Playoffs end early for SW Randolph, PG, Trinity

FOOTBALL

Two teams survived and three were eliminated in the first week of high school football playoff action. Here’s a glance.

*John Kirkpatrick was 14-of-22 for 226 yards and 2 touchdowns as unbeaten Randleman swamped West Stanly 43-0 in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. Edison Hernandez ran for 134 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Tigers. Tyshaun Goldston had a huge game with 4 catches for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also had two interceptions. Gregory Price had a sack and three tackles for loss.

*Nathan Ellis returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown but that was all Southwestern Randolph could muster in a 19-6 loss to West Stokes in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. The Cougars wound up with a 6-5 record.

*Dominic Payne had a kickoff return for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass from Noah Bradley but the Bulldogs fell 44-13 to Brevard in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. Trinity finished the season with a 5-6 record.

*Logan Fox had a 5-yard touchdown run and Jacob Flinchum scored on a 16-yard run in Providence Grove’s 42-13 loss to East Surry in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. Providence Grove ended the season with a 6-5 record.

*Lucas Smith ran for three touchdowns as Eastern Randolph crushed Cherryville 68-7 in the first round of the 1-A state playoffs. Carter Revelle threw three touchdown passes and ran for another. Revelle’s touchdown passes were 16 yards to Ray West, 15 yards to Alex Nielsen and 70 yards to Nicah Taylor. Revelle also had a 10-yard touchdown run. Mason Carson added a 5-yard touchdown run.

 

SOCCER

The soccer playoffs got cooking last week and one local team was left standing as this week’s third round began. Two others were knocked out in homefield upsets. Here’s a recap and those results and more.

*Tyler Smith and Ozmar Martinez each scored a goal in No. 3 Asheboro’s 2-1 win over No. 30 Foard in the first round of the 3-A state playoffs. The goals came just over a minute apart in the first half. Gerrardo Chi and Diego Bustamante had the assists. 

*Fernando Hernandez and David Lopez got the goals as No. 12 Southwestern Randolph shut out No. 21 Lincolnton 2-0 in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. Pedro Ortiz and Jaxon Lee had the assists.

*Trinity, seeded No. 14, advanced to the second round of the 2-A state playoffs 4-3 over No. 19 West Stokes on a penalty-kick shootout after the teams played scoreless for 110 minutes.

*Randleman, seeded No. 6, suffered an upset loss to No. 27 Monroe 5-3 on penalty kicks following 110 minutes of scoreless action. The Tigers finished the season 18-7.

*Uwharrie Charter fell 6-0 to No. 6 Piedmont Community Charter in the first round of the 1-A state playoffs. The 27th-seed Eagles ended the season with a 7-10-2 record.

*Eastern Randolph fell 6-0 to No. 2 Mount Airy in the first round of the 1-A state playoffs. The Wildcats concluded their season with a 5-13-1 record.

*David Dominguez, Jonathan Lopez, Fernando Hernandez and Joe Avina all scored one goal as Southwestern Randolph upset No. 5 Shelby 4-2 in the second round of the 2-A state playoffs. Hernandez had two assists and Avina had one.

*Trinity fell 1-0 to No. 3 Salisbury in the second round of the 2-A state playoffs. The unbeaten Hornets got the game’s only goal early in the second half. The Bulldogs ended their season with a 14-6-3 record.

*Asheboro, seeded No. 3, was upset at home 1-0 by No. 14 Stuart Cramer in the second round of the 3-A state playoffs. The Comets wound up with an 18-4-2 record.

 

VOLLEYBALL

*Madelyn Smith and Gracie Hodgin each had 10 kills in Southwestern Randolph’s 23-25, 25-15, 25-14, 25-23 loss to No. 2 Brevard in the fourth round of the 2-A state playoffs. Riley Key added five kills and a block. Smith had two aces and Hodgin had one. The Cougars ended the season with a 25-5 record. Brevard went on to win the championship.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

*Uwharrie Charter had three qualifiers for the 1-A state meet. Jazmin Palma and Victoria Jennings made it for the girls and Chris White for the boys.

*Providence Grove had two qualifiers for the girls 2-A state meet — Laurel Bernhardt and Jensen Auman. Bernhardt, a freshman, was ninth overall in the regional meet.

*Wheatmore’s Zach Hazelwood placed fourth in the boys’ 2-A regional meet and qualified for the state meet.

 

GIRLS GOLF

*Providence Grove’s Morgan Heilig placed 14th in the 1-A/2-A state tournament at Stonebridge Golf Club in Monroe. The Patriot senior shot rounds of 88 and 84. Anna Holloway, a junior, was 54th. Southwestern Randolph freshman Danielle Jaeck was 59th.
