SWR captures PAC-7 volleyball crown

Southwestern Randolph, the defending 2-A state champion, captured the PAC-7 regular season volleyball title with a pair of wins last week. 

 

The Cougars ended the regular season 21-3 overall and 11-1 in the PAC-7.  

 

Meanwhile, Asheboro’s boys soccer team, ranked #1 in the West in North Carolina Division 3A, continued to steamroll through the Mid-Piedmont Conference with a week left in the regular season. 

 

Here are some details on those results and more.

 

VOLLEYBALL

 

Gracie Hodgin had 12 kills to lead a balanced effort as Southwestern Randolph beat Eastern Randolph 25-18, 25-16, 25-19. Madelyn Smith had 11 kills and 5 digs for the Cougars. Raegan LeRoy had 29 assists and 7 digs. Coley Shiflet had eight digs.

 

Nyasia Wharton led Eastern Randolph with nine kills.

 

Smith had 14 kills, 11 digs and 3 aces in Southwestern Randolph’s 25-11, 25-23, 25-16 sweep of Uwharrie Charter. Gracie Hodgin had 12 kills and 3 blocks. LeRoy had 33 assists and 8 digs while Coley Shiflet had 21 digs.

 

The defending 2-A state champion Cougars ended the regular season 21-3 overall and 11-1 in the PAC-7.

 

*Chloe Dixon pounded 22 kills and got 11 digs as Randleman, which finished one game back of SWR in conference play, fended off Trinity’s upset bid 22-25, 25-23, 16-25, 25-20, 25-10. Camden Scott and Haley Hinshaw each had nine kills for the Tigers. Kenzie Roach led with 33 assists and Camryn Vickery had 15. Gabi Carter had 6 kills, 13 digs and 4 aces. Karli Kennington had 33 digs. Hinshaw and Roach had 15 apiece. 

 

Kaitlyn McCoy had 18 kills and 3 blocks for Trinity. Sarabeth Johnson and Karrington Batten both had 14 kills. Batten also had five blocks. Natalie Franco had 5 kills and 7 blocks.

 

Dixon had another huge match with 22 kills and 16 digs as Randleman beat Starmount 25-15, 19-25, 25-11, 28-16. Carter had 9 kills, 10 digs and 2 aces. Hinshaw had 7 kills, 31 digs and a pair of aces. Roach had 33 assists and 9 digs. Kennington had 34 digs, 8 aces and 4 assists.

 

*Providence Grove finished the season with three wins during the week.

 

Emma Mazzarone pounded 14 kills and Paige Needham had 12 in Providence Grove’s 25-19, 25-19, 25-17 sweep of Asheboro. Riley Mazzarone had 34 assists for the Patriots.

 

Kaylen Nance led Asheboro with 18 assists and 3 aces. Ellen Long had 3 kills, 5 aces and 2 blocks for the Blue Comets. Piper Davidson had 7 kills and 7 digs.

 

Emma Mazzarone had 10 kills and Mailey Way had 16 digs in Providence Grove’s 25-20, 25-21, 25-14 win over Eastern Randolph. Allie Frazier had 4 kills and 12 digs. Needham had 6 kills and Dyyanna Wade had 5 blocks.

 

Emma Mazzarone had 17 kills and an ace in Providence Grove’s 25-11, 25-16, 21-25, 25-16 win over Wheatmore. Needham had 10 kills and 2 aces. Wade had 3 kills and 3 blocks.

 

Taylor Richardson led Wheatmore with 11 kills and Haley Pease had 10. Kynnedi Routh had 7 kills and 3 aces.

 

*Nance had 28 assists and 8 digs in Asheboro’s 25-13, 25-19, 26-24 loss to Ledford. Davidson had 11 kills, 10 digs and 2 aces. Long had 9 kills, an ace and a block. Sarah Hildreth had 5 kills, 4 digs and an ace.

 

*Nance had 42 assists, 5 kills and 3 aces as Asheboro outlasted Montgomery Central 18-25, 25-17, 25-14, 19-25, 15-9. Davidson had 13 kills, 18 digs and 2 aces. Lia George had 9 kills, 16 digs and an ace. Long had 9 kills, 5 blocks and 2 aces. Sara Hildreth had 8 kills and 3 aces.

 

*Dacia Lowery had 7 kills and 4 blocks in Uwharrie Charter’s 29-27, 25-13, 25-20 win over Wheatmore. Chloe Painter had 7 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces. Lizah Moore had 6 kills and 2 blocks.

 

*Addie Flinchum had 15 kills and 15 digs as Eastern Randolph swept Trinity 25-18, 25-23, 25-18. Logann Beaver had 6 kills and 7 blocks while Nyasia Wharton had 7 kills. Kenly Whitaker had 33 assists, 13 digs and 5 aces. Quachell Headen had 6 blocks and 2 aces, Ziera Watson had 5 blocks and Bailey Herring had 36 digs.

 

SOCCER

 

*Cristian Ortiz and Edwin Perez each got a hat trick in Asheboro’s 8-1 thumping of Montgomery Central. Daniel Gutierrez had three assists.

 

*Anakin Leister scored two goals and had an assist in Wheatmore’s 4-0 win over Randleman. Nick Galloway made seven saves.

 

*Diego Torres scored the lone goal in Trinity’s 1-0 win over Southwestern Randolph.

 

*Ortiz scored his second hat trick of the week in Asheboro’s 3-0 win over Oak Grove. Edwin Perez had two assists.

 

*Fernando Hernandez scored the only goal in Southwestern Randolph’s 1-0 overtime win over Randleman.

 

GIRLS GOLF

 

*Asheboro’s Salem Lee shot a 73 at the Holly Ridge Golf Links to win the Mid-Piedmont Conference championship. She was named MPC player of the year and the Blue Comets finished second as a team.

 

The Blue Comets advanced to the 3-A Central Regional tournament.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

 

*Wheatmore’s Zach Hazelwood and Uwharrie Charter’s Abbie Gudino were the individual winners in a PAC-7 meet at Wheatmore.

 

*Randleman’s Cooper Scott and Eastern Randolph’s Cordylia Randall were the individual winners in a PAC-7 meet at Randleman.
