ASHEBORO, N.C. (ACME NEWS) — The North Carolina Zoo is mourning the loss of Leia, a beloved 15-year-old giraffe who passed away on Tuesday, just one day after the death of longtime Zoo Director and CEO Pat Simmons.
Leia had been part of the Zoo family since 2010 and was undergoing a planned medical procedure to treat a foot injury. Veterinary staff expected a full recovery, but Leia experienced acute aspiration following the procedure—a known risk associated with anesthesia, especially in giraffes. A necropsy confirmed aspiration as the official cause of death.
“This is a heartbreaking loss,” said Deputy Director Diane Villa. “Leia’s passing, so soon after Pat Simmons, has left our Zoo community reeling. We’re incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support and kind words from our community—it truly helps as we begin the journey toward healing.”
Dr. JB Minter, the Zoo’s Director of Animal Health, echoed the sentiment in a statement posted on social media, calling it “a very difficult week” for the staff.
Leia was known for her curiosity and independence, often the first to explore new enrichment tools and puzzle feeders. Kelly, one of Leia’s longtime keepers, shared memories of the giraffe’s unique spirit:
“Over the years we developed an extremely strong relationship to where for a while she wouldn’t trust any stranger unless I was there to give the ok. Her personality blossomed over the years, showing her true intelligence and awareness... Leia was a true ‘once in a lifetime’ animal.”
Grief counselors have been brought on site to help Zoo staff cope with the dual loss of a cherished animal and a visionary leader. The Zoo is requesting privacy and compassion for the staff and caregivers who formed close bonds with Leia over the years.
