Payne, Trinity erupt for big win; Providence Grove still undefeated

Dominic Payne accounted for five touchdowns as Trinity romped past Jordan-Matthews 60-7 and Providence Grove stayed in the undefeated ranks with a 49-0 blanking of Asheboro. Randleman, Wheatmore and Eastern Randolph also won. Here's a look at what happened.

 

TRINITY 60, JORDAN-MATTHEWS 7

 

Payne, the Bulldogs’ junior quarterback, was 7-of-12 for 107 yards and 3 touchdowns with a pair of two-point conversions. He also ran 3 times for 40 yards and a touchdown. On top of that, Payne returned a kickoff 60 yards for a touchdown.

 

Numerous other Bulldogs shared in the fun as Trinity improved to 3-1.

 

Brandon Campbell caught a 21-yard touchdown pass and returned a fumble 28 yards for a touchdown. Adrian Goodwin carried 8 times for 44 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a two-point conversion, caught a two-point conversion pass and made 7 tackles. Brayden Jackson, Chance Grogan and Gage Griffiths each caught a touchdown pass.

 

Jaiveon Holmes and Jackson both had seven tackles. Nathan Mathai and Grogan both recovered a fumble.

 

PROVIDENCE GROVE 49, ASHEBORO 0

 

Zane Cheek ran for 210 yards and 3 touchdowns on 16 carries to spark the undefeated Patriots. Zander Cheek ran 10 times for 75 yards and a touchdown while also catching an 80-yard touchdown pass. Chase Whitaker and Karson Bowman had rushing touchdowns.

 

Logan Fox and Whitaker each made 10 tackles. Lemuel Coltrane intercepted a pass and Whitaker recovered a fumble.

 

WEST DAVIDSON 10, SOUTHWESTERN RANDOLPH 0

 

Caleb Broom threw a touchdown pass to Noah Baker and Ayden Brown kicked a 37-yard field goal as West Davidson stunned the Cougars.

 

Eli Gravely caught 10 passes for the Cougars. Southwestern Randolph fell to 2-1. 

 

EASTERN RANDOLPH 28, WILLIAMS 21

 

Devonte Brooks ran for two touchdowns and Jake Fesmire tallied one for the Wildcats. Ervodd Cassady carried 20 times for 118 yards. Quarterback Stratton Barwick threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to DJ Thomas.

 

WHEATMORE 21, CHATHAM CENTRAL 0

 

Quarterback Riley Strickland threw a pair of touchdown passes while Jonathan Kelly ran 15 times for 124 yards and a touchdown as the Warriors claimed their first win of the year. Sa’Cory Maryland and Gavin Strickland caught the touchdown passes. 

 

Ethan Roberts had two sacks and an interception. Gavin Strickland also had an interception.

 

RANDLEMAN 38, SMITH 7

 

Amarion Moton ran 21 times for 114 yards and a touchdown as the Tigers improved to 3-1. Christian Long threw touchdown passes to Tyshaun Goldston and Amari Ferdna. 

 

On defense, Ashton Dillow returned a fumble for a touchdown and Chase Farlow grabbed two interceptions.
