Here’s a look back at how the two local conference basketball tournaments unfolded, plus some other notes from around the area.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Brayden Chapman scored 22 points as Southwestern Randolph beat Providence Grove 61-50 in the first round of the PAC tournament. Marcus Robertson had 17 points for the Cougars and Julian Mosely had 16.
Jackson Rhyne led Providence Grove with 13 points while Brady Collins had 10 and Andrew Thomas 9.
*Nicah Taylor scored 29 points as Eastern Randolph outlasted Uwharrie Charter 83-77 in the first round of the PAC tournament. Timothy Brower contributed 14 points while Tyler Gee had 11 and Will Stalker 10.
Braeden Lamb had 18 points to lead five UCA players in double figures, including Jeremiah Spinks with 16 points, Colton Bryant with 11 and Jaydon DeNamur and Zy Sturdivant with 10 each.
*Dominic Payne led the way with 27 points as Trinity trounced Wheatmore 93-45 in the first round of the PAC tournament. Brandon Campbell and Jacob Hodges each scored 18 points for the Bulldogs. Jason Earls and Evan Stepp each had 10 points.
*Tyshaun Goldston scored 27 points as Randleman swamped Southwestern Randolph 74-45 in the semifinals of the PAC tournament. Connor Cassidy added 15 points and Greg Price had 9.
Mosley led Southwestern Randolph with 11 points while Chapman and Robertson each had 10.
* Payne scored 22 points and became Trinity’s second all-time leading scorer as the Bulldogs beat Eastern Randolph 71-56 in the semifinals of the PAC tournament. Payne finished the game with 2,203 points. Josh King is No. 1 on the career list with 2,577 points. Hodges added 19 points while Grayson Earls and Campbell each had 10 points.
Brower led Eastern Randolph with 22 points, Taylor had 12 and Carterv Revelle 9.
*Jerquarius Stanback had a spectacular game with 39 points as Asheboro beat North Davidson 60-47 in the semifinals of the MPC tournament. Elijah Woodle added 11 points for the Blue Comets.
*Stanback scored 23 points and Camden Walker had 16 as Asheboro beat Central Davidson 61-46 in the MPC tournament championship game. Jalial Timmons and Woodle each had eight points.
*Goldston continued his stellar play by scoring 34 points as Randleman throttled Trinity to win the PAC tournament championship. Jirah Price added 12 points while Chase Farlow had 9.
Payne and Campbell each had 15 points to lead Trinity. Hodges added nine points.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
*Nevaeh Staples scored 20 points and Chloe Painter had 9 as Uwharrie Charter held off Wheatmore 43-40 in the first round of the PAC tournament.
*Jordin George scored 18 points in Southwestern Randolph’s 60-21 romp over Trinity in the first round of the PAC tournament. Maddie Strider added 13 points and Macy Allred had 10.
Brennan Thomas led Trinity with 9 points.
*Jada Nixon scored 19 points in Providence Grove’s 56-36 win over Eastern Randolph in the first round of the PAC tournament. Brooke Ingram scored 11 points while Mailey Way and Laurel Bernhardt each had 9.
Miranna Corea led Eastern Randolph with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Kenly Whitaker had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
*Audra Petty produced a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds in Randleman’s 47-32 win over Uwharrie Charter in the semifinals of the PAC tournament. Bella Byman had 9 points.
Staples led Uwharrie Charter with 11 points and Hannah Williams had 9.
*George scored 29 points as Southwestern Randolph held off Providence Grove 72-68 in the semifinals of the PAC tournament. Kenzie Martin contributed 21 points and Strider added 10.
Nixon led Providence Grove with 18 points. Bernhardt had 16 points and Way had 9.
*Chenleigh Robinson scored 19 points and Petty had 17 as Randleman downed Southwestern Randolph 60-47 to win the PAC tournament championship. Gracie Beane had 8 points for the Tigers.
George led Southwestern Randolph with 14 points while Allred had 9 and Strider 8.
BASEBALL
*Former Providence Grove standout Logan Thomas pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and earned the save as UNC-Greensboro upset No. 1 Wake Forest 4-3. Thomas, a sophomore, allowed no hits while striking out one and walking one.
SOFTBALL
*Former Southwestern Randolph star Heaven Maness was named South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week after batting .538 with 2 home runs and 9 RBIs for Wingate.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
*Former Asheboro and current William Peace star Tanaesha Ellison was named USA South Player of the Year. The junior guard led the conference with 24.2 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.6 steals per game. Her efforts included a game against Mary Baldwin during which she had 33 points, 24 rebounds and 11 steals. Ellison also had a school-record 43 points in a loss to Salem.
