RHS boys, SWR girls upset in playoffs

Only two local teams were left standing in the state basketball playoffs after the first two rounds ended last week: Eastern Randolph’s boys and Uwharrie Charter’s girls. No. 2 seed Randleman’s boys were upended by a No. 31 seed in the first round  and SWR’s No. 3 seeded girls were sent home by No. 19 Bandys in the second round. 

 

Meanwhile, Asheboro’s girls softball team went 1-2 on the week despite scoring 72 runs in three games. You read that right.

 

Here are highlights from those and other results as spring sports got under way with a bang.

 

Boys Basketball

- Tyshaun Goldston scored 22 points but No. 2 Randleman was upset 70-62 by No. 31 Forest Hills at RHS in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. Chase Farlow had 20 points. Forest Hills entered the game 12-14 after having lost four of its previous five games. The Tigers’ season ended at 23-2.

- Timothy Brower had 23 points and 11 assists as No. 7 Eastern Randolph rolled to an 84-63 win over No. 26 Mitchell in the first round of the 1-A state playoffs. Julian Brooks and Camden Jones each scored 14 points. William Stalker had 11 points, 8 rebounds, 7 steals, 4 assists and 2 blocked shots. 

- Osiris Rodriguez scored 18 points in No. 17 Asheboro’s 76-63 loss to No. 16 Northeast Guilford in the first round of the 3-A state playoffs. Jewel Barrett-Riggins and Jalail Timmons each had 13 points while Eli Johnson had 9.

- Will Dabbs scored 24 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in No. 27 Providence Grove’s 82-56 loss to No. 6 Lincoln Charter in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. Andrew Thomas had 11 points and 4 assists. Brady Collins had 9 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists.

- Jaxon Mabe scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds as Uwharrie Charter beat Murphy 63-46 in the first round of the 1-A state playoffs. Aaron Smith posted a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds. Jaylan Brown added 12 points while Jaydon DeNamur had 11 points and 6 steals.

- Brower had his second 30-point game in the state playoffs, scoring 31 as the Wildcats beat No. 10 South Stanly 68-59 in the second round of the 2-A playoffs. Brooks added 23 points.

 

Girls Basketball

- Jordin George scored 23 points and reached 1,000 for her career as No. 3 Southwestern Randolph whipped No. 30 West Wilkes 68-46 in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. Macy Allred scored 13 points and Maddie Strider had 12. Kenzie Martin had 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Gracie Hodgin had 7 points and 9 rebounds.

- Bella Byman scored 18 points as No. 15 Randleman ousted No. 18 and county rival Providence Grove 55-36 in the first round of the 2-A state playoffs. Jackie McDaniel had 13 points and Kadie Green added 9.

Laurel Bernhardt and Jada Nixon each had 11 points for Providence Grove. 

- Navaeh Staples scored 21 points as No. 6 Uwharrie Charter edged No. 27 Murphy 52-49 in the first round of the 1-A state playoffs. Lainey Thomas had 11 points and Kayla Brown added 9.

- Staples scored 20 points in Uwharrie Charter’s 47-37 win over No. 11 Highlands in the second round of the 1-A state playoffs. Brown had 10 points.

- Strider scored 16 points but Southwestern Randolph saw its season end with a 53-47 upset loss to No. 19 Bandys in the second round of the 2-A state playoffs. Hodgin had 11 points and 8 rebounds. 

 

Baseball

- Cameron Hill threw a five-inning shutout with four strikeouts as Trinity blanked Thomasville 10-0. Walker Parrish had two hits and two RBIs. Gage Griffiths had a hit and three stolen bases. Peyton Williams and Cohen Wolfe each had a run-scoring single. Mason Carter also had three stolen bases.

- Lucas Smith had a single, double and five RBIs in Eastern Randolph’s 17-4 drubbing of Jordan-Matthews. Carlos Cordero and Bryson Marley each had two hits. Alex Kivett had a hit and four RBIs. Chance Holdaway had a triple and two RBIs. 

- Trey Mitchell tripled and scored on Jackson Martin’s sacrifice fly in Wheatmore’s 11-1 loss to West Davidson.

- Asheboro scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break open a close game and the Blue Comets beat Southwestern Randolph 6-1. Cohen Caviness had a double and two RBIs for Asheboro. Adam Curry had a single and two RBIs. Ben Luck had two stolen bases and scored two runs. Mason Kotlowski pitched three scoreless innings for the win.

Grant Kirk, Carson Coltrane, Zack Scruggs, Jake Gainey and Landon Hardin each had a hit for Southwestern Randolph.

- Kyle Dillow smashed a two-run homer in Randleman’s 11-2 loss to Northern Guilford.

- Lukas Usterbowski had two hits and scored two runs in Wheatmore’s 6-5 loss to Central Davidson. Clay Hill had a hit, RBI and two stolen bases. Parker Kines had a hit and two RBIs. 

- Lincoln Coble threw a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts as Trinity beat West Davidson 6-2. Cameron Hill had a single, double and two RBIs. Ethan Willard had two hits and an RBI. Grayson Fauber had two hits and an RBI. Peyton Williams had one hit and two RBIs.

- Lucas Smith had a single, triple and three RBIs in Eastern Randolph’s 21-0 rout of North Rowan. Alex Kivett struck out six in three innings. Maddox Dunn pitched 1 2/3 innings.

