Randleman hands SWR first conference loss in soccer

While Uwharrie Charter swept through the field for the PAC volleyball tournament title, Asheboro’s leading soccer goal scorer hit 50 for the season and Southwestern Randolph suffered a rare pair of soccer losses, including its first conference defeat. Here’s a look at those and other storylines from last week.

 

VOLLEYBALL

*Caroline Way had 12 kills and 8 digs as No. 2 Uwharrie Charter swept No. 7 Wheatmore 25-13, 25-13, 25-11 in the first round of the PAC tournament. Kayden Faglier had 7 kills and 3 blocks while Anna Brewer also had 7 kills. Morgan Lowe and Nyasia Wharton both had five kills. Emory Johnson had 35 assists and 5 digs. Sadie Upchurch had 18 digs.

 

*Karrington Batten had 15 kills and 2 blocks as No. 4 Trinity beat No. 5 Providence Grove 25-9, 25-22, 25-23 in the first round of the PAC tournament. Kaitlyn McCoy had 13 kills, 9 aces and 2 blocks. Avery Moffitt had 10 kills and Charlee Phillips got 12 digs. Avalynn Johnson picked up 28 assists and Katelyn Hill had 7 digs.

 

Lara Wiseman led Providence Grove with seven kills. Riley Mazzarone had 13 assists and 2 aces. Kailey Brown had 11 assists and Mailey Way had 7 digs.

 

*Bailey Blackmon had 9 kllls and a block as No. 3 Southwestern Randolph swept No. 6 Eastern Randolph 25-15, 25-14, 25-14 in the first round of the PAC tournament. Kinlin Hulin had 5 kills and a block. Caroline Cagle had 4 kills and 3 aces. Gracie Hodgin also had 4 kills along with an ace.

 

Cora Sparrow led Eastern Randolph with seven kills. Miriana Corea and Vivian Underwood each had two kills.

 

*Camryn Vickery had 29 assists, 8 aces and 8 digs in No. 1 Randleman’s 25-14, 25-18, 25-21 sweep of No. 4 Trinity in the semifinals of the PAC tournament. Camden Scott had 9 kills and 10 digs. Mollie Hall and Ava Jones both had seven kills. Jones also had three blocks. Haley Hinshaw had 6 kills and 8 digs.

 

*Faglier had 13 kills while Wharton had 8 and Way 7 as No. 2 Uwharrie Charter swept No. 3 Southwestern Randolph 25-19, 25-17, 25-18 in the semifinals of the PAC tournament. 

 

Hodgin led Southwestern Randolph with nine kills. Paige Hughes, Matias, Cagle and Blackmon all had four kills. 

 

*Emma Kate Forester had 12 kills, 5 blocks and 2 aces as No. 2 Asheboro beat No. 3 North Davidson 25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 25-12 in the semifinals of the Mid-Piedmont Conference tournament. Lia George had 12 kills and 16 digs. Ady Scherer had 10 kills while Emma Ingold provided 18 digs and 5 aces. Anna Grace LeRoy had 21 assists and 4 kills. Eva Vuncannon had 20 assists, 5 aces and 3 kills. Emma Little had 24 digs.

 

*Way had 21 kills and Faglier added 13 as No. 2 Uwharrie Charter beat No. 1 Randleman 25-13, 25-18, 20-25, 26-24 in the PAC tournament championship final. Brewer contributed 8 kills and 2 blocks. Lowe also had eight kills. Ava Hancock had 3 aces while Johnson had 3 kills and 2 aces.

 

Scott led Randleman with 15 kills and 18 digs. Haley Hinshaw had 14 kills and 6 digs. Vickery had 45 assists and 7 digs. Kadie Green had 20 digs and 2 aces.  Natalie Roach had 12 digs and Hall had 7 kills.

 

*Forester had 12 kills and 6 blocks in No. 2 Asheboro’s 25-14, 25-15, 29-31, 25-20 loss to No. 1 Oak Grove in the MPC tournament championship match. George had 7 kills and 13 digs. Vuncannon had 14 assists and 2 aces. Little contributed 16 digs, 4 kills and 2 aces. Scherer had 5 kills and LeRoy had 17 assists.

 

SOCCER

*Cam Letterlough scored two goals to pace a balanced effort in Asheboro’s 9-2 throttling of Oak Grove. Cristian Raygadas, Juan Usanga, Henry Martinez Cruz, Juan Macias, Ozmar Martinez, Carlos Castaneda and Braulio Gutierrez all got one goal. Diego Bustamante had two assists. Daniel Gutierrez, Braulio Gutierrez, Andres Valladares, Johnathan Ortega, Raygadas and Letterlough all had one assist.

 

*Fernando Hernandez and Johnathan Lopez Degollado both scored two goals as Southwestern Randolph downed Trinity 5-2. Aaron Avina got the other goal. Omar Moreno Gorostieta, Braydon Tyl, Avina and Degollado all had one assist. Jonathan Perez Dominguez made four saves.

 

*Hernandez scored both goals in Southwestern Randolph’s 4-2 loss to Wesleyan Christian Academy, the Cougars’ first setback of the season. Gorostieta had both assists and Dominguez made eight saves.

 

*Letterlough dominated play with six goals, giving him 50 for the season, as Asheboro trounced Central Davidson 8-1. Bustamante scored the other two goals. Raygadas had three assists. Alexander Diaz, Juan Uscanga, Cruz and Castaneda all had one assist.

 

*Owen Leonard and Ivan Collazo scored the goals as Randleman surprised Southwestern Randolph 2-0. Mario Martinez and Leonard had the assists. Dilan Chavero made nine saves. The loss was Southwestern Randolph’s first in conference play.

 

*Saul Cortes scored two goals as Providence Grove beat Uwharrie Charter 4-2. Jonathan Cortes and Seth Johnson tallied the other goals. Maynor Osorto and Johnson each an assist and Eric Gonzalez made eight saves.

 

*Letterlough poured in four more goals, raising his season total to 54, in Asheboro’s 5-1 win over Piedmont. Diego Bustamante scored the other goal. Martinez was in on four assists.

 

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

*Providence Grove won the PAC championship by a single point over Randleman.

 

Randleman’s Freddie Mercado was the overall winner and the Tigers’ Jedidiah Dake was second. Rounding out the top 10 were Chris White (Uwharrie Charter), Tyler McCormick (Wheatmore), Austin Luck (Uwharrie Charter), Andrew Osmond (Southwestern Randolph), Tommy Smithers (Trinity), Caleb Ward (Providence Grove), Aiden Shelton (Providence Grove) and Colin Duvall (Providence Grove).

 

*Alex Patino finished 20th and was Asheboro’s top runner in the Mid-Piedmont Conference championship meet. The Blue Comets were fifth in the six-team conference.

 

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

 

*Wheatmore won the PAC championship and Providence Grove’s Laurel Bernhardt was the overall winner.

 

Completing the top 10 were Scarlett Hildreth (Wheatmore), Jazmin Palma (Uwharrie Charter), Lyndsay Browder (Providence Grove), Madison Hill (Trinity), Emmie Messner (Wheatmore), Callie Wood (Randleman), Kayla Franklin (Trinity), Lydia Madison (Wheatmore) and Olivia Hildreth (Wheatmore).

 

*Waverly Adams was Asheboro’s top runner, placing 24th, in the MPC championship meet. The Blue Comets didn’t have enough runners to qualify for team points.

 

GIRLS GOLF

 

*Providence Grove won the PAC championship and the Patriots’ Megan Oakley was the individual conference champion.
