’s 80-50 thumping of Wheatmore. Julian Brooks added 9 points.
Parker Kines led Wheatmore with 13 points and Connor Gordon had 9.
*Gabe McKoy and James Ellis each scored 16 points as Providence Grove beat Chatham Charter 62-54. Brady Collins provided a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Will Dabbs had 10 points and 5 rebounds.
*Connor Cassidy scored 24 points in Randleman’s 60-57 win over Southwestern Randolph. Cassidy’s 3-pointer with 3 seconds left made for an exciting finish. Greg Price added 13 points and Tyshaun Goldston had 10.
Marcus Robertson led Southwestern Randolph with 25 points while Nathan Ellis had 10. Julian Mosley and Brayden Chapman each scored 8 points.
*Dominic Payne and Brandon Campbell showed off a one-two scoring punch in Trinity’s 85-52 rout of Uwharrie Charter. Payne led the way with 31 points and Campbell had 30. Jacob Hodges added 15 points for the Bulldogs.
Braeden Lamb led Uwharrie Charter with 14 points while Jeremiah Spinks and Aaron Smith each had 8.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
*Kenly Whitaker scored 18 points and had 9 rebounds in Eastern Randolph’s 49-38 loss to Asheboro. Ziera Watson had 11 points and 6 rebounds.
*Nevaeh Staples scored 8 points and Emory Johnson had 7 in Uwharrie Charter’s 49-21 win over Trinity.
*Audra Petty posted a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds as Randleman outlasted Southwestern Randolph 47-41. Chenleigh Robinson added 11 points while Bella Byman had 9. Kadie Green and Camden Scott each had 8 points. Green also recorded 7 steals.
Jordin George led Southwestern Randolph with 13 points and Maddie Strider had 12.
*Kynnedi Routh scored 22 points in Wheatmore’s 46-32 win over Eastern Randolph. Brianna Hill added 16 points for the Bulldogs.
Whitaker had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats. Watson had 6 points and 9 rebounds.
BOYS WRESTLING
*Aiden Burkholder, Edgar Vasquez, Spencer May, Brayden Hall, Levi Dennis, Jaden Allred, Charles Schaefer, Baron Justice, Zane Schloemer, Lawson Coltrane, Gavin Hardister and Joseph Trahan all went 2-0 as Trinity swept Cedar Ridge (64-9) and Western Alamance (72-9).
*Broodie Bates, Zack Starkweather, Braxton Shoemaker, Noah Browning, Scottie Shumate, Cayden Smith, Landon Watkins, Nolan Hammonds and Trey Swaney won in Wheatmore’s 51-25 victory over Southwestern Randolph.
Southwestern Randolph’s winners were Ty Dixon, Erick Lopez Rabadan, Jose Flores, Reece Poe and Janaskel Perez Mortera.
*Ethan Hines, Caleb Saldana, Rick Riccardella, Brandon Jordan, Jack McArthur, Aiden Foster, Lorenzo Alston, Caden Thorne, Alek Millikan, Caden Bond, Jesse Bowles, Michael Shropshire and Devonte Harrison were winners for Uwharrie Charter in its 72-6 victory over Eastern Randolph.
Trevor Crabtree won for Eastern Randolph.
*Jason Tadeo, Kolby Garner, Jesus Garcia and Braxton Walker were all 2-0 for Randleman in a tri-match with Providence Grove (54-21) and North Moore (40-39). Danny Diaz, Garrett Dycus, Connor Routh, Fareed Ray and Kobe Kinley were 1-0. Alex Raymundo, Jaxton Strickland, Jesus Gordillo-Robinson and Cotrell Davis were 1-1.
Providence Grove’s Aiden Poplin was 2-0. Logan Armfield, Ashton Davis, Jameson Summey, Wyatt Trevette, Matthew Signor and Hunter Davis were 1-1. The Patriots fell 60-21 to North Moore.
*Sammy Salinas, Oscar Zelaya, Jeffrey Harper, Adam Curry and Guillermo Santos won in Asheboro’s 39-32 loss to North Davidson.
GIRLS WRESTLING
*Trinity’s Bliss Joyce (2nd, 132) and Heather Vuong (6th, 107) placed in the Gate City Grapple.
