The Southwestern Randolph girls remained unbeaten in basketball and local swimmers made their mark in postseason swim meets. Here’s a look at some highlights from last week’s local sports scene.
Boys Basketball
Osiris Rodriguez scored 21 points in Asheboro’s 66-54 win over North Davidson. Jalial Timmons had 12 points and Eli Johnson added 9.
- Will Dabbs scored 26 points as Providence Grove overpowered Trinity 75-33. Andrew Thomas had 11 points and Stephen Beeson contributed 8.
Zy Holmes had 13 points and 5 rebounds for Trinity.
- Tyshaun Goldston scored 23 points, Chase Farlow had 18 and Connor Cassidy had 12 in Randleman’s 77-66 win over Uwharrie Charter. Pacey Wagner added 10 points.
Jaylan Brown led UCA with 18 points. Braeden Lamb scored 16 points and 9 rebounds. Jaxon Mabe had 14 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Aaron Smith had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
- Thomas scored 24 points in Providence Grove’s 61-59 overtime win over Southern Alamance. Dabbs had 17 points and 6 rebounds. Jackson Rhyne had 8 points and 6 rebounds.
- Cassidy led the way with 22 points as Randleman beat Providence Grove 79-61. Farlow had 20 points and Goldston added 9.
Dabbs and Thomas each had 25 points for Providence Grove.
- Parker Kines scored 20 points and had 5 assists in Wheatmore’s 56-34 win over Southwestern Randolph. Weston Driggers had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks. Caleb Coggins had 8 points and 5 rebounds.
Trivett Kennedy led Southwestern Randolph with 10 points while Brayden Chapman and Julian Mosley each had 8.
Girls Basketball
Maddie Strider scored 13 points as Southwestern Randolph beat Eastern Randolph 66-26. Kenzie Martin had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Macy Allred and Ryleigh Hineline each scored 10 points.
- Navaeh Staples scored 16 points as Uwharrie Charter downed Randleman 48-41. Abbie Gudino added nine points.
Bella Byman led Randleman with 12 points and Gracie Beane had 10.
- Laurel Bernhardt scored 28 points as Providence Grove overcame Randleman 46-37. Alyson Maze had 9 points and Jada Nixon added 8.
Jackie McDaniel led Randleman with 16 points and Byman had 10.
- Strider scored 11 points as undefeated Southwestern Randolph held on for a 44-39 win over Wheatmore. Jordin George had 10 points and Martin had 8.
Katelyn Whiteheart led Wheatmore with 13 points and Kynnedi Routh had 8.
- Nevaeh Staples and Naimah Al-Arif each scored eight points in Uwharrie Charter’s 49-23 win over Eastern Randolph.
- Laneane Scherer scored eight points in Asheboro’s 51-26 loss to Ledford.
Boys Swimming
Asheboro finished 11th in the 3-A Central Region meet at Greensboro Aquatic Center. One Blue Comet qualified for the state meet: Stefan Reedy (3rd 50 free; 4th 100 free). Reedy placed 13th in the 50 free.
- Wheatmore tied for 18th in the 1-A/2-A Central Region meet at Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Randolph County qualifiers for the state meet were Reid Herring (Randleman, 7th, 50 free; 8th, 100 free) and Colten Osborne (Wheatmore, 5th, 100 butterfly).
Girls Swimming
Uwharrie Charter was 22nd and Wheatmore placed 27th in the 1-A/2-A state championship meet in Cary.
Megan Becker of Uwharrie Charter was second in the 50 free and 100 free.
Randleman’s Kendall Fortson was sixth in the 100 butterfly.
- Asheboro was 13th in the 3-A Central Region meet at Greensboro Aquatic Center. Qualifying for the state meet from the Blue Comets was Maci Columbia (7th, 100 back, 5th, 100 breast).
- Wheatmore was sixth in the 1-A/2-A Central Region meet at Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Qualifying for the 1-A/2-A state meet from Randolph County were Kendall Fortson (Randleman, 4th, 50 free; 2nd, 100 butterfly), Sydney Hall (Wheatmore, 3rd, 100 butterfly; 7th, 500 free), Jillian Wolfe (Wheatmore, 4th, 100 free; 7th, 100 back), the 200 free relay (Wheatmore, 4th, Wolfe, Sophie Williamson, Paislee Hollifield, Hall), and Hollifield (7th, 100 back).
Boys Indoor Track
Randleman’s Chase Farlow won the high jump (6-8) in the Mondo Elite Invitational at JDL Fast Track.
- Asheboro’s Aaron Tyson won the pole vault in the Last Chance Meet at Pinecrest.
Girls Indoor Track
Asheboro’s Jalaya Showers won the 55-meter dash in the Last Chance Meet at Pinecrest.
College news
Former Asheboro star Diamond McDowell had 23 points and 22 rebounds for Anderson University in a 70-61 win over Limestone. McDowell is the first player at Anderson to get 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She also became the program’s career leader in rebounds.
McDowell is averaging 16.4 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.