- Braxton Walker threw a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts as Randleman beat Northwest Guilford 3-1. Tate Andrews and Jackson Hill each had an RBI single.

- Smith had two hits and an RBI as Eastern Randolph belted Anson County 15-5. Dunn had a hit and three RBIs. Chance Holdaway had a double and three RBIs. Smith struck out eight in four innings. Holdaway pitched the fifth inning, giving up a hit while striking out the side.

- Mitchell and Hill combined on a two-hitter as Wheatmore pounded Page 9-1. Mitchell went 4 1/3 innings with a pair of strikeouts. Hill went 2 2/3 innings, giving up one run, while contributing a two-run double at the plate. Kines also had a two-run double. Usterbowski had an RBI single.

- Jake Hunter was 3-for-3 with a double and RBI in Uwharrie Charter’s 13-2 loss to Southwest Guilford. Jose Ramirez had a hit and RBI.

 

Softball

- Faith Powell, Mya Hooker and Karrington Batten all had two hits in Trinity’s 22-7 loss to Salisbury. 

- Randleman’s Isabel Kirkpatrick drove in a run and Kinzie Ivey got the Tigers’ lone hit in a 4-1 loss to Northern Guilford. Kenzie Ivey went the distance in the circle, allowing seven hits and striking out seven.

- Kyndall Snipes and Shellee Culler each had a hit and three RBIs in Asheboro’s 29-21 win over Western Guilford. A’mya Mosby had three RBIs. Kayla Basulto and Mykala Cook each had a hit and two RBIs.

- Snipes and Mosby both had two hits and an RBI in Asheboro’s 19-4 loss to Grimsley.

- Powell was 3-for-3 with two doubles in Wheatmore’s 21-7 rout of Williams. Jessica Ann Honeycutt also had three hits. Batten was 2-for-3 with two doubles. Desiree Rondon was 2-for-3 with a double. Hooker was 3-for-3 with two stolen bases.

- Bella Dill had three hits, including a double and triple, and two RBIs as Wheatmore crushed Salisbury 16-2. Arielle Turgeon homered among her three hits. Maddie Nichols also homered among her three hits. Savannah Heiney had three hits and two RBIs. Emma Carter allowed two runs in five innings while also collecting two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs. Kiayla Burnette had two hits and two RBIs. Zoey Bugg had a two-run double.

- Kyndal Kindley had two hits and five RBIs in Wheatmore’s 15-3 pounding of Gray Stone Day. Heiney had a single, double and four RBIs. Dill had two hits and two RBIs. Kyliec Hemric had a two-run double and Nichols had an RBI single. Dill got the win in the circle, striking out seven in five innings.

- Haley Macon had two hits, including a triple, drew a walk, was hit by a pitch three times and had eight RBIs in Asheboro’s 43-39 loss to Western Guilford. Amya Mosby scored seven runs and Shellee Cutter crossed the plate six times. The teams combined for 38 walks. The combined runs scored was the second highest in North Carolina history. West Charlotte and Vance combined to score 91 runs in a 2010 game.

- Kaylie St. John and Ivey both had two hits and two RBIs as Randleman beat Western Alamance 12-2 in five innings. Kaylee Phillips and Teanna Bostick each had a hit and two RBIs. Ivey hurled a three-hitter with five strikeouts.

 

Soccer

- Natalie Bowman scored four goals and Jocelyn McDowell had three in Wheatmore’s 8-0 rout of East Davidson. Emmie Messner got the other goal. Alexis Hollifield, Bowman and McDowell each had an assist. Maddy Reidling made seven saves.

- Rylee Stover and Taryn Waugh both scored two goals as Providence Grove downed Ledford 4-2. Patience Keller, Alisa Shaw, Stover and Waugh had the assists. Iris Lelaya made one save.

- Jaira Arellano had a spectacular game with six goals as Asheboro zoomed to a 9-0 win over Southwestern Randolph. Gethsi Garcia, Anson Frazier and Kimrey Watts got the other goals. Gigi Flores had three assists while Merlin Valencia Melgar had two.

- Waugh scored four goals in Providence Grove’s 7-0 win over Southeast Guilford. Sarah Hendrix, Anna Winstead and Stover tallied the other goals. Keller had three assists while Shaw and Stover each had one. Marina Maravilla made one save.

- Reidling made 37 saves in Wheatmore’s 9-0 loss to Northwest Guilford. 

- Kayla Hernandez scored the goal in Southwestern Randolph’s 2-1 loss to Montgomery Central. Odalys Garcia had the assist.

 

Tennis

- Silas Jessup, Avery Plummer, Matthew Davis, Michael McNamara and Paul Ervin won in singles as Wheatmore beat Randleman 7-2. The doubles teams of Plummer/Davis and Jessup/McNamara won in doubles.

- William Slate, Joshua Prochnau and Brady Howell won singles matches in Asheboro’s 4-3 loss to North Moore.

 

Golf

- Brayden Davis took medalist honors with a 40 and Charlie Knott was second with a 43 as Asheboro beat Providence Grove and Randleman in a three-team match.

- Davis was Asheboro’s low scorer in a four-team match with Bishop McGuinness, Ragsdale and Southwestern Randolph. Asheboro was third.
