Conference volleyball tournaments dominated the week, and by Saturday the opening round of playoffs were under way. Postseason was also in play in tennis and cross country. Here’s a look at some highlights from last week.
Volleyball
■ Marianna Corea had 11 kills, 9 aces and 2 blocks as No. 3 Eastern Randolph beat No. 6 Jordan-Matthews 3-1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-16, 25-11) in the semifinals of the Four Rivers Conference tournament. Roxanne Davis had 8 kills and Reagan Beaver had 6 along with an ace. Gracie McNeil also had six kills and an ace. Callie Craven had six aces and a kill. Shelby Williams had four aces.
■ Mya Hooker had 15 kills and 3 blocks as No. 2 Trinity swept Providence Grove 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-22) in the semifinals of the Central Carolina Conference tournament. Avery Moffitt had 11 kills, a block and an ace. Avalynn Johnson had 38 assists and 13 digs. Charlee Phillips had 17 digs.
■ Lia George had 12 kills and 12 digs but No. 3 Asheboro fell 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20) to No. 2 Southeast Guilford in the semifinals of the TAAC tournament. Adalynn Scherer had 9 kills while Emma Kate Forester had 6 kills and 2 blocks. Emma Ingold had 15 digs and 2 aces. Emma Little had 14 digs and Kailey Brown had 17 assists along with 3 aces. Eva Vuncannon had 15 assists and 2 aces.
■ Bailey Blackmon pounded 16 kills as No. 2 Southwestern Randolph swept No. 3 Eastern Randolph 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-16) in the semifinals of the Four Rivers Conference tournament. Kinlin Hulin had 8 kills and 3 blocks. Stella Brown had 8 kills, 13 digs and 4 aces. Sara-Kate Marion had eight kills. Kennedie Welborn had 6 kills while Madilyn Baker had 16 digs and 3 aces. Hailey Kennedy had 30 assists, 8 digs and 3 aces.
Corea and Davis both had six kills for Eastern Randolph. Beaver had 4 kills and 2 aces.
■ Carly Rush had 10 kills and 2 aces as No. 1 Uwharrie Charter swept No. 5 Northwood 3-0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-14) in the semifinals of the Four Rivers Conference tournament. Caroline Way had 8 kills and 2 aces. Aly Dalton had four aces.
■ Hooker had 11 kills and 3 blocks in No. 2 Trinity’s 3-1 (25-13, 16-25, 25-21, 25-20) loss to No. 1 West Davidson in the CCC tournament championship match. Moffitt had 10 kills and an ace. Cox had 8 kills and 3 blocks. Katelyn Hill had 12 digs, 3 aces and a block. Avalynn Johnson had 29 assists and Phillips got 10 digs.
■ Way dominated with 17 kills, 11 digs and 3 aces as No. 1 Uwharrie Charter swept No. 2 Southwestern Randolph 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-19) in the Four Rivers Conference tournament championship match. Rush had 16 kills, 12 digs and an ace. Emory Johnson had 30 assists, 4 kills and 2 aces. Sadie Upchurch had 23 digs and Nyasia Wharton had 7 kills.
Hulin had 8 kills and 3 blocks for Southwestern Randolph. Mary Catherine Coltrane provided 10 assists. Baker had 13 digs and an assist. Marion had 10 digs while Blackmon had 3 blocks and 2 kills. Welborn had three blocks.
Soccer
■ Seth Johnson scored four goals and dished three assists as Providence Grove whipped West Davidson 8-1. Justin Morales added two goals while Brayan Castillo and Kevin Bautista each had one. Oscar Bautista and Matthew Signor each had one assist. Aldo Rubio made 11 saves.
■ Carter Queen scored the goal in Wheatmore’s 4-1 loss to Thomasville. Logan Hughes made 17 saves.
■ Ozmar Martinez had two goals in Asheboro’s 4-3 loss to Northern Guilford. Alexander Diaz got the other goal and Martinez had an assist.
■ Owen Leonard led the way with four goals in Randleman’s 7-1 romp over T.W. Andrews. His big game have him 30 goals, a single-season scoring record for the Tigers. Leonard set a new career scoring mark of 78, tops in Randleman history.
■ Laurel Ortiz Saurez scored both goals in Wheatmore’s 2-1 win over East Davidson. Owen Bailey had an assist and Hughes made 19 saves.
■ Martinez scored a pair of goals in Asheboro’s 6-2 win over Southeast Guilford. Henry Martinez Cruz, Anrahan Cabrall, Carlos Gonzalez and Diaz all had one goal. Gonzalez and Martinez both had assists. Erik Gervacio and Martinez Cruz both had one assist.
Girls Golf
■ Danielle Jaeck was the medalist with a 94 and led Southwestern Randolph to victory in the Four Rivers Conference championship at Siler City Country Club.
n Megan Oakley got medalist honors with a 42 as Providence Grove beat Asheboro at Holly Ridge.
Girls Cross Country
■ Providence Grove’s Laurel Bernhardt was the overall winner in the Central Carolina Conference championship at East Davidson. Wheatmore’s Scarlett Hildreth was second.
East Davidson won the team title, followed by West Davidson, Providence Grove and Trinity.
■ Uwharrie Charter’s Jackson Re was sixth in the Four Rivers Conference championship meet at North Moore. Gracilyn Elliott was seventh for the Eagles, who finished second to Northwood.
■ Randleman’s Reagan Henley was ninth overall in the Piedmont Athletic Conference championship meet at Denton Farm Park.
Boys Cross Country
■ Ayden Fitzgerald of Wheatmore won the individual title and the Warriors finished second to East Davidson by one point in the CCC championship. The Warriors’ Tyler McCormick was sixth and Ryan Mabe was seventh.
West Davidson was third and Providence Grove came in fourth.
■ Southwestern Randolph’s Andrew Ormond was fifth in the Four Rivers Conference championship meet dominated by Northwood.
■ Randleman’s Jedidiah Dake placed fifth in the PAC championship meet at Denton Farm Park.
Tennis
■ Jacey Wilson, Kayla Neam, Selina Arroyo, Melanie Wilson, Makensie Case and Caroline Case won as No. 2 Trinity blanked Wallace-Rose Hill 6-0 in the first round of the 3-A dual team state playoffs.
