ASHEBORO — Once a month, hiking enthusiast Jim Rich takes groups on a hike to various places in Randolph County or in the Uwharrie Forest, which extends into Montgomery County.
The hikes are free and open to the public. Children and dogs who can make the trek are welcome.
Hikes take place on Sundays at 2 p.m. Participants can meet at the hike site or meet at 1:30 p.m. at the Downtown Farmers Market parking area on Church Street in Asheboro and car pool to the site.
Here is the list for 2022:
JAN. 9 – Hike from Mundo Vista at Camp Caraway to Slip Rock Mountain.
FEB. 13 – Hike to Walker’s Creek from Walker’s Creek Trailhead.
MARCH 13 – Hike at Mt. Shepherd along the Perimeter Trail.
APRIL 10 (Earth Day) – Hike at NC Zoo on Purgatory and Moonshine Run Trails.
MAY 15 – Hike to Russell Gold Mine, Uwharrie National Forest.
JUNE 12 (National Trail Day) — Hike on the Deep River/Franklinville Rail Trail and Faith Rock.
JULY 17 – Hike at Zimmerman Vineyard.
AUG. 14 – Hike to Cooper Mountain Cemetery from Robbins Branch Trailhead.
SEPT. 11 – Hike to Cooler’s Knob, highest point in the Birkhead Wilderness and Colonel Balfour Grave Site, from Tot Hill Farm Trailhead.
OCTOBER — Mayor’s Fitness Challenge Events: A walk every Saturday and a hike every Sunday.
NOVEMBER — Mayor’s Fitness Challenge Events: Walks on Nov 5 and 12 and a hike on Nov. 6.
DECEMBER — No hikes planned.
