RHS makes mark with early sweeps

Randleman took the early lead in the PAC-7 volleyball race with sweeps of both Southwestern Randolph and Uwharrie Charter Academy last week. Here are details from those and other outcomes from last week..

 

Volleyball

- Emma Kate Forester controlled the net with 16 kills and 12 blocks, leading Asheboro to a 25-23, 21-25, 25-22, 25-17 win over Providence Grove. Lia George had 11 kills and 18 digs. Ady Scherer added 10 blocks and 2 aces. Anna Grace LeRoy had 28 assists and Emma Little got 20 digs.

Addie Morgan and Lara Wiseman each had 11 kills for Providence Grove. Riley Mazzarone and Kailey Brown each had 16 assists. Mailey Way had 26 digs and 3 aces.

- Camden Scott had 16 kills and 12 digs as Randleman swept Southwestern Randolph 25-22, 25-23, 25-21. Mollie Hall had 10 kills while Hailey Hinshaw had 6 kills and 13 digs. Camryn Vickery had 37 assists, Kadie Green had 24 digs and Natalie Roach had 11 digs. Ava Jones had 4 kills and Lexi Vaughn added 3.

Kinlin Hunlin had 5 kills and 2 blocks for SWR. Gracie Hodgin also had five kills. Jade Matias had four kills and a block. Paige Hughes added 2 kills and 2 blocks.

- Kaitlyn McCoy had 8 kills and 6 digs in Trinity’s 25-17, 25-19, 25-9 loss to Uwharrie Charter. Avalynn Johnson had 18 assists and Faith Powell got 12 digs.

- Cora Sparrow had 16 kills in Eastern Randolph’s 25-21, 25-22, 15-25, 15-25, 15-11 loss to Wheatmore. Kenly Whitaker had 31 assists, Vivian Underwood had 23 digs and Mirana Corea pounded 8 blocks.

- George had 11 kills and 15 digs in Asheboro’s 10-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-20 win over Southeast Guilford. Forester had 8 kills, 7 blocks and 3 aces. Scherer had 8 kills and 11 blocks while Little supplied 24 digs. LeRoy had 24 assists.

- McCoy had 14 kills in 21 attempts and had 5 aces as Trinity swept Central Davidson 25-19, 25-19, 25-22 in non-conference action. Karrington Batten was close behind with 13 kills in 18 attempts along with 4 blocks. Batten and Powell each had 10 digs. Johnson had 31 assists.

- Sparrow pounded 14 kills in Eastern Randolph’s 25-11, 25-17, 25-23 sweep of Chatham Charter. Whitaker had 25 assists and 4 aces. Vivian Underwood had 24 digs.

- Wiseman had 14 kills in Providence Grove’s 27-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18 loss to Trinity. Morgan added 9 kills while Maggie Freeman had 3 kills and 3 blocks. Brown had 19 assists and 11 digs. Mazzarone had 24 assists and Way had 20 digs.

- Scott had 15 kills and 9 digs in Randleman’s 25-16, 29-27, 25-23 sweep of Uwharrie Charter. Hinshaw contributed 17 digs, 7 kills and 2 aces. Hall had 7 kills and 3 blocks. Jones added 4 kills and 3 aces. Vickery had 32 assists and 7 digs. Green had 21 digs and 3 assists. Roach had 11 digs.

- Scherer had 10 kills and 12 blocks in Asheboro’s 25-13, 25-15, 16-25, 25-16 loss to Oak Grove. Forester had 6 kills, 8 blocks and 2 aces. Little had 22 digs while George got 15 digs and 4 kills. LeRoy had 14 assists while Eva Vuncannon had 11.

- Hodgin had 11 kills and 7 aces in Southwestern Randolph’s 25-6, 25-21, 25-16 sweep of Eastern Randolph. Cheyenne Dixon had 4 kills and 7 aces. Hunlin had 5 kills and 2 blocks.

Callie Craven, Mirianna Corea and Callie Craven all had four kills for Eastern Randolph.

 

Soccer

- Fernando Hernandez dominated with 4 goals and Aaron Avina scored twice in Southwestern Randolph’s 6-2 win over North Davidson.

- Eric Gonzalez scored two goals in Providence Grove’s 10-1 rout of North Stanly. Jackson McIlquham, Andre Raya-Cruz, Saul Cortes, Jonathan Cortes, Jefferson Vargus, Christian Bautista, Sam Peters and Roberto Arrendondo-Prieto all scored one goal. Raya-Cruz also had two assists while Samuel Cortes, Jonathan Cortes, Seth Johnston, Vargus and Peters all had one assist.

- Diego Bustamante scored his team’s goal in Asheboro’s 6-1 loss to West Forsyth.

- Cortes and Vargus each had a goal and an assist as Providence Grove blanked Morehead 4-0. Oscar Bautista and McLiquham both scored a goal.

- Cam Letterlough scored two goals in Asheboro’s 5-3 win over Mount Airy. Ozmar Martinez, Cristian Raygadas and Bustamante got the other goals. Carlos Castaneda, Bustamante and Letterlough all had an assist. 

- Gio Hernandez scored a pair of goals as Southwestern Randolph beat Gray Stone Day 6-1. Jonathan Lopez Degollado, Kevin Garcia, Avina and Fernando Hernandez all had one goal. Braydon Till, Yael Rebollar Ortiz, Gadiel Pantoja Negrete, Diego Matias-Hernandez and Omar Moreno-Gorostieta all had an assist. Jonathan Perez Dominguez made three saves.

 

Tennis

- Larson Kelly, Caroline Farlow, Lexi Owen and Ashlynn Harbor won in singles as Southwestern Randolph downed Wheatmore 6-3. The doubles teams of Kelly/Farlow and Owen/Harbor also won.

Zoey Bugg and Tatum Wagner won in singles for Wheatmore as the doubles team of Arielle Turgeon/Wagner.

- Caroline Tidwell, Alisa Shaw, Liz Shoe, Olivia Lawson, Reece Davis and Ella Money swept the singles in Providence Grove’s 8-1 victory over Randleman. The doubles teams of Callie Lambert/Carley Lambert and Layla Duggins/Money also won.

- Blair Thomas, Malaika Khan and Charlotte Smith won singles matches in Asheboro’s 5-4 loss to Central Davidson. Khan and Smith won a doubles contest.

 

Cross Country

- Trinity’s Madison Hill was second in the girls’ race of a meet with Southwestern Randolph and host Montgomery Central. The Bulldogs’ Gabby Lopez was fifth and Southwestern Randolph’s Kylie Farmer was sixth.

In the boys’ race, Southwestern Randolph’s Austin McMohon was second, Trinity’s Tommy Smithers was fourth and SWR’s Vince Ornelas was sixth.

 

College Soccer

- Appalachian State’s Ellie Garrison was named the Sun Belt Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week in women’s soccer for week 3 of the season. Garrison, who set a North Carolina high school record for goals with 230 at Wheatmore, scored both goals in the Mountaineers’ 2-0 win against Longwood on Aug. 29, the first two of her career. 

Through Sept. 8, the freshman was tied for the team lead with 7 points on two goals and three assists in a team-high 551 minutes played for the 2-3-2 Mountaineers.
